For all you Vintage/Legacy championships attendees that haven't heard the news, it looks like they will not be at Gencon this year. Wotc has not announced the date/time yet but Helen Bergeot recently said on her twitter that they will asap. Hopefully they take this opportunity to raise the prize support (the paintings are mega sweet put payout down to 8th was usually not great, u.s. Bazaar of Moxen anyone XD) and run a better event in general.

While I think it is terrible to announce it so relatively close to GenCon (since people really need to plan for that), it is a great opportunity for them to step up their game and impress us :)

Well, there goes my #1 reason to head to Indy. So it goes.

Not at GenCon, huh. I guess they're making them a separate event?

That is definitely what it looks like.

This is a good news.

The Championships deserve a bigger stage than just being sideevents on a "Tabletop Convention". Hopefully they use the opportunity to combine it with MTG WORLDS and will finally become a moving event which deserves the title of being "World" Championship than the 130 people Vintage events they were at some point with +90% american participants. :/

Sorry but that always a joke imo

Well that's disappointing (considering I've been going to GenCon every year for the past 7 years or so now).

I hope they at least take this opportunity to make them better...

This is really crappy to all the people who plan their GenCon trip around or partially based on Champs. I have to wonder if they told the vendors about this earlier, because I'd imagine this would mean fewer people looking for legacy and vintage staples.

I agree with the hopful sentiment. It would be amazing if this was made as big a deal as they make Pro Tours. I know that I and a lot of other people would be happy to watch coverage of the champs, rather than the usual "here's the top 8 and one tourney report" crap.

Wow fuck me. Takes months of advance planning to get days off at my current job. Glad they waited until now to screw over hundreds that already have badges/hotels/planes (I was going to this weekend).

I agree with all of those statements. I don't think a person could argue any other way. That said, waiting until May 9th to declare that gencon will not be hosting those 2 tournaments is inexcusable. I got 9th and 18th in the 2 vintage champs I've played in and it didn't 'feel' that successful. I would love to play in the Bazaar of Moxen someday (the true vintage world champs).

There is talk about a BoM in the states as well. I can't remember the names involved, but there is definitely talk about making it happen.

Can anyone chime in on this? I know some of the big Vintage heads should know more about this.

The issue is not Wizards (lack of an affirmative announcement at all...) communication. The issue is that GenCon is catastrophically difficult to plan for, hellaciously expensive, and that the most vocal of complaints are coming from people who were only attending for the tournament in the first place. This is like having a Hero Clix tourney at SDCC - the barrier to participation should be skill, not winning the registration/hotel booking lottery. Not to mention the Security concerns from last year...

Glad a tourney with smaller turnout than a decent PTQ is still getting some recognition. But the Legacy champs almost doubled it last year, and both combined would make for a disappointing GP.

gencon is fun, but if you are only there to play magic, the barrier to entry is High.

The timing is indeed bullshit for all those who had to get days off from work, booked flights and hotels in advance.

"This year" or "the next years"? I would not wonder if they keep the event in the US for several reasons. I guess she did not drop a hint for the "new frame" the Champs will be held at after GenCon? I would laugh my ass off if they move the 2 Champs into being sideevents at the US CHAMPS

Timing on this is fucking awful ... Gencon badge and hotel registration is in January and is a huge pain in the ass involving a 10 minute mad rush to secure con rate rooms and such. I imagine those flying in also book their flights after securing housing. What a fisting to those coming from overseas.

I'm still going to go to Gen Con, and I'm still going to have a great time, but it really was nice to be able to play in a giant Vintage tournament without having to travel to France.

Honestly, I cared nothing for the fact that it was "Champs." Can they not just run a Vintage event at call it something else?

Not mad at this at all as long as Champs stay in US.

Europe already has enough sanctioned Vintage, it's pretty much the only sanctioned event in the US, and I don't think anywhere but the US and Europe make sense logistically.

It's pretty much the only event I actually plan to play in at some point. I just don't have the fire inside for the game I used to but it's nice to play with only old school heads every once in a while.

That said GenCon was a terrible venue.

#1 The thieves - Unfortunately that was handled VERY WELL last year and now they are moving the event again and I have concerns that security might not be strict enough. Still GenCon is full of thieves. I think a lot of the shadier characters were caught off guard last year by wristbands but would have happily followed you all day to steal your $6000 deck this year (or just catch you at a grinder which had no security/wristbands)

#2 Fuck GenCon - Seriously some of the most basement dwelling neckbeards I've ever seen in my life. The reason it was shameful to be into nerdy shit in my generation on parade. Oh and the farts, so many farts. Not even to mention the logistics of going to Indianapolis during GenCon is a nightmare and more expensive based on supply/demand of hotel rooms. Oh and I have to spend $75 on a pass just to get to the event which is another $X to enter. Also GenCon is just far too long for me. I get burned out after day 2 every time I've gone.

#3 GenCon - If you were actually into GenCon you spend 2 days of it playing Vintage and potentially 3 if you play Legacy also.

Afaik, Vintage and Legacy worlds _are_ held in Europe annually (Bazaar of Moxen).

Wizards is a buck short and a day late.

I'm still going as well. I'll work on a trophy ... a Juzam made of play dough ... Gencon is still the best place on earth to buy and sell Magic: The Gathering cards. BoM was utter failure in that regard as there was only one French vendor with a bunch shit language cards and awful prices.

Yeah it would only be fair to take away the last large unsanctioned Vintage event in America and give it to Europe where they already have infinite unsanctioned vintage.

How about this. America gets BOM next year and you guys can have Vintage Wolrds over there? That sounds fair ;)

How come this is only a X2 event? That is the same as a Game Day and less than a Grand Prix Qualifier. Heck, a StarCity event is x3 and GenCon 2012 had 350+ Vintage players and 450+ Legacy players in each respective championship. X2 is a slap in the face for a supposed “Championships”.
