View Full Version : MOCS Preliminary - 1st with Reanimator
Ugh, looks like I accidentally deleted my entire report of the Prelims :(. In the end I won the finals of the MOCS season 1. You can see my tournament report in video format here https://vimeo.com/60444614

Thank you sir, I'll write you something tomorrow. I just finished my 2nd preliminary and ended 5-1, which is good enough for a regular promo FoW.
URB ANT 1-2 In game 2 I play a fetch when I should have played a non-fetch land, and the mistake proves to be fatal. In game 3 I draw mono bricks with Gris but still have him dead unless he has Tendrils in hand. He had it.
BUG control 2-1
BW discard deck with Tombstalkers and Lilliana 2-0
BUG control 2-0
BUG Delver 2-1
Jund 2-0
The matches against the BUG decks were excruciatingly hard to win. I had to fight through an endless stream of graveyard hate, Hymns, counters and planeswalkers.
Won the MOCS! Pairings here:
:
Jund 2-1
Jund 2-0
UBr ANT 2-1
Junk with red for Huntmaster 1-2 (he made top8)
Jund 2-1
UW RIP/Helm 2-1
Andrew Cuneo with Elves 2-1
Win and in match: AJ Sacher with Shardless BUG 2-0
Top8:
RUG Delver 2-1
Paul Rietzl with Bug Delver 2-0
Sneak and Show 2-0

Congrats! AJ was streaming that match. It looked like you dispatched him pretty easily (he was hiding his hand so we couldn't see). How do you feel about the consistency of the deck itself? Maybe I'll take it for a stroll sometime.

Thanks =). The deck is incredibly consistent. Very rarely does the deck take a complete dump on me and not allow me to do anything. You can almost always stitch a gameplan together, but sometimes you really need to think outside the box. Throughout the tournament I discarded to hand size to enable reanimation and also ended up hard-casting the creatures in order to win.
AJ's hand in game 2 was weak when I Thoughtseized him. I'd even consider it a mulligan, because it didn't really do much to stop me. This was kind of a recurring theme actually. Many people really didn't know how to play against me, and they constantly misevaluated both their own as well as my cards. Moving forward this is probably going to change. People will probably respect the deck more and learn how to play against it. Some might even realize that 4 maindeck anti-graveyard cards with summoning sickness are not gonna cut it by themselves

Thank you! I note with pleasure which play the classic list and not That New with Emrakul and Goryo vengeance!!
One question: why JMS?

I had been under the impression that Legacy on MTGO was chock full of Belcher due to the lack of available FoWs. Looks like that's changed?

Not much. But with FoW as the promo card of the month it will help.

Jace is mostly for UW Miracles and other control decks with few creatures. It's a pretty narrow card, but very good in certain situations. I would easily have lost my match against UW without him, since he had multiple Rest in Peaces and Sowers.

Like Lejay said, the FoW promo they gave out probably changed a lot. Normally there's a lot of Belcher in the dailies, but with an increase in the number of FoW decks, people probably realized it was a bad choice. This event was also the first MOCS under the new system, which requires you to have 35 qualifier points to join instead of the old 15. Simply because the event was harder to enter than usual, a good deal of the Burn and Belcher players were probably excluded (omg prejudice). The event was also insane value with top64 getting a foil FoW ($200) + booster packs, so there was a big incentive to actually play a real deck. Those kinds of decks were also part of the reason I played Reanimator. I was kinda expecting them in significant numbers, but as I'm typing this I realize I most likely shouldn't have. Luckily, the deck turned out to be insane against basically everything. If the Legacy dailies keep firing, the Belcher and Burn decks will probably return like nothing happened. Low effort decks are just always going to be popular on MTGO because they are usually cheap to build and allow you to play multiple matches at once.

Congrats! Winning a MOCS is a big deal, I'm going to Boston next month for the finals of 2012. For those of you unaware the invite is worth an EV of around 7000, a guaranteed 4000 all the way up to 25000 depending on how you do in the 16 man tournament :) I failed in the 1 preliminary I did (I had 29 QPs -_-) but hopefully I'll just win MOCS 2012 so I auto qualify for next year :P

Thanks, and good luck dude =)
I made a compilation of the games. Unfortunately MODO has eaten a bunch of the replays already. Turn off HD if the video is killing your connection and/or computer: https://vimeo.com/60444614
There's some strange bug on MODO at the moment that causes the ONS fetches to look weird, in case anyone's wondering.
Play was much less perfect than I remember it. Against ANT g2 I think I should have gone Iona instead. Was too worried about Karakas and Wipe Away because I had seen them floating around in ANT lists lately, although I probably shouldn't have concerned about them the way that game played out. Luckily, that -7 was the best ever. Looks like he punted by not using IT for another Therapy, unless I'm missing something. Turns out he also played 3 Grafdigger's Cage which I had no outs to, so I just dodged an infinite amount of bullets altogether.
