I've heard different things about the results. Is it possible to alter foils and what are the results like?

I would worry about the moisture from the paint warping the card.

I haven't actually tried altering a foil card but I suppose you could do so. Wouldn't that ruin the point of it being foil since it was painted over? Might as well just alter a normal card.

You can get some really awesome results from altering foils. Matte paint isn't the only option, -you can selectively erase the paint layer with acetone and to get a shiny effect.

Here's a card with plain matte paint,

I saw this youtube video where the guy suggested using Mercadian Masques foils as they were the best to work with when stripping the paint away with acetone while still retaining the shine. You may be right as his results were very cool to see.
