View Full Version : Fords, NJ - Timezone Gaming Legacy 1st and 3rd Saturday of the Month
WorstBandNameEver
12-24-2012, 07:49 PM
Timezone Gaming will start hosting legacy events twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. The events will be in the afternoon and start at 2 pm. That will most likely run 3-4 rounds and most if not all the money goes to the prize pool and the money can be used on singles. They have older singles and not just standard stuff.
This area of New Jersey does not really have a great representation for legacy or even modern yet. It would be great to get something happening regularly.
430 New Brunswick Avenue Fords, NJ 08863
(732) 738-5111
Feel free to shoot me a message for more information.
Please note, I don't run these events. I'm just advocating for them as I want them to be a success so I can play legacy more regularly.

I'll try and make it but I'll be at GP Denver the 1st Sunday and likely skiing on the 3rd week of January. Will have to see. I do make it to Time Zone for Friday Night magic on occasion, next time I'll bring a Legacy deck.

I'm not sure how many of their FNM people will be doing legacy. I think there is some overlap but not too many. I've only went there for modern previously.
Hope to see you there at some point.

Thank you for taking the time to make this thread bro.
All of the entry will go into the prize pool. Also the store credit you win can be used for anything not just singles. We have sealed product, singles, supplies, video games and board games. All of those will be available to use the store credit on

There actually are quite a few legacy players in Somerset and Middlesex counties. Unfortunately we can't make it to events on Saturdays as we travel to larger events every weekend. This is why TOGIT moved their legacy from Saturday to Friday. If at some point you change your weekly legacy events to sometime during the week I'll do what I can to support it.

The person who runs the events checks this thread I think. Maybe he will consider it. I'm just promoting it to others as I hope people show up.
Good luck in you playing this weekend.

We are about 1.5 hours on the parkway I think.
As for attendance , it is still small as it's the only second time running it. We had 10 last Saturday. Hopefully it continues to grow. It will take time.

We had 8 this past weekend and would have been 10 if one more person showed. One player opted out not to give someone a bye.
There was one new player to the store who came from the Source.
Hopefully so more locals come out so we can keep it up in 2 weeks.
This store alternates Saturdays with modern.

Thanks for keeping up with the posts in here WorstBandNameEver.
As he stated we are working on getting Legacy off the ground here. For the past several weeks of Legacy we have had at least 8 each week. We are hoping to grow more and more each week as more players find out. Our FNM events average 30 - 35 players and go as high as 60 , we are hoping to reach an average like that for legacy.

Akuma or anyone else who plays at Time Zone- is this an advanced metagame, is it all undeveloped decks or a mix of the two. I live just south in Old Bridge and am now available on Saturdays. Im hoping its more advanced because I would really like to test myself. Thanks!

If you come to play, you will mostly be paired against serious decks. There is not a ton of budget and subpar strategies. Just a few people run shocks of ABUR duals in some cases. That's the only budget choice you might see.

Yes I would say the metagame is advanced. The players here understand Legacy and play it very well. 90-95% of the deck are top tier decks suck as Reanimator, Sneak & Show, Omni-Tell, Stoneblade and more. I am certain you will be tested but also have a great time playing. The group of Legacy players we built up are very nice and very fun to play against but also at the same time will make you work for a win.

Figured I would just throw this out there for those who are thinking of coming to Time Zone. While I have only played Legacy there twice, the people are really friendly and everyone gets along great. And I also don't think I've seen two players play the same/similar deck on the same day which makes for a great metagame. I'm glad I got involved and can't wait for more.

I wouldn't be opposed to raising entry to $10. Then maybe the top 4 get store credit like they currently do but in addition #'s 5-8 receive a booster of their choice priced at $4? More people receiving something for playing couldn't hurt.

I disagree on this suggestion. If that's all you want, you might as well just buy the pack on your own for those spots (6 for the tourney - 4 for the pack) - It's the same thing.
WorstBandNameEver
06-24-2013, 08:05 AM
I am fine with $6 as of now. It's not a huge investment if you plan to play every week. I'm not overly interested in a pack and would rather have the store credit myself.
I guess another option is to pick a Saturday and run a bigger event that might cost from $15-30 and play for bigger prizes. We would likely get some more people out for that across the area and some might pop back in on the smaller days on occasion. These kind of events are tough though for many reasons.
I'm sure there are other creative ways to bring in people who have not played there before and boost attendance as well.

Not really. $6 goes to the pool for the top 4. Then because the cost is $10 at least those in 5-8th place are getting something for their efforts (I suppose this could be store credit too).
I also like the idea of a bigger prize event once in a while. It just sounds difficult to retain the players for the smaller events.

I would go along with the idea of a bigger entry fee, if it would ensure a bigger attendance. Generally while it does tend to be the same people weekly, at least there is the variance in that most people don't play the same deck so at least it doesn't get stale. While some may get turned off by the bigger outlay of cash, maybe more welcome the "bigger prizes" - maybe that may outweigh any loss of players?
One thing I did mention was that next month has the Mox Sapphire Tourney coming to the Somerville area, July 20th (a Saturday). I made the suggestion which will probably be noted this week that our tourney scheduled for the same day, will probably be moved to the Sunday. It might be short notice but maybe we can have one tourney a month (such as that Sunday) as a Super-tourney testing out the idea of a bigger entry fee.

Hey guys thanks for tossing some ideas around. Figured I would post my thoughts on some of your ideas . Feel free to discuss and suggest.
1- Raising entry to $10 to allow a pack for 5-8th : Not sure how I personally feel about it since as Shaggai noted it is basically you are buying yourself a pack. In my opinion from a player standpoint I would not like it since I am basically buying my own pack.
Suggestion : Raising entry to $8 per player . This would allow us to add a little bit more to the prize pool and also do a random prize for someone who does not make the top cut. Everyone in the Top 4 would get a little more in their prize pool and then we can additionally award a small prize to one random player who does not reach the top.
2- Once a month or Bi-monthly hold a big tournament : This is something I am not opposed to and would enjoy it. If we can get enough players interested we would be more than happy to do this. We used to do them but backed away from it as everyone said they wanted to do them and would even ask for specific prizes then not show for any of them. I am fine with trying it again and see how it goes.
Suggestion : I think Bi-monthly would probably be best as it allows more promotion of the event and would give me more time in between events to find the cards or think of good prizes. Tournaments would have an entry fee and a suggested prize pay out based on a minimum number of players. If we do not hit the minimum then prizes would be adjusted with all of entries as always going to prizes. On the other hand if we get more players than the minimum then prizes will be raised. All it takes is player interest and attendance to keep the big events happening.
3- Big tournament July 21st - I personally do not see that working out as most players including myself will most likely be attending the Mox Sapphire tournament and from my experience most players do not like doing those kind of events back to back days and the high cost back to back puts players off.
Suggestion : I will see if we can an event the weekend after the Mox tournament.
4- 10 Proxy Vintage tournament : I would consider that but I would like to see if we can get the bigger Legacy events off the ground first then add that tot he schedule also.

1-Even though I suggested the cost of entry increase I certainly don't mind it going to $8 or even staying at $6. I guess my point was that players 5-8 getting a prize (pack, $, whatever) could be beneficial in helping to attract/ retain new players.
2- Bi- monthly big prize tournaments is probably best. Not sure how much you have to increase the cost on entry in order to run one, but I could imagine a much bigger entry cost each month could be off-putting to some players.
3-If you moved your normal Saturday Legacy tourney to the Sunday after the Mox tournament I would attend. But you are correct I would not pay big entry fees even for two big prize events on the same weekend.
4-Makes sense

One thing I like about our Legacy crowd as opposed to other crowds is all you guys are understanding and understand how a tournament is run. That is why I wanted to get everyone's input on the events. We average 12 people right now, sometimes slightly lower sometimes slightly higher, personally I think extending prize down to 5-8 might be a little much until we get a bigger crowd to make it more feasible . 8 out of 12 getting prize just seems odd in my opinion, that is why I understood your point and thought of adding an additional random prize for someone not in the top. I think it helps reward someone for playing and also for sticking through the whole tournament instead of dropping. Anyone who drops or leaves would not be eligible for it anymore. Both ideas will be under advisement and I will see what I can work out. A good example of my idea would be
13 players enter
1st - $30
2nd - $20
3rd - $10
4th - $10
One random player not in the top gets $8
Concerning the bigger prized events it is a trial and error thing on the first few. Not knowing an expected turnout makes it harder on me but you learn from each one. Lets say we do a tournament with this structure
1st - Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2nd - Tundra
3rd - Wasteland
4th - Wasteland
That is a prize pool total of around $390 . To give that prize support out we would need 20 players at $20 each. Even 18 players I would still be able to give out said prizes and just take the hit since it minimal. If we got more than 20 players then we would keep adding to the prize pool. Obviously if only 10 show up we could not do that kind of prize support but we could do like
1st - Tundra
2nd - Wasteland
3rd - something around $40 in value
This was just to give you guys a heads up of my thinking and how somethings could work out.

I like the idea of having a Big Tournament at least once I month. I know people at The Only Game in Town travel all the way to Vestal, NY, to play in Jupiter Games' NELCs. Now, we don't have to do something on that scale, but my point is that I think having a big tournament wouldn't have too much problem attendance-wise since there's decently sized Legacy community in North Jersey that doesn't have their own big tournaments to look forward to. It's usually a matter of waiting for a Star City that's driving distance to come around or going to a tourney in Upstate NY or Philly.
Also, the random prize thing is a good way to encourage to people to not drop. My LGS back in Cleveland always gave one random person an FNM foil if they stayed for the whole FNM even if they didn't get first or second place. They even made a game out of it by seeing who got the highest roll with a D20 usually. The owner also did something similar for big prize support tournaments they held as well where a random person or two won a whole booster box. It wasn't just limited to small tournaments.

I like the idea of having a Big Tournament at least once I month. I know people at The Only Game in Town travel all the way to Vestal, NY, to play in Jupiter Games' NELCs. Yea we do the same with FNM , and actually that is how Wizards says it is to be done. They give you 4 FNM promos per week and tell you that the Top 2 get 1 each and then 2 randoms get the other 2. I roll a D20 also and what number comes up is the number I use from the standings, so 15 means 15th place, 9 means 9th place and so on.

I'm glad I stayed for the championship. I've only met a few champions in my life. A spelling bee champion, a chili cook-off champion, and a tic-tac-toe champion. But now, I can say I know a real life magic the gathering champion. Another check on the ol' bucket list.

Yea well those are the breaks... Going back to the prize support thing- I think the best way to attract new players would be to have all proceeds go towards purchasing a crown for each weeks Champion. How many stores offer that?

I knew being addicted to Carolina Whoppers would be good for something else...(I just hope Burger King still gives away those crowns).

So beginning this weekend a couple changes to Legacy on Saturdays. One started as joke but most people seemed to like it.
1- All entries collected will still go into the prize pool as always. The difference now will be that 10% of the total prize pool will be given to a random person who does not get into the top. So this means 10% goes to a random person and 90% is divided among the top cut. Players who drop before the cut to top will not be eligible for the random prize.
2- The winner of the previous week will have the choice to wear a crown that we have for the tournament the next week. This was joked around at the past tournament and enough people thought it would be a fun idea. So I found an entertaining crown that should be good for laughs.

No Legacy for pre-release weekend July 13th. Sorry for this guys. Also the following week Legacy will be on Sunday July 21st instead of Saturday. This will allow everyone to be able to head over to the Mox tournament

May want to get attention of the mods here since the Legacy event does necessarily fire every other week anymore, maybe they'll edit the original post title...
