After reading Pulp_Fiction's Tournament Report (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?23104-2-2-With-Nourishing-Lich-%28Not-a-joke%29-This-was-a-Real-Tourney) on Nourishing Lich it became one of the decks I had to play at some point due to how much fun he made it sound. For awhile I had most of the cards set aside then 2 weeks ago 2 friends and I decided to play bad/outdated decks one week for fun. We ended up playing the following:
Myself: Nourishing Lich
Kade: UW Trix
Aaron: Leylines
I played a list similar to Pulp's with a couple changes:
-1 City of Brass (couldn't find my 4th)
+1 Underground Sea
-1 Sickening Dreams
+1 Laboratory Maniac
Then a few SB changes since I no longer have Leyline of Sanctity.
The tournament was only 9 people (holiday weekend), so again it was nothing major.
Round 1 vs Aggro Elves
This was a new player to the store and before we started I had saw she was playing a casual (didn't look like combo) Elf deck.
Game 1: I keep what I thought was a decent hand with lands and cantrips but I only manage to find more lands before I'm beat down by Nissa's Chosen and Jorga Warcaller.
Game 2: I keep a good hand where I only needed Lich and/or mana to go off. She gets out a turn 2 Leatherback Baloth and beats me with it next turn while building up her elf army. Her next turn she swings at me with everything except the Baloth taking me down to 3. She realizes after that she could have killed me. But she wouldn't have since I had 2x Shoal and 2x Wurm in hand so I could have just gained 15 life. The following turn I proceed to play Lich then draw 30. I follow that up with Laboratory Maniac then draw the rest of my library.
Game 3: She has another fast hand but I just need 1 card to be able to go off. I have the option to stay alive using Shoal, but it would only delay my death 1 turn and even then I'd have no way to build up my hand again so I die.
0-1; 1-2
Round 2 vs Leylines
We played a couple games the previous week and I have no outs to Leyline of Punishment. I had completely forgot about this until after the round.
Game 1: He kills me on turn 2 after drawing Opalescence.
Game 2: He gets another decent start and I get mana flooded.
0-2; 1-4
Round 3 vs Bye
Kade (Trix) and Aaron (Leylines) get paired up so I watch them. Kade wins in 2, but game 2 saw Kade try to Donate Illusions to Aaron when he had Leyline of Sanctity out. Aaron eventually gets out 4 LoS and Kade only has one way to deal with them (Echoing Truth) unlses Aaron plays Opalescence. After about 10mins of Draw-Go he finally finds it near the bottom of his deck. Funny thing is that Kade didn't have Truth in there until they played last week and he realized that he had no out to multiple Leylines.
1-2; 1-4
Round 4 vs UW Mill
This was the boyfriend/husband/whatever of the Elves player in round 1.
Game 1: I know he's playing mill since I sat at the table next to him Round 1. Due to that I make sure he's tapped out when I Enlightened Tutor for Lich. The next time he taps out I play Lich then start drawing cards. I use Shoal twice still not finding a win condition and count my library to see if I can Shoal again - exactly 15 cards. I draw the rest then proceed to Sickening Shoal for the win.
Game 2: I open the following: Gemstone Mine, Lotus Petal, Dark Ritual, Shoal, Summoner's Pact (or Autochron Wurm, can't remember), Land, Some card that wasn't Lich. I obviously keep and since I'm on the draw I hope for the Lich off the top for the turn 1 kill. Sadly, it didn't happen. I eventually get a Tutor then wait for him to tap out since I know he has counters (specifically Counterspell). He does then I tutor for the Lich and proceed to go off on my turn. After I give him Nightmares he tells me he shouldn't have tapped out since he did in fact have the counterspell.
2-2; 3-4 overall
When it comes to this deck, Pulp_Fiction put it best:
Overall, this deck is absurdly broken at times and its a total piece of shit most of it. Now, I am not sure how many people have seriously played this deck before but .... it is well worth the price of admission. It is absolutely horrible in every way. It loses to discard spells, it loses to counters, and it losese to Disenchants. My experience with Lixch is this; you can not play a worse combo deck, but at the same time, its actually really good when it works.
If you ever get the chance, you should definitely try it out, the responses alone from opponents is worth it.
