View Full Version : Help with Living Wish SB

So, I'm building a Junk combo deck with Academy Rector and living wish. I've got 4 open spots in the SB (all other spots are definitely set) and 8 cards I would like to play. Looking for some advice on which 4 of these 8 I should use...
1. Kitchen Finks - I have 2 in the board already and could cut the third for something else. But in testing I've been having a hard time with Goblins and Finks have been good.
2. Gaddock Teeg- obviously good against certain combo and Miracles
3. Linvala - good against other combo (eg. elves) but seems a little slow
4. Scavenging Ooze - graveyard hate (I do have 3 Deathrite Shaman in the main and 1 Bojuka Bog already in the SB)
5. Harmonic Sliver (could be Qasali Pridemage, just like having the body stick around)
6. Kataki, War's Wage - dedicated hate against Affinity and eggs
7/8. Fleshbag Marauder or Nekrataal (or something else?) - spot creature removal. I am playing Abrupt decay and Pernicious Deed in main. So leaning towards Fleshbag.
Right now I'm thinking I will cut Linvala, Kataki (don't see a lot of affinity), Nekrataal, and one other thing.
My current set cards are:
1. Academy Rector (4th)
2. Elesh Norn (guess I could consider cutting this also, but so good against creature based decks)
3. Emrakul
4. 3 x thoughtseize (against combo)
5. 2 x Kitchen Finks (unless someone has a better answer for Goblins and Stompy)
6. High Market (need a sac outlet)
7. Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
8. Bojuka Bog
Anyway, thanks for any advice.

Have you considered Rector-Fit in the Nic Fit thread in Established Decks? Seems right for what you're trying to do with the deck based on your description.
Anyhow for your wishboard, you absolutely do not dedicate every slot as a wishboard slot. In fact I recommend about 6-9 slots for different nonland noncreatures.
Now for staples!
1 Angel of Despair (OmniTell)
1 Karakas (Reanimator using Iona: I'd imagine anything else they could throw out would get StP'd real quick)
1 Fleshbag Marauder (Progenitus)
And more options!
1 Phyrexian Revoker (CounterTop and Planeswalkers)
1 Grave hate (Includes, but not limited to, Bojuka Bog, Scavenging Ooze, and Deathrite Shaman)
Actually, if you don't mind me asking . . . what are your matchups like so far? And more important than that ... do you run Green Sun's Zenith?

I'd agree on Fleshbag for a sac outlet for your Rectors, and suggest Shriekmaw for your spot removal slot (and deals with Emrakul) and Tidehollow Sculler (could go in the 3rd Thoughtseize slot).

Funny you should mention that. I started with the Nic Fit shell but didn't like it as much. Felt too dedicated to the graveyard and I didn't like the mana base. However, I didn't see any other lists out there so I just tried to stick my idea in a classic nic-fit build. I couldn't find the rector-fit thread in the nic-fit forum but I didn't sift through all 150 pages either. So far my control matches have been fantastic (ie. miracles, etc). Dredge has been pretty good as long as they don't have a psycho draw. Same thing goes for belchere (can't beat turn 1 without having leylines in my SB, but they took up too much space). Goblins have been tough unless I can get out the rector before dying. The mana denial plus super aggro approach is tough. finks have helped quite a bit. As for your recommendations, I do have karakas in the main (with KotR) but couldn't find a slot in the SB. Angel of Despair is a good thought as well, although it would be hard to drop it on my own so unless I go off and then I'm just dropping an Emrakul off Omniscience. I kind of forgot about Shriekmaw and might find a spot for it, but right now fleshbag is definitely going in, as it has the interaction I need with rector also.
Revoker is also pretty good (again, didn't really consider it) but my space is really filling up. I am not playing GSZenith any more as it rarely grabbed anything I really needed from the deck; thus the switch to living wish. Origiinally had Eladamri's Call but realized I could open up spots in the deck (eg. Emrakul spot) by switching to living wish instead. So, given the limitations of the 15 slot SB and knowing the cards I already need to have in the SB, what do you think the actual 15 should look like? Again, I appreciate the feedback. I'll post the full list once I settle on something.

Karakas is sweet as a target.
Furthermore, if you need grave hate, you'll need it QUICKLY or you just lose. Remember that the decks you need that stuff against are very quick decks (Rean, Dredge). Faerie Macabre is a nice card in that case. I'd side one of those.
Fleshbag Marauder can also help you kill your own Rector or Explorer. That's a third I'd use.

Again, I don't really want to build it in a nic-fit shell (eg. Vet Explorers, although I do like the interaction with diabolic intent). Here's the list as it stands...
// Lands
2 [B] Savannah
4 [ON] Windswept Heath
1 [LG] Karakas
4 [ZEN] Verdant Catacombs
1 [UNH] Plains
1 [UNH] Forest
2 [U] Bayou
1 [B] Scrubland
3 [AVR] Cavern of Souls
1 [US] Gaea's Cradle
1 [US] Phyrexian Tower
1 [UNH] Swamp
// Creatures
4 [CFX] Knight of the Reliquary
4 [RTR] Deathrite Shaman
3 [AVR] Griselbrand
3 [UL] Mother of Runes
3 [DKA] Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
3 [UD] Academy Rector
// Spells
3 [RTR] Abrupt Decay
2 [CHK] Sensei's Divining Top
4 [JU] Cabal Therapy
2 [M13] Omniscience
1 [4E] Sylvan Library
4 [JGC] Living Wish
1 [AP] Pernicious Deed
1 [RAV] Faith's Fetters
// Sideboard
SB: 1 [WWK] Bojuka Bog
SB: 1 [UD] Academy Rector
SB: 1 [LRW] Gaddock Teeg
SB: 1 [CMD] Scavenging Ooze
SB: 1 [LG] The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
SB: 1 [NPH] Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
SB: 1 [MM] High Market
SB: 1 [ROE] Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
SB: 1 [MBS] Phyrexian Revoker
SB: 1 [ROE] Linvala, Keeper of Silence
SB: 1 [SOK] Kataki, War's Wage
SB: 3 [SHM] Kitchen Finks
SB: 3 [LRW] Thoughtseize
SB: 1 [LRW] Shriekmaw
SB: 1 [ARB] Qasali Pridemage
SB: 1 [PLC] Necrotic Sliver
SB: 1 [CMD] Fleshbag Marauder
The main deck is pretty solid; don't see changing a whole lot there (although going back and forth between cutting the 4th Deathrite Shaman for a 2nd Pernicious Deed). I did like Faith's Fetters in the above list so I replaced the second sylvan library for one of those. Otherwise, it's built more as a Junk deck with rector combo in it. This way it can function independantly as either. Deathrite has been an all-star in testing against any graveyard based deck so right now I'm sticking with the 4th of those. Not sure I'm in love with Mother of Runes and could see switching her out for something else with a little bit more power. Unfortunately I don't own Tarmogoyfs so was either thinking Qasali Pridemage or Mirran Crusader, as it's human.
As you can see, the SB has way too many cards in it. Kitchen Finks could become removal like StPlow but I kinda like them. They could move up to replace the moms as well. Not sure which Wish targets to cut though. That's where I need the most advice. Thanks again.

faerie macabre is a wonderful wish target as it's instant speed free graveyard removal

yeah, but living wish is sorcery speed, so I figured the bojuka bog in the SB works even better than macabre. It also serves as a a black mana source, which can be helpful.

Interesting list, don't you ever get screwed over because your list is trying to do alot of things? (Thalia, Knights, Shamans, Rector)

Not yet. Like I said, this list plays like a junk/Maverick list but just goes "oops, I win" with a rector draw and sac. If you don't have something to drop (eg. Griselbrand) with omniscience, just go get a library or deed or fetters. Living wish can also obviously be used for more than to go for the combo. Just get a silver bullet. I've also been surprised by how often I can just drop griselbrand (with the Gaea's Cradle). I've had good matchups against most decks. Has some issue with a fast goblins draw and haven't tested a lot against pure combo like TEPS.
I was thinking about switching out one Omniscience for a Day of the Dragons, but that seemed a little too cute. Wish there was another expensive "you win the game" enchantment out there that wasn't blue.

If you are looking for a cheap, creature-based sacrifice outlet you may wish (heh) to consider Kjeldoran Dead over Fleshbag Marauder.
