View Full Version : Foils + Cat Piss = ?????

I've already determined that cat urine is flammable if an electric current is run through it. Unfortunately, I now have a situation involving both cat urine AND a portion of my Magic collection. :frown:

A few of my binders on the bottom shelf of a bookcase in my study got sprayed by one of my cats, who has recently taken up the hobby of marking to antagonize one of his peers. It must have happened sometime in the last week, and we didn't smell it because he had also recently sprayed another area nearby. I only noticed this evening as I was going through binders to pull out a few cards for a friend's recently built cube. At first I was utterly horrified, though closer inspection revealed that I got really lucky. About 4-5 binders total were exposed, three on the second shelf and two on the bottom. The upper binders were only hit on the outside and there was no damage to any cards in them (phew! One of them had cards from Arabian Nights through Legends).

However, the urine got on the tops of the two binders on the bottom and some cards were hit. One contained Invasion block, which looked to mostly be hit on the outside of the binder, though there seems to be some minimal splash damage that is limited to the top row of cards on just a few pages. My binder of pre-Mirrodin Foils took the brunt of the assault. None of the cards were in sleeves and every page was exposed. I just got finished pulling out all the cards to survey the carnage. Everything in the bottom rows was okay, and most of the stuff in the middle rows survived. The top rows suffered heavy casualties.

Fortunately, the bulk of the cards were chaff, so the losses aren't too excessive. The most expensive card was a Foil Palinchron, which somehow came out unscathed as far as I can tell, as did a handful of cheap but sentimental cards (Raven Familiar, Bouncing Beebles, etc.). The affected foil cards include Undermine (which is the worst hit overall), Holistic Wisdom, Ghastly Demise, Wing Shards, Seal of Cleansing, Arrogant Wurm, Snap, Riftstone Portal, Korlash of Blackblade, a few basic lands, and some other EDH playables. In general, nothing too expensive or rare was damaged since most of the worthwhile foils I own were not in the binder (good thing I maintain a foiled out EDH deck for my wife to house/protect the good stuff and I'm too lazy to have found time to transfer the more recent foils into the binder).

Before anyone says anything about having the cards on the bottom shelves, it's worth noting that they have been there with the same set of felines in the house for YEARS without incident. Also, pretty much all the Legacy/Vintage playables (i.e. anything rare/expensive) are housed elsewhere under much safer conditions. Since I'm not a fan of foil cards, I was very relieved that it was the only binder to take a critical hit. But it still sucks to see something like this happen to any Magic cards (that aren't both complete crap AND ugly).

Just wanted to share my suffering and ask if anyone has suggestions for trying to save the handful of affected cards I might actually want to play with at some point. I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time to bother or if I should just write off the losses.

Sounds like your cat has a massive bladder. From what I've read, doesn't sound like much, price wise, was damaged. Count your stars, kill the cats, put binders where cats can't urinate ;)

Cat piss, from my experience, doesn't really leave whatever it is that got hit without chemical assistance, which you wouldn't want to do. I would say, as unfortunate as it is (even more so for me, I love foils!), it's probably just best to write them off as damaged beyond hope.

I disagree. I don't believe that the cards are necessarily "damaged beyond hope" if you sleeve them up. You could make a competitive deck with the "cat piss" cards. Just make sure that all the cards in that deck have been sprayed by the cat. If you have a mix of "cat piss" and "non-cat piss" cards that is distinguishable by the sense of smell, you could be called out for having a marked deck. Well, the deck is "marked," marked by the cat anyways, but you get what I mean. If you wish to add new cards to your "cat piss" deck, you could leave them in your cat's litter box.

Foils + cat piss = two reasons to toss the cards

Try putting them into a box of baking soda for a few months (for reals, I'm curious it would work)

I would get rid of that cat!

Towel dry them, then place them in a box with rice/scilica, etc and leave it in a closet or somewhere else where the smell wont be too bad.

Failing that list them on eBay stating that they are cat piss damaged, I would bet someone will still buy them!

Value = 15% of SCG

edit: That would be to a cat lover.

Ok, if cat urine is flammable when a current runs through it and foils are great at conducting electricity I think what you need to do is takes the cats AND the cards, put them in an industrial microwave for oh... 2-3 minutes, and see what happens.

A lot of pet stores sell various chemicals that have enzymes that break down the cat urine (the Nature's Miracle brand stuff has traditionally worked well for me). Maybe try and see if you can lightly swab some of the less damaged cards and see if it helps?

If the card has already absorbed the urine and is warped from it there's not much you can do though.

Ebay them as Near Mint. I have gotten "Near Mint" from Ebay with worse damage.

Ebay them as Near Mint. I have gotten "Near Mint" from Ebay with worse damage.

I bought a lot of about 50 cards in a Revised starter box. The cards arrived in a zip lock bag. Opening the bag there was a smell. I couldn't place it. Air freshener covering up something bad.

Handling the cards to rifle through them was enough to make my face itch like burning.

The cards went back in the bag. Then they went into the trash.

I'm quite allergic to cats, so I assume it was a cat related smell.

Or those cards were cursed.

I know the feeling, a few years ago a cat threw up on my aggro loam deck. If they're warped from liquid (like puke liquid) there's not much you can do to make them as good as they were before. Mine are still playable with sleeves but look like shit. That is the day I learned my "never leave cards for a deck laid out on a floor/table for extended periods of time.

I would try the enzyme spray that breaks down cat piss (some of it smells like oranges!) and swab some of them, then put them in an air tight box with desiccant. I have no experience with it, but that's probably the most likely solution.

I had something similar happen to me years ago, I told my local dealer at the time and he still brings it up when I pop in despite it being over a decade since. This is the type of thing that adds providence to the game and you as a player. Be happy it wasn't anything valuable and know you will look back on the story fondly.

Lol something like it happened to me as well.

My Spiritmongers (when they were t2 mind you!) were at my friends and I was only one within 30km to have them.
They got peed all over. Wiped em, sleeved em, stuffed em under everyone noses. Was fun, I was actually smashing
their faces with them while smashing their decks with them.

But feel bad for you. :D

Also, do try to find a buyer. Even if you have to make up some fake marketing (like it was "scented by a Kopi Luwak" or something). I sold my mox that went through the wash for a poutine, well worth it.

Thanks for the ideas and stories! After letting things settle and surveying the situation again this morning, I think this is already just a funny story and no big deal (except now I have some foils soaked in feline urine that need to be used for amusing things). I haven't really even touched any of those cards in quite a while, and the monetary loss is trivial. The only "significant" card that really got noticeably damaged was the Undermine, but it can probably be salvaged for more laughs that it's former value anyway. As for what to do next, Electricity+Foil+Cat piss seems entertaining, so once I figure out the details some cards will be sacrificed that way. Others I may hand out to innocent bystanders the next time I go to an event.

Foils + Cat piss = LOLs.

This is why I'm not a cat fan.

Just get a pitbull, it'll eat the cat so no one knows what happend, at least until it shits it out, but still. That'll teach them to spray random.
