I am proud to announce that Top Deck Games and CardTitan will be hosting this year's Vintage and Legacy Champs in Philadelphia, PA. Both events will be giving out over $10,000 in prizes. There will be artists. There will be vendors. There will be some sick side events. There will be live coverage. There will be excellent security. Take off work now, make travel arrangements; this will be a weekend that you should not miss.
Going forward, www.CardTitan.com/eternal_weekend will be the best source for all information about the weekend.
The first 400 unique players who register for either Legacy or Vintage Champs will receive this sweet Tarmogoyf playmat! Preregistration is live on the event page as of now!

Probably would not be unreasonable to put the date somewhere in your announcement.

It took me a while to see where he added the date. November 1-3.
Any hotel deals nearby?
What plans are there for extremely large turnout (say >410)? 10 rounds + Top 8 is fatigue when it comes to playing MTG in one day.
When do you anticipate announcing the prizes for 2-64th?
(I realize there's alot of unknowns at this point, but would be helpful for planning a trip to PA)

What kind of security will there be for this event? And what precautionary measures against theft will be taken?

Also with Koby on this.
What kind of security will there be for this event? And what precautionary measures against theft will be taken? This was one of my first concerns, especially if I'm taking borrowed power for vintage.

My next comment was said on facebook from someone else, so I'm just going to quote them.
"I'm very happy that this was finally announced, but as a primarily Legacy player, I'm not so excited because I play in 10k Legacy tournaments all the time on the SCG circuit. This still looks like a great weekend of Eternal Magic, but I was hoping for more, even if that was a greedy thought."

Do you have to play in the legacy prelim on Friday to pay in the event Saturday? I would love to go on Saturday but I really cannot miss work Friday. Excited this is in the Tristate area.

That's certainly a good problem to have. I'm sure it'll be addressed if it comes to it, but Champs in the past has always been an all day event, no exception.
In regards to security, as a Philly resident I'd say our law enforcement is pretty awesome.
I can't wait!

To address a few of the questions posted in this thread:
1) Security is a major concern. I personally have had well over $10,000 in cards stolen from me, and I will be making every effort to ensure that there are many passive and active deterrents to theft at this event. Because of it's nature, I will not be publicizing everything we are doing to secure the event.
2) Hotel Deals: We will be posting hotel deals as the event gets closer; pay attention to this thread or www.cardtitan.com/eternal_weekend for that information.
3) The Legacy Prelim is not necessary to play in the main event. it is an opportunity for players to win a Round 1 Bye in Legacy Champs (and a chance to get that last round of testing in).
Thanks,
-Nick

Attendance of that level is not unheard of. Examples of SCG Open attendance:
2/12/2012 Cincinnati 297
8/5/2012 Washington DC 350
12/2/2012 Baltimore 287
1/6/2013 Columbus 325
2/10/2013 Edison 279
2/17/2013 Cincinnati 279
3/10/2013 Indianapolis 326
And Legacy Worlds last year had 350, and that's with the added cost/complexity of GenCon. Considering the density of Legacy players in the NE, and the removed added cost of GenCon, I could easily see this event hit 410.
Additionally, this is two weeks ahead of GP DC, also in Legacy format. So I wouldn't be surprised to see higher turnout just on riding the coattails of the Grand Prix. I imagine this would be a preview tournament to the larger event.

Hopefully the hotel deals are pretty good, going to be tough to budget for this and GP DC in the same month.

To any and all Legacy players attending: Get some Powered Up lists together and stay to battle on Sunday! We (as in, the Vintage Players) would love seeing you guys there, no question.
Seconded on Play Mat prizes - but whatever else the prize structure of a Coss tournament is, it's pretty much always insane.

Anybody have any idea how much you might get for the giant piece of cardboard on Ebay?

This post makes me very very sad. When I first got into Legacy I was dismayed to hear that the entire population is obsessed with absurdly high prize structures, rivaling Grand Prix (at the time a Legacy GP was unheard of) or Pro Tours for dollar-per-entry values.
I am thankful to know many years later that the percentage of players who maintain this philosophy are low in population, those that stick around in the format are even less, those with this mentallity that actually perform well at events are extremely minimal.
I for one am enthusiastic that Worlds has moved closer to me, where before it was outside my reach. The idea of playing for the ultimate swag doesn't translate directly into dollars for me. I revel in the idea that the 1st place prize in the formats are a token/art piece rather than an easily-liquidatable asset. I will bring as many as I can, and look forward to the event.

These prizes suck gigantic balls. No seriously, it's not even cash to be able to compensate travelling to shitty ass Philadelphia for a GP-esque MTG tournament in mid-fall.
Really glad I couldn't attend this tournament. Now I'm sure to not go in store credit is the only prize offered.
Enjoy the run on "huge singles inventory, MTG sealed product and even accessories". The store doesn't even have a single Zendikar fetchland. Only two Vendilion clique in stock (foil MMA); Force of Will are not even listed on the website.
No thank you.

Hahahahahaha ... 40 bucks reg. fee and the winner gets only the oversized A.Recall which was already the price a few years before? Dunno if you can sell those for serious cash.
"1800$ store Credit for 2nd! Come and enjoy our hilarious expensive but limited inventory!" I had such tourneys twice ... no thanks. I don't want to be forced to pick Theros-Boxes for 200$ each or such crap

Are those trophy's made of gold? 1st place gets 0 monopoly money credits...
also, if you win the vintage champs, its unlikely that you need $1,500 more in cards...it would seem that you have already spent the money needed
Legacy
1st: The winner receives an alternate-art, framed Wasteland trophy. <--- $0 is that right?
2nd: $1800
3rd-4th: $900
5th-8th: $400
9th-16th: $200
17th-32nd: $100
33rd-64h: $50
Vintage
1st: The winner receives an alternate-art, framed Ancestral Recall trophy. <--- $0 is that right?
2nd: $1500
3rd-4th: $750
5th-8th: $300
9th-16th: $150
17th-32nd: $100
33rd-64h: $50
ha, since it sounds like no one will be attending I may go just for an easy top 8...then throw the finals match to get second...

i took a look at the store inventory. It would appear that players attending are likely to have better inventories than the store hosting. Maybe you could offer part ownership of your store as prize support?

Um ... there's nothing for sale on that site before 8th or Darksteel. Like ... not even a revised Badlands? What exactly is any eternal player going to spend $1500 on? This is pretty terrible news. Dan Frazier is good news I guess, pretty solid artist lineup.

So apparently they do have power and duals, they just have not posted what they have yet.
mishima_kazuya
09-14-2013, 07:35 PM
I was there a few weeks ago before I moved to New Brunswick. The store had several of each dual in the display case, along with several force of wills, along with several Dark Confidants, along with some power, along with some BB Time Vaults, Candelabras, etc.
As you can guess, it just means a lot of their inventory is not on their website (which means I get to snag some sweet foreign stuff that's not listed by raiding their foreign singles boxes).
The Convention Center is next to Reading Market (making Philly one of the MTG places with the best food). If you fancy sight seeing trying, we got Independence Hall, The Art Museum, South Street among many things.
I'm not sure about hotel prices, but it might be cheaper to get a hotel in New Jersey that is located near a PATCO train stop. For example; if you get a hotel near the Collingswood Station, you are a 10 minute train ride and a 10 minute walk from the Convention Center (tickets are about $2-$3 one way). Or you could carpool (its $5 to cross from New Jersey in Philly and free to cross from Philly to Jersey). There is nice parking lot that is only $10-$12 all day over on 8th Street and Market Street.

Yeah, there is a killer noodles and dim sum place right down the street. The convention center is very close to Chinatown

That's great but I'd imagine 75% of tge participants will be from out of town. Also, its a one dealer thing so if they want they can charge absurd prices. Just seems bad all around for participants. Just specifying cards ala BoM is more reasonable than somestorebucks.

Organizer has posted some pics of some of the inventory. So that's a big plus. My only concern now would be with just one vendor arbitrarily pricing everything like shit; but at least there are actual eternal staples pictured there.
I think many people are going to be choosing between Eternal Weekend and GP Washington D.C. so I think it's important for the EW organizer(s) to really get out ahead of this with lots of information. The GP lacks Vintage but it's very clear about it's structure and pay out, in addition it will host multiple vendors.

I can assure everyone the people running the event have a huge selection of cards for every format. They run many Vintage and Legacy events at their store and are always well received. I know they are still working on their online site and just like with my stores site they are working from the most current back. I have done business with them many times and I have always been happy with their pricing and card selection.
I do agree the 1st place prizes are lacking unless those cards sell for big bucks but I can not find anything to suggest it. I personally would throw the finals to take second place.

For anyone complaining about first place prize, just look at precedent. Very few champs winners seem to have sold their paintings, and those that did were able to sell them for several thousand dollars. The Vintage Champs Timetwister painting is on ebay now for like $7k.

While it may be true that previous winners have sold their stuff, showing us an unsold prize doesn't support your argument very much. I've got a jar of feces currently for sale on eBay for a hundred grand, but that doesn't mean it's worth that.
Does anyone have actual prices for these things being sold?

I don't have concrete data, just relaying the word on the streets. We can look at this from another angle though. Considering that original art for sale on SCG's website used to number in the dozens to hundreds and now is four pieces, some of which were sold for a couple thousand apiece, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that very high-profile paintings of some of the most powerful cards in magic that have never seen print would attract high-end private collectors.
Compare references in these (http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/misc/20954_Essay_1_Collecting_Magic_Art.html) two (http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/misc/22204_Compulsive_Research_Collecting_Original_Magic_Illustrations.html) articles to what's currently available (http://sales.starcitygames.com/category.php?t=a&cat=1077).
It's not like you see ebay listings for much of the awesome stuff Occam posts, but we all know ballpark that it's a lot. Speaking of Occam...do you have an insider scoop on this that you'd be willing to share?

Hey guys,
I wanted to post to address a few of your concerns. As many of you have already noticed, the Eternal Weekend site has been updated with current information regarding the hotel block, prizes, artist, and vendors.
1) This year's Legacy and Vintage Champs, as the prizes stand, will be the largest prize pool ever offered at these tournaments BY FAR. Champs have never been a cash payout tournament, and as much as I'd love to offer cash payouts, it isn't financially feasible at this time. Regarding generic store credit as a tournament prize; I have found that players prefer to win things that they actually need, instead of "4x Tropical Island" or a similar prize, they instead get to choose cards that they need, without any sort of penalty. The first concern was that we don't have a good selection of Legacy and Vintage staples, which is totally understandable, since www.cardtitan.com doesn't show everything that we have available. The second concern being pricing. Ask anyone who has dealt with myself or my store; it is not worth our reputation to gouge on pricing for a few thousand dollars extra profit. Everything we have available is always competitively priced.
2) Vendors. We have four vendors (including us) who have confirmed and paid for space at this event. We are looking for more! If you know of a vendor who you'd like to see at the Eternal Weekend, have them contact me and I'll be happy to forward all information regarding vendor spaces to them.
3) The first place prizes. Many of these paintings have sold to private collectors (not through ebay) for several thousand dollars ($3-$5k). These iconic pieces are an amazing collector's item, and if you were inclined to sell them, you will be able to without much difficulty.
Hopefully this addresses many of your concerns about the Eternal Weekend; it will be an event that you won't want to miss.

Nick, thanks for putting together Eternal Weekend. I am looking forward to attending first legacy/vintage champs and was thrilled to see prize payout. Also, the artists you scheduled are stellar, I'll be able to get something like 1/4 of my vintage deck signed. :D I've heard people say you're a top notch tournament organizer and I see why. Just a friendly reminder that Eternal Weekend is only one week away. Do you want to be the official Legacy Champion? Then Philadelphia is the place to be this Saturday. Still a few playmats left for people who pre-register!
Also, don't forget there are tons of side events, in addition to the big PTQ. Old set drafts, 8-mans for all kinds of formats, two Modern Masters 64-man drafts, and more. Hope to see you there!

Just because there are bars around the convention center doesn't mean that's the best the city has to offer. For the beer crowd, I strongly recommend the website www.phillytapfinder.com.
I'd be more than happy to recommend an establishment for the mood you are seeking. That said, the most famous beer bar in Philly is Monk's. I am not a fan, pretentious staff. Comparable alternative - Eulogy.
For the wine crowd... Tria is pretty good, and I can prolly think of a few others if I had to.

I'd be remiss if I gave the impression that wine is a good alcoholic beverage. That said, there are a few good whiskey places as well, Cooperage, Percy Street BBQ, & Village Whiskey. I'd say Percy Street BBQ is best for American Whiskey and they have an excellent (the best) selection of craft cans beer. Village Whiskey is the priciest, with the best food.

For those of you who are coming in to Philly from NJ/NY on Sunday as well as Saturday, an important note: The Ben Franklin Bridge will be closed from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM for a 10k run. Plan alternate routes into Philly, either the Betsy Ross or the Walt Whitman bridges.
Also, Daylight Savings Time ends 2:00 AM Sunday. Set your clocks/watches appropriately. I assume those of you who use your smart phones as alarm clocks will have that done for you automatically. :-)

Where can we await the streaming to be done?
Greetings
It should be on Twitch and GGSLive.

Looking to borrow 3 flooded strands for tomorrow. Unfortunately I'm playing basics and not some ham sandwich I can just jam 9 blue fetches into. Hit me up via PM or @Feingersh on twitter, I can offer collateral for them and get them back to you as soon as the tournament is over.

Good event, well run. Enjoyed myself even if I went 6-3 in both events.

My only gripe was how crowded it was on Saturday the first couple rounds. Else really well done!

There was a time in my life I would have considered that a cramped couple of rounds on Saturday ... but at BoM I literally had my elbows in my neighbors kidneys whilst playing. I didn't stand in any line the whole weekend for more than 3 minutes. Even the artist room was a complete breeze. They also had a lounge with a projector running the stream. there were enough vendors that they had to be reasonable and competitive. Overall I think it was a pretty well run event.

Glad to hear you had a positive experience! We both enjoy Eternal formats a lot, so running this event well was something very important to us. Hopefully we'll see everyone again soon!

The staff at Monk's was pretentious? Maybe it was just an isolated bad experience? (if not, sorry to hear; that's a bummer, because their selection and food are both amazing.) I was only in for the day and didn't have time to go there this time, but I pretty much ALWAYS make it a point to hit Monk's and The Market when I'm in town. The staff at Monk's has been nothing but helpful with recommendations, at least for me, every time I've been there.

Wish I could've stayed for Sunday, but alas academic responsibilities called. Here's to doing this again next year!
