Prior to this month’s Duel for the Duels I was playing nonstop manaless dredge and even tossed some money into LED dredge. After about two weeks of playing LED dredge I realized it was not as much fun as manaless so I decided to sell my LEDs. With this being said Deathrite mania had begun. With so many elvish shamans running around manaless was becoming more and more difficult to play. While mulling over combo decks on the Source I stumbled upon two decks that I thought seemed rather interesting, a mono red sneak attack deck made by a Jupiter local named Henry, and RUG Hypergenesis, which Todd Anderson and Kaitlin Lindburg made popular a while back. My main reason for wanting to play something in this style is the fact that how often do you get to put the three biggest, baddest, scariest creatures in magic in the same deck. What would make a deck including Griselbrand, Emrakul and Progenitus even better is having them all on the field at the same time! So a week before NELC I decided to go with Hypergenesis so I traded in a decent amount of cards to Channel Fireball almost not getting my deck in time I had to get it overnighted to my place, it arrived a day prior to NELC. The night prior a few friends that were attending NELC came over my place in order to cut down on their 2-3 hour commute to Jupiter. What happened was last minute drunk play testing resulting in sub-par amounts of sleep and a rough morning waking up at 7:30. The 6 of us arrive at Jupiter around 10:20 register for the event and then we’re off. There are a total of 84 people playing with 7 rounds of swiss plus top 8.

Round 1 against Ben Williams on Burn: Ben sits down and we have our pleasantries and like usual I lose the roll. His first turn gets in a guide and swings for 2, triggers a taiga off the top. I play a fetch and pass, next turn he gets another guide in and hits for 4, the trigger is I think a Progenitus. I crack my wooded foothills needing blue so I grab a tropical island thus is the beginning of my downfall. I play the taiga and remove a spirit guide for Shardless agent. I put in Progenitus and Griselbrand. He plays some mountains, I pass to him he plays a lava spike, I force it taking me to twelve. He then follows up with flame rift, price of progress and a frieblast to kill me. I take out the 4 misdirections and add in my 4 leylines of sanctity. Opening hand has business and leyline. I plop the leyline and after a turn or two play an Emrakul for the win. The game after is almost to the same result although I’m not sure of the fatties that were tossed in.

(1-0)

At this point im feeling pretty damn good about the creature version of superfriends as someone called it.
Round 2 against Sam (Sawm) Higgins on GWB Nic Fit: Sam is a very nice guy who just finished up playing one of my friends the round prior. Game one seemed very uneventful, I had a hand with force and misdirection. I misdirectioned a cabal therapy, then later forced a hymn I go off turn three or 4 playing a Griselbrand drawing seven into a cascade spell into hyperegensis into hasty emrakul. I toss out the 4 misdirections for 4 leyline of sanctity. I keep a hand that can go off turn 1 yet I get blind therapied for the most random and amazing therapy ever simian spirit guide. He hits two of them, I feel like that’s the blow out. I then draw play a land and pass. He plays vet and therapys it to pull my shardless agents, to make things worse he extirpates the agents. I am left with Griselbrand and Progenitus and the only way for me to win is to pull a violent outburst off the top. Next draw violent outburst cascade Griselbrand and Progenitus to his Primeval titan. I pass does some stuff searching for a card by spinning top and then scoops.

Lunch Break

Round 3 against Alex Stratton on UW blade:
I’ll start this out by saying this seems to be one of my worst match ups. I have a hand with the business and a force I attempt to go off turn 2 he spell pierces it, I force back he lets the genesis resolve. Unfortunately all I have left is an Emrakul and he plays a karakas. Needless to say I didn’t get there that game. Game two I toss in Terastodon and get countered and clicked out of the game. Feeling kind of bummed but hell his deck is a crap ton of counter spells what can yah do.

(2-1)

Round 3 against Michael “Hollywood” Keller on manaless dredge:
I can start this out by saying I feel a bit nervous sitting across from Hollywood. Playing manaless dredge myself I know how good of a player his is, for god sakes he invented the manaless deck I normally run. I sit down and bs with him for a bit tell him I’m on something different this time around due to all the deathrites. And were off I keep a decent hand with only one Griselbrand, unfortunately he also has one in hand I go off early and he plays his Griselbrand after I play mine needless to say they die he dread returns his and it gets there. I pull out misdirections for leyline of the void. I get one in my opener without enough land to go off but I know that I can time walk him for a bit. He opens plays an arbor and passes. There is nothing for a few turns he arbors me down to 16. Then I go off with, Emrakul, Griselbrand, and Progenitus. He scoops and goes for his board, exclaiming he is going to make me work for my leyline. I draw a hand with a leyline again and he doesn’t seem scared, I play the leyline and pass he plays an arbor and reverent silence, I force it he plays another in response it resolves. I go to 30 life and he gets time walked for 3-4 turns. This is all the time I need to find what I want and play the superfriends.

(3-1)

At this point in the day I am very excited because I’ve beaten an idol of mine and done better then I’ve ever expected since I started playing the deck the night before.
Round 4 against James Rynkiewicz on Jund:
James plays at the normal game store that I play at and I have seen him around a bit but what was new knowledge to me was that he had won a legacy grand prix in 2011. Going into this match I was incredibly nervous because of the caliber of player James is. The game is sort of a daze for me I ended up making a play mistake and almost losing the game because of my nerves although the judge was easily able to reverse the game state. In the first game I ended up durdling until I hit a land and then won on turn 3. Pulled out the misdirection’s for Leylines of sanctity and such is usual I hit one in my opening hand and proceeded to win shortly after. After James and I spoke about the match up and how abysmal it was for him.
4-1

Top 8 at this point looks pretty promising.

Round 6 against Dan Rae on Shardless BUG:
This matchup seems slightly in my favor and the hand I pulled was 8 cards. The nerves were getting to me and I made a dumb mistake. The head judge was called and they proceeded to roll a dice and remove 2 cards. My hand was very explosive but lacked force or misdirection as they were just removed by the judge. I draw it out hoping to pull a force but I do not. He hymns me turn 2 and in response I pitch 2 spirit guides tap a land and outburst. He forces the hypergenesis I then get pummeled by mean creatures. I side out again the misdirection’s for leylines of sanctity. Which again save my butt the next two games I land a leyline and just proceed to cascade into hypergenesis for the win playing an assortment of my 3 favorite creatures in magic and a haste creator.
(5-1)

I can now draw into the top 8 this is the best I’ve ever done in any tournament. I walk over to my final opponent Li Si Ning knowing he is on TES and ranked number one. I see he is pulling out his mat I ask if he wants to draw into the top 8, he responds no… dream crushed.

Round 7 Li Si Ning on TES:
Li seems nice and apologizes for doing this but says he wants to keep his top rank going into the top 8. This means that I have to win this in order to be in the top 8 at all. Pressures on and I’m bumming hard, he takes game one without an issue just rips my hand apart with therapy and goes off I force him once at a key point delaying him a turn but that is it. Again misdirection out Leyline of Sanctity in. I open leyline into a turn 2 show and tell emrakul and pass. He looks at his hand draws and scoops. Next game a little more eventful, I get a Griselbrand out and a leyline he proceeds to try and go off and ad nauseam to 1 I draw 14 cards looking for a force, alas no force was found. He is stuck with a full grip and only black and red mana he needs to get a LED crack it tutor for something to remove my Leyline. He has no LED and plays ad nauseam again through past in flames to hope for a top deck led, hits burning wish. I am now ranked number one in the whole tournament at 6-1-0.

Going into the top 8 we all speak about splitting the top 8 and we decide not to since the sources own “Rock Lee” the boss himself wants to play it out. We take our pictures and get our pins then proceed to the games ahead.

Top 8 round 1 Michael Cutrone on ANT:
Mike is incredibly nice and it was a great way to end my day. I’ll come right out and say it, TES and ANT scare the bejebus out of me. I've seen what they can do and it is no fun for me at all. Game one my hand is irrelevant because after his cabals and such I didn't have one. Then I was stormed out with tendrils. Game 2 I toss in leyline of sanctity, but he knows my list and tosses in chain of vapor. I hit a leyline and a turn 2 Emrakul forcing him to go off. And he Ad nauseums into 2 chain of vapor and kills me.

I finish in 5th place overall! Not disappointed in the slightest and I thoroughly love this hypergenesis list. My one friend Rich Cali that came with us finished first place with his esper-blade list. All and all a fun eventful trip, winning myself a playset of Savannah's wasn't all that bad either.

Nice finish.

In your first round, a general rule of thumb is to not Force of Will a burn spell unless it's going to deal more than three damage to you. One of the reasons Burn is a Tier 3 deck, IMO, is that it just folds to combo decks like Hypergenesis, barring mistakes or bad keeps by the combo player.

Thanks for that huge compliment, Blayne. You did very well and came prepared enough to get the job done in an unprepared meta. Excellent job!

just a question: what deck is better in this meta: death and taxes or goblins? i've done bad with goblins in the past but i think that was just me...

This is rather off topic, but i feel goblins is just a better deck then death and taxes. That is just my personal opinion. But what do i know i play janky combo.

In a grindy meta I would take death and taxes over goblins in a heart beat.... otherwise Goblins all the way.

This is obviously from a while ago but I feel I should explain what seems like a really random Therapy: I had the double-Therapy start off of Veteran Explorer so I wanted to make sure you couldn't go off turn 1. Trying to hit fast mana is obviously the way to do that. I remember seeing SSG but not ESG in game 1. But yeah that was probably the best blind Therapy ever haha. It was a pleasure playing against you and I was glad to see you do well.
