Hi! In the future, please be aware that proper capitalization and punctuation are required when posting on these boards. Also, when starting a new thread about a deck, we ask that you post more than just a decklist. It will help other posters if you explain some of your card choices, matchups, difficulties you're having with the deck, etc. Thanks. -zilla

I actually tried exactly this for a short while before deciding something that should be fairly obvious: Empty the Warrens is better.

1) It makes twice as many guys per spell.

2) It can be cast at the end of a chain of spells that search for it, rather than having to be the first thing you cast on a combo turn to do well.

3) The number of decks that can interact positively with Pyromancer is much larger than the number that can interact positively with EtW.

Add all of that together and I could pretty much take any deck where you're playing Pyromancer, slot in EtW in that slot, and it would be better.

I agree with HPB_Eggo on all three of those points. Pyromancer seems fine as a sideboard card to allow you to slow roll game 2 since your opponent is likely to side out their removal if all they see is EtW. You'll make less dudes, but it'll be easier to play around hate and not force you to go all-in.

You never know if your opponent is going to prepare for Xantid Swarm.. and against Thresh, they don't even need to remove their x8 burn spells. I'd say its fairly risky since you can respond with removal on your kill.

Just ran a few games with your list to confirm, and I can say pretty straightforward that Pyromancer is still not a good combo card. My list didn't work, your list didn't work, and neither will any other list because Pyromancer isn't a win condition for combo, it's an engine to out-tempo or out-grind your opponent, neither of which are something combo wants to have to be doing.

If you really want the deck to work I think you might just want to go mono-red and move slightly away from the combo aspect. Tons of basics open you up to running Blood Moon, and you can still play Reforge the Soul, Faithless Looting, and Past in Flames to go absolutely silly with Pyromancer later on in the game. Could even be a decent shell for the new Chandra, although that's probably pushing things too far. :tongue:

Untested:

// Creatures: 4
4 Young Pyromancer

// Draw: 16
4 Brainstorm
4 Gitaxian Probe
4 Ponder
4 Preordane

// Ramp: 21
4 Lotus Petal
4 Rite of Flame
4 Desperate Ritual
4 Pyretic Ritual
1 Seething Song
4 Manamorphose

// Kill: 4
2 Past in Flames
2 Grapeshot

// Lands: 15
4 Island
1 Mountain
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Volcanic Island

Bushwacker seems weak. I get where you're going; I don't like it.

This is basically playing UR Modern Storm, but throwing in the cards that got banned and some Petals and Volcs. Pyroman should be used so that you can just get a value turn, and to make your fizzles never fizzle. Random 1/1's are great, but you do really want to be 'Shotting people. I do feel as if I am just missing some Wishes here, so I'd like to get some in somewhere. Possibly cutting a Grapeshot and a couple of draw Spells (a Brainstorm and a Probe?) to make it work? I'm using a relatively low amount of shuffle effects, so 'Storm may not be stellar here, but Ponder/Brainstorm is quite the team-up, so maybe just a pair of Probes.

The benefits of Empty the Warrens over Young Pyromancer are well stated. The benefit of Pyromancer over Empty is that you don't have to "go for it". You both need a lot of mana and a lot of storm to make Empty the Warrens worth it; you probably wouldn't want to to fire off an Empty for just 4 or 6 tokens. That's totally fine with Pyromancer; you would just make another 3 or 4 tokens the next turn.

It's fine in a deck that isn't an all-in combo deck. Perhaps if you could find a way to consistently get 4-5 spells off every turn after landing Pyromancer, but I seriously doubt a built that could manage that even exists. Interesting thought, though.
