So, I got my girlfriend into the game and she loves it. To get her into the game, we bought a few sorin v. tibalt decks, and I made some changes with those cards as well as a few treats from my collection (fetches, duals) to make the game more fun as well as challenging and less frustrating (You know how these dumb pre-cons are, one of this, one of that, two of this crappy thing, etc.), and after a couple sessions and discussion on what she liked and didn't like, we have arrived at this list:

Land: 21
3 Scrubland
3 Tainted Field
2 Windswept Heath
2 Verdant Catacombs
3 Marsh Flats
5 Swamp
3 Plains

Creatures: 14
1 Deathrite Shaman (I like it, she doesn't know yet.)
1 Typhoid Rats (She likes it, I don't)
2 Vampire Hexmage (opposing Jitte, PW'ers along with first strike)
2 Gatekeeper of Malakir (great against my Geists)
4 Stoneforge Mystic
4 Vampire Nighthawk (stands in front of a geist and lives to brag about it; also, it's damn good.)

Spells:
1 Elspeth, Knight Errant (She wants another, I think it would be good as well)
3 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
3 Lingering Souls
1 Alter's Reap
1 Sign in Blood
2 Duress
2 Inquisition of Kozilek
1 Disenchant
2 Vindicate
4 Swords to Plowshares
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Batterskull
3 Sensei's Divining Top

That's the list and please keep in mind that it is in fact for a new player, intricate game-states are not what I am going for. Its a simple "lets make an army" deck that maintains board position while trying to win quickly. It is quite scary sometimes. Black has access to some pretty expensive cards, and I am trying to stay away from that big price tag.

At this point, the sideboard is irrelevant, therefore I have not posted it and do not really feel like it needs any attention right now.

Reasonings:

DRShaman: I think 3, even 4. She doesn't know for sure and is "playtesting" it. I have tried explaining that playtesting should be done with multiples, and probably 4 to truly see how it will affect the build, but 1 is all I could get her to "test".

Elspeth: I think 2 would be fine, especially since it gets countered so often by me. I just don't know where to put it, unless I drop a Lingering Souls for it.

Anyway, if you would put in $0.02 about it, as long as it's got good intentions behind it, I'll appreciate the feedback and any changes offered.

Check out this list from SCGO Atlanta, placed 9th. I think it's where you want to go.

-1 Typhoid Rats
-2 Vampire Hexmage (only good if you play Dark Depths)
-1 Altar's Reap
-1 Sign in Blood
-1 Disenchant (more of a sideboard card)

+3 Deathrite Shaman
+1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
+2 Discard spells (Cabal Therapy would be best, but since she is new probably just 2 Inquisition or 1 Inquisition 1 Duress)

You also may want to drop one Sorin (high mana curve) for another Lingering Souls. Bitterblossom is another card that would be good here if you own them. The 4th Lingering Souls might be better than another discard spell in my suggestions, not sure.

I am assume this is intended to be a casual deck that can compete as opposed to a 100% competitive deck. So I will suggest cards that are good, but that she might also like.

main ones I would remove:
-1 Typhoid Rats: bad
-2 Vampire Hexmage: meh
-1 Alter's Reap: bad
-1 disenchant: sideboard

If she likes the effect of disenchant, I would consider adding an extra vindicate instead.

creatures:
mother of runes
tidehollow sculler
deathrite shaman
dark confidant
shriekmaw (pet card of mine)
stillmoon cavalier (if she REALLY hates your geists :P Also she will probably appreciate that it is immune to sotp)

removal/discard:
chainer's edict
hymn to tourach
thoughtseize

lands:
1 urborg, tomb of yawgmoth
1 volrath's stronghold

others:
animate dead (this might look weird, but its actually pretty good/fun if you are mostly playing against creature decks. After a few turns, you usually have tons of options in either graveyard. Also its sweet with shriekmaw -> evoke, animate)
unearth
bitterblossom
phyrexian arena
liliana of the veil
