You're going to a 1k or a 5k tournament. Would you rather the prize be in store credit, or cash? And if you don't mind answering this: Which one and why?
Personally, I'd choose cash. Because there's nothing like coming home and showing your SO or parents or roommates or whoever that sometimes MtG really can pay for itself :D

All amounts being the same, nothing beats cash, hands down.
Now if it was like, get 1.5x the value in store credit, sure. If they're the same, no one would ever choose credit over cash.

As long has or can order things I want I'm fine either way.
Cash is King.
Anything over $50 prizes I'll be more inclined for cash. Under that is a bit of a hassle; so I'm ok with store credit.

If credit is like a decent amount higher I may rather do that. But if it's close there is no reason to not take cash

Always cash. And % payouts should be 85+ always IMO

It depends if it is cash=store credit then always cash
but if its cash or 125% or ^ store credit depends what they have in stock most of the time though I take the store credit when its better because I can flip product and get more than the original cash prize.

If they're equal amounts of each, I want cash. Things like travel costs can be mitigated that way. I think a 1k+ event usually requires travel for many, so going with cash will help draw more people in to make it profitable.
If they're giving that much in credit, they'd better have the stock and order capability to handle it from my home. Star City or the like could handle doing this, where something like Warriors 3 (great local store near me) couldn't do this.

I like store credit. Simple. Easy. No W9's.

This. If you are giving out store credit for a legacy event, please have legacy stock. I did not come to play in a legacy tournament to get a playset of shitty standard cards. Id probably just buy a pile of Deathrite shamans and snapcaster mages at that point.

legally you are suppose to report anything you receive as compensation, either cash or other tangible items. Bad thing is you pay these prices at whatever is the full MSRP or retail value of the item.

I know the articl is about a game show but it works for any winnings or alternate payments, the IRS considers it all "income"
