View Full Version : What are your FAVOURITE cards?

Not necessarily the most powerful (although they can be), but the ones you like the most because of various factors like nostalgia, coolness, etc. Let's say name 8.

I got into MtG when I was 8 or 9 years old, and it was around the time 4th edition came out. Some of my all time favourites (and some of the the ones I remember wanting the most back then) include...

Sol Ring
Mahamoti Djinn
Force of Will
Kjeldoran Outpost
Mishra's Factory
Swords to Plowshares
Balance
Wrath of God

Some of these suck by today's standards. I gotta find some friends who want to play anti-Modern (only cards with the old border!).

Lingering Souls, and Stoneforge Mystic. Bitterblossom is also sweet. BW Stoneblade is probably my favourite deck ever conceived, even if it is generally worse than most other variants.

I'm also a huge fan of Venser, especially with Karakas. That deck is too sweet.

This is so true. I'd love if our former casual group would form again. It'll be lovely to play with the good old cards with the good old frames.

Let's say name 8.

Armageddon
Balance
Swords to Plowshares

Erhnam Djinn
Maro
Mystic Enforcer
Terravore

Sol Ring
Sylvan Library

Nine cards. I know... After all, this was meant as a Budget Power Nine, am I right?

Final Fortune has always been my favourite. Always liked the all-or-nothing feel of it.

Close second is Adarkar Wastes but that's just because of the John Avon artwork.

SaberTooth
08-15-2013, 12:36 PM
Dark ritual and nishoba sabertooth

Mewens
08-15-2013, 01:01 PM
Argothian Enchantress
Essence of the Wild
Gifts Ungiven
Intuition
Meddling Mage
Primordial Hydra (I know, I know)
Repercussion
Young Pyromancer

I'm sure some of those choices are influenced by my latest goofy Legacy build (I'm playing around with a Young Pyromancer deck at the moment. It's a ton of fun, but just folds to DRS, RIP and Scavenging Ooze. Well positioned, I know), but as I sat down and thought about what cards make me smile to play them, that's the list I came up with.

I apparently like difficult-to-interact-with engine cards and smug shenanigans. And being blown out by graveyard hate.

08-15-2013, 01:23 PM
Gush
Jace, The Mind Sculptor
Lightning Bolt

*The Yawgmoth-Twins are good too: Bargain and Will.

Old:

Mana Drain -- adding insult to injury since 1994. My favorite ramp card.

New:

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas -- I just love this card. Love the artwork, love the abilities. I haven't been able to bring myself to get rid of my playset, even though it's just sitting in my binder right now. That does it, I'm building a casual deck with Tezz when I get home from work...

Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Vedalken Shackles
Maze of Ith

Wild Mongrel
Phantom Centaur
Battle Screech
Glory
Anurid Brushhopper
Arrogant Wurm
Steward of Valeron
Talisman of Impulse
Exalted Angel
Diligent Farmhand
Muscle Burst
Broodstar
Knight of the Holy Nimbus
Laquatus's Champion
Forbid
Quiet Speculation
Murmuring Bosk

In particular, things on this list that are 'cycles' or in a theme, like the Talismans, Phantom creatures or the Diligent Farmhand + Muscle Burst things. Murmuring Bosk is more of an honorable mention; they need to print more lands just like that only without the stupid tribal restriction, for those of us in the cheap seats.

This may not be a list of favorites, it's more like a list of "why-the-fuck-are-you-just-not-playable"s. But COME ON, Battle Screech is the JOINT. SO MANY FLYERS

Random card I worshipped back in school:

I had a deck with that, which used 4 ghazban ogres and 4 of the 2/1 equivalent with cycling (I forget the name). The theory was that either the game went ok and I'd kill them with my weenies, or he'd be winning, I'd lose my ogres, but then the defense of the heart would trigger and fetch me two thorn elementals (which was a chase rare when it came out). it wasn't my best deck, but it was very fun to play with.

Dark Confidant - I love aggressive value creatures that can go into a myriad of decks. Having bob active for a few turns is usually enough to win a game, but it never feels like a complete beating.
Life from the Loam - Well designed card advantage engine, that encourages outside the box thinking in deckbuidling.
Falkenrath Aristocrat - I like 4 drops with haste that are hard to remove.
Giant Solifuge - Same as above
Inquisition of Kozilek - Well designed hand disruption for formats like Block Constructed or Standard. Its versatile to maindeck, but not too narrow like Appetite for Brains or Duress.
Loxodon Hierarch - The original Thragtusk that started the modern midrange creature design.
Char - Eot Char, untap Char
Fact or Fiction - Probably more powerful back when creatures were more vanilla, but a very fun card to cast and challenging to play against. I think blue could use a good 4 drop that can compete with modern creatures that have all sorts of abilities, like Huntmaster of the Fells or Restoration Angel.

I look like an Azorius/Esper Fanboy here, but I like other cards too, like Nimble Mongoose (I have a misprint that my brother gave me some 12 years ago that I still use), Archaeomancer (such a small and humble creature, but very powerful in EDH), Pernicious Deed, etc. etc. If I had to pick 8, it'd be the 8 above that comes to mind first.

Ha! Do I smell a casual combo!?

I love Stampeding Wildebeests. Amazing illustration, pretty nice concept. I played a deck with them and Multani's Acolyte plus Wall of Roots back then in my early 20's. I can't believe no one has yet named Spiritmonger! That guy's a beast (literally).

I also have a problem with Grizzly Fate. I'm 6-3 over the last three weeks playing GBu Nic Fit with Grizzly Fate as the win condition (instead of, well, good cards).

Oh, Troll Ascetic also, preferably wearing an Armadillo Cloak, but a Rancor will work too.

It's fun to watch opponents' life totals go 20-12-X. I picked up four foil 7th Edition Grizzly bears and four Beta Grizzly Bears to turn sideways. My friends have started picking up foil Grizzly Fates to give me. In a deck full of fetchlands, Brainstorms, Ponders, Veteran Explorers, and Deeds, hitting Threshold hasn't been too tricky.

This. All of my favorite cards either were played in Madness (my first real deck) or were opened by me in Invasion block boosters, back when I was learning to play and every card was a completely new card to me.

This is a gentleman's deck right here. I fully endorse this approach to Magic the Cards.

I can't believe no one has yet named Spiritmonger! That guy's a beast (literally).

I was just thinking about this guy. In a lot of ways this creature was ahead of its time - think about the current state of creatures in Magic and then look back at Spiritmonger:

6/6 for 5cmc with no drawback
3 abilities - one for resilience (regen), one gets around dumb protection (color choice), and one to grow him and keep him relevant in the event he ends up outclassed by something dumb like Goyf or KotR (+1 counters)

Compare it to, like, Reaper of the Wilds from Theros. Or do a Gatherer search for Modern-legal creatures in BG. He compares pretty well. I don't think time has slowed down Spiritmonger one bit. Maybe his casting cost is a little prohibitive, and maybe it's just better to like resolve S&T or something and poop an Eldrazi into play, but man if I were going to build a BG list tomorrow you can bet that at the least it would like live on my Living Wish board, or something. Something. Spiritmonger freaking rules.

I think I said this already, but the Phantom cycle from Judgment has always been a favorite of mine. I want to equip a Batterskull to Phantom Centaur and tell every aggro-control player what to go do with themselves.

I'm glad you like my "Madness in the Zoo Park" theme deck. :-)
On Spiritmonger: Yep, this one is pretty powerful. Shame that the other options available like Thragtusk (or however it's called), S&T->Emmy, and of course Goyfs, Goyfs, Goyfs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiuHdUkuRi0) completely rotated Monger out of format.

I liked the phantom dudes. I played Phantom Centaur with Armadillo Cloak in Ext. In fact I played anything possible with Armadillo Cloak, be it Soltari Priest, Troll Ascetic or even Exalted Angel. It was brilliant. RDW and BDW pilots simply LOVED to play against me. (Tbh, sometimes they were fast enough, also timely played FotBH helped them quite a lot.)
I'm not sure if I ever Cloaked my Eternal Dragon, though. But lets pretend that this also happened...

The cards I like most are the ones I played during my journey through the years of magic. I'll just fire out an order and try to cut it down to the top 10.

Dark Ritual:
A no-brainer. This was the Black Lotus of my youth. Reprinted enough to make it cheap and black was the most fun anyway. To this day I love casting this card. Skulls everywhere :D

Kird Ape:
"Pressure" is what this card should have as a flavour text. With my first playset of Duals being Taiga no wonder i like this little monkey so much. Paired with Rancor and Gianth Growth makes it quite the beast. I'm a big fan of Arabian Nights which makes it my favorite creature of all time! Goyf who?

Necropotence:
This is the one card changing magic for me. It shows you how much power you generate by drawing cards. It also has some cool skulls printed on it. The suicidal taste makes it even more lovable.

Force of Will:
When you have discovered what incredible hings you can do in the early turns to win the game you automatically think about ways to deny it. This Card does it all. Simply put the purest element of control in my opinion.

Rogue Elefant:
You may have noticed that I love agressive plays. Yep, I do. Going to extra turns was never my thing. I wanna be able to play a game of magic in 10 minutes.

River Boa:
The trio of creatures is complete. These were my beloved ones back in 2005. R/G Beats (if some remember) was my thing. Not overthinking, but somewhat challenging. I obviously changed my view and figured creatures are a little boring. I still remember the jungle thingies smacking some serious face. Times, good old times.

Oath of Druids:
Yeah, I love this card. 1G for a big, fat creature. Seems fair. It was just so much fun tuning different decklists for weeks. For me losing felt okay. As long as I resolved an Oath. True story. Unfortunately games were boring at times and winning felt like no effort, losing felt like there was nothing you could do. Similar to modern Show and Tell decks. Although we are talking about the difference on Vintage and Legacy.

That's it.

I've been searching for a sorcery that makes a win condition for my Loam deck to try out... DOING IT!

Also some of my favorites are: Life from the Loam (insane CA engine when undisrupted), Pernicious Deed (awesome board wipe), Green Sun's Zenith (Tutor and put into play for 1 more mana? Busted), Burning Wish (Red Demonic Tutor is pretty decent), Grim Lavamancer (I just like shocking things repeatedly) , and Cabal Therapy (the feeling of blind hitting with this is awesome).

I absolutely love Life from the Loam and am always sad that it's not very good in Legacy any more. In fact when Modern was announced the thing I was most excited about was having a format where I thought decks like Loam.dec were going to be fun and reasonably competitive. (cue wah-wah sound).

I also adore Knight of the Reliquary. He's the epitome of what a good creature should be in my eyes. He isn't a mindless ETB value explosion; he actually has to, wow this is craaazy, stick around for a turn to do stuff. He has a tension between his tap ability and attacking. Yet he's powerful and rewarding and you can do lots of different things with him.

Why is there no Fire Covenant deck?

It's played in the sideboard of BUrg Thresh. Not a Fire Covenant deck per se, but I didn't even know the card existed until it popped up there. It seems pretty good with Death's Shadow type cards, although that's probably a little on the cute side to be honest.

Why is there no Fire Covenant deck?

I think it doesn't stack up well compared to other Pyroclasm-like effects, and most of those don't get played, and you would have difficulty casting this spell if you were behind. And it doesn't hit players for obvious reasons, unless you're playing with Repercussion of course. :)

I mean most Pyroclasm-like effects aren't asymmetrical and can't kill Goyfs realistically.

The reason it doesn't see more play is because decks with badlands are rarely viable and people don't know it's good. I had to pull some teeth to get it included in my friend's Cube list.
