View Full Version : Help - how should I spend this $5,000?

We have some extra cash to put into my collection and was wondering what would be better.

Some beta moxen and another lotus (I have 2 sets of Beta (one beat to hell for my decks) and a set of unlimited)

or

1-2% of the Alpha, Beta, Unlimited and collectors edition Icy's Print run many graded and signed for my Icy collection (from various online stores)

Or more duals (I have a couple playsets no revised anymore)

or $5k into other legacy staples so that the play group has more options for decks (atm I have a single set of LED's so if one person has them in a deck no one else has any to use.)

I am really leaning towards the Icy's but the others are better then bonds for long term cash holding and I can actually play with them and are easy to sell and get my money back.

'Round here, we use descriptive thread titles. Edited - HiVal

I have percs and marinol they are much better.

I think I may go with just a pile of non-modern staples and whatever graded/altered Icy's I can find. I do not really need any more duals or power

1) Invest in gold.
2) Bury it somewhere safe.
3) Vote for Ron Paul in order to divert Nibiru.
4) Be disappointed Ron Paul doesn't win the race.
5) Wait for Nibiru.
6) Don't ask for advice from random internet people.

Just buy 40 bottles of this and thank me later. Seriously Zacapa is the best thing money can buy.

Edit: Sorry the Etiqueta Negra (black label) is only for the european market, but you can still buy the normal 23 years one.

Buy 20 bottles of it, spend the rest on strippers, and thank me now instead of later.

Foil jaces

I do not find any non-reserved list card worth spending that much on. i own a single playset and a couple people int he group have 1 or 2 but we had a single foil and I sold that shit as fast as possible. Waiting on the dual deck of Jace, tms vs Lilliana of the veil. That is something I would pick up a whole case of.

Ideally, you would want a low-cost, high-yield product. Something like, oh IDK Deathrite Shaman for instance. The difficulty is getting it to increase in value and then resell at the higher stock.

Want to know what the next mythic that will skyrocket? $5K will tell you.

I don't think this thread was created for advice so much as to display an ability to buy superfluous garbage.

Oh, another thing you could invest in is hordes of small children, keep them in dog cages in your basement, and collect disability on them. That's a real moneymaker, I hear.

I don't spend what we can't afford. I did kinda piss the wife off buying some beat beta power earlier this year but the deal was too good to pass up
We have almost no debt, I think right now its just my Amex but I pay it off at least once every 3 months. We also keep at least 2 years pay in savings just in case of a worst case scenario like if my business burnt down or she lost her job. I have also pulled money from savings to buy collections :)

It's some cash left from moving from a one investment to a more diverse investment strategy and we (my wife and I) figured, may as well invest in something we will actually use as well. Like my wife said even if they lost all value I still will have my $5k in fun with it.

i think the current plan is just going over a bunch of decklist and see what we have and what we need to have the max number of decks available to play at the same time. I would love to be able to just grab any of the top 10 decks for each format and play it right out of the box. Currently we have 3 vintage, 6 legacy and about 15 modern decks. Nothing Standard since I dont play enough to keep them up to date.

Where can one go next if he/she already has 2 sets of Beta Power? Nothing like Alpha Power for the truly refined connoisseur.
$5k may not get you all the way there though.

The original print would still hold it's value, and the duel dekcs typically have some weird jacked up picture. I can see your reasoning behind not investing in anything non reserve list but they've doubled in value since the beginning of the year and its unlikely to be reprinted in any standard legal set. I could see a judge foil coming out and maybe it would be old border/new pic but they wouldnt drop the value of the original ones.

reprints dont destroy the value of the cards unless it happens many many times over.... such as birds of paradise/pithing needle.

However you can look at something like foil crucible of worlds, that got a reprint in 10th after fifth dawn, and then a judge foil was recently released. the judge foil is about the same price as the others and they are all hovering $80

so reprinting in moderation seems to be ok as long as it doesnt saturate the market. I dont feel like it would be possible to saturate the market with one of the best cards in legacy...

A liliana vs jace would be unbalanced as a duel deck, and duel decks are typically more "fun". new players dont like to discard their own cards (liliana). or have to fight over the better deck...jace.

I dont have everything my goal eventually is to have 4x of every set printed and at least 10% of every Douglas Shular Icy printed.

Well, better put that $5k in a high risk/high reward investment so you can work on your 4x Summer set :P

Personally, I'd purchase playsets of any legacy staple I might need, regardless of whether they could be reprinted. If I had any left over, I'd pick up vintage staples I don't have.

Didn't think about Edgar. let's make that 4x of every standard issue set. I have only purchased one pack ever and it was years ago from toad and toad for somehting like $400. Only thing I kept from the pack was an Ankh of Mishra (I love Amy Weber) and dark ritual. Sold the rest to a friend for relatively cheap prices dont even remember what was there in the pack

I think I prefer magic as an investment, you don't have to feed cardboard... Although I spose if you buy enough they can just feed on each other?

Cardboard is high in fiber. Part of a healthy diet. 9th Edition bulk commons are good for something afterall.

Where the hell would i fit $5000 in bulk commons, I think the weight alone would cause a sinkhole.

Figure they run about $3 per 1000 or so shipped. That would be a little over 1.5 million cards...would be cool to do a floor in a game room with all magic backs though.

its about 2700 KG in weight LMAO
