Counter target spell. It's Controller can't cast spells this turn.

Its
That said, card is good but 3 mana counterspells are just not playable in this format. Unless they're force or they do something better i guess. I guess flusterstorm is the best storm-hate counterspell we can get, this costing 3 really kills it.

A pretty version of Cancel. At least in the Eternal formats.
Seems really bad for all the same reasons Cancel is bad. I don't think the W you are paying justifies the Silence that gets attached to it. It would be amazing if it costs one less mana though.

Needs more Split Second. Not that I would like that in the first place.

I had really hoped for a Black Silence-Effect ... geeez

You have Cancel and pretty in the same sentence. Something went horribly wrong.

Picture shows a FOIL version ... sentence is valid

Actually no, his comment is correct. Cancel looks ugly no matter how much shiny you put on it.

Seems to be confirmed by SCG. They got a non-blurry version somewhere. See:

I'm trying to figure out a way if this card even matters. In Legacy, 3 CMC counterspell better read "draw a card" in order to make them playable. In Modern, 3 mana to counter a spell (and not even guaranteed like Counterflux) will usually be the end of the turn anyway, since how much mana do decks have to continue playing spells? In Standard, same issue and Dispel sees play.
So in short, how is the :w: portion of this spell relevant?
Pretty awful card in Eternal formats.

Cancel (and the Dimir 3cc counter) was pretty underwhelming in draft. This is only a little better. It won't get played in Legacy and I don't know enough about the other formats to comment on them.

It'll see play in Draft/Block.

Sweet card. Should be fun in EDH.

I guess it stops storm decks and decks that dump their creatures (Elves & Affinity), but definitely not better than anything already available.
However, it does seem alright in a Scepter-still build, if that's still a thing.

Can't even use it with Isochron Scepter.

Sadly. It would be amazing if you could.
Maybe some other way of recurring it...?

Seems bad. 3cc Counterspell + Silence doesn't seem like something any deck in Legacy would want. Maybe as some weird anti-Storm card? Usually if they cast Silence and I counter it, they'll try to go off if they feel I'm out of counters and just bluffing that I had the 2x FoW.

Sweet card. It makes me sad this probably won't get play in eternal formats because it costs too much. Would it be playable if it had Split Second?

Koby raised a good point; usually your opponent won't be casting more than 1 spell per turn, so the Silence part of it doesn't really do too much unless you know that your opponent was going to cast a bunch of spells in a single turn. Otherwise, it's just Cancel.

Versus any non storm deck you'd rather have Absorb for the same price. And Absorb sucks.

Could this be used in response to a cascade trigger to effectively counter both the original and cascaded spells?

Yes. It would be simply a better version of Double Negative. I can't imagine this being played in Legacy.

As I first saw it I was pretty amazed. But you are right, the CC is to high for Legacy.
Also, it can't counter a storm already on the stack, right? It needs to counter a setup spell before the actual storm card.
I wonder how it would have been if it were a fuse split card.

This is the only good use I've seen for this card. Besides some deck that wants to support Martyr of Sands and Force of Will.

the card seems pretty bad for legacy.
Imo, a :w: kicker for silence would have been better (a kinda counterspell with kicker for niche uses)

It should totally have been a Fuse card with :1::u::u: counter target spell and :w: Silence.

Agreed, that would have been nice.
