View Full Version : Infinity [New Legacy Deck in Progress]

Ok, this deck is really unique. I can't think of any legacy decks that use "Banefire" or "Blaze" as their kill factor. This deck may not be perfect yet, but I have been testing it on Magic Work Station and it's been winning a lot of games. It's called "Infinity", and the theme of the deck is to get infinite mana, to burn your opponent for 20 billion damage with Banefire.
What do you think..?

Why not Banefire over Blaze?

Yeah I just fixed that now. Is playing with both Banefire AND Blaze, too much? (Not 4 of each, but maybe 4 Banefire and 2 Blaze..?)

You can't have more than 4 of each card which is a non basic land, including Great Furnace and Vault of Whispers.
Moreover, you don't have anything to make an infinite mana pool.
8 Vault and 12 Great Furnace? That's not even legal.
Voltaic Construct seems worse than Staff of Domination in general, and Staff is more compact. Staff lets you draw your deck, so you can run only 1 burn spell that way, or a Blightsteel and some number of Lightning Greaves.

Oh yeah, I'll fix the lands. But, however, I do.

Missed the Metalworker. Indeed, Staff of Domination is better than Voltaic construct. And you need things to protect your metalworker.

What do I use to protect it..? I have other creatures, but I don't have anyway to protect it incase it gets Swords to Plowshares or Lightning Bolted..

Kaervek's Torch is strictly better than Blaze.
Lightning Greaves is generally how MUD decks try to protect their Metalworkers.

Here's a list I'll try out:
Land (23):
4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
4 Great Furnace
4 Vault of Whispers
5 Swamp
2 Mountain
Robots (20):
4 Ornithopter
4 Memnite
4 Metalworker
4 Phyrexian Construct
2 Wurmcoil Engine
2 Spellskite
Gubbinz(17):
4 Staff of Domination
4 Mox Opal
4 Duress
4 Banefire
1 Ghitu Fire
The main reason you play fewer artilands is because you want to accelerate into a fast Worker+Staff. I almost considered dropping the black and going for a Blue splash, then you could add in Thoughtcast and either Master of Etherium or Vedalken Archmage.

Another option instead of Banefire is Mishra's Factory. Once you go off, just tap down their creatures and use staff to make the factory a 20/20. Chalice of the Void is also pretty good at protecting your Metalworkers.

What do you do if you don't have metalworker? Mulligan?
Here's how I would run the list.
Key components:
Metalworker + Staff (infinite mana)
Banefire (best X damage spell)
Sol Lands (faster Metalworker)
Lightning Greaves (protection + haste)
Chalice of the Void (shut down removal, slow down decks... you have no 1cc and you have sol lands so why not run Chalice?)
Blightsteel Colossus (alternate win condition if opponent has Leyline of Sanctity)
Serum Powder (this deck needs to mulligan into Metalworker. Also, this is an artifact!)
Spellskite (soaks up Abrupt Decay, artifact removal, etc.)
//26 mana
4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
4 Great Furnace
4 Seat of the Synod
2 Darksteel Citadel
3 Volcanic Island
1 Mox Opal
4 Grim Monolith
//16 business
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Trinisphere
4 Metalworker
4 Staff of Domination
//12 support
3 Lightning Greaves
2 Spellskite
3 Fabricate
4 Serum Powder
//6 win condition
2 Wurmcoil Engine
1 Blightsteel Colossus
1 Kuldotha Forgemaster
2 Banefire
This deck can theoretically turn 2 Goldfish:
Ancient Tomb/City of Traitors -> Lightning Greaves. Turn 2 land, Metalworker revealing 4+ artifacts -> Staff, untap Metalworker, infinite mana, draw deck, Mox Opal, Banefire
Ancient Tomb/City of Traitors -> Grim Monolith -> Metalworker. Turn 2 tap Metalworker revealing 3+ artifacts, Staff, untap Metalworker, infinite mana, etc..
Other lines of playing include dropping Chalice/3sphere on turn 1 and slowing the game down until you can assemble a win.
This is a bit rough, but that's the shell I would use. Your important spells all cost 3+ mana so why not play Sol Lands, Chalice and 3sphere? Since this is combo-oriented I prefer the tutoring of Fabricate to the card draw of Thirst for Knowledge or Thoughtcast.
Serum Powder seems great for mulliganing into Metalworker, and then it counts as an artifact later to boost Metalworker mana. Metalworker combo is probably the deck where that card sucks the least.
I cut down on copies of X damage burn since they are bad unless you have the combo online, and if you have the combo online then you can draw your deck anyway. The singleton Mox Opal lets you generate red mana on the combo turn if you already used your land drop. More copies of X burn might be good due to Serum Powder possibly exiling some... will need to test that out.
Blightsteel+Greaves is an alternate infinite mana win through Leyline of Sanctity.
Wurmcoil is a staller/alternate win if the combo doesn't come online. Greaves+Forgemaster into hasty Blightsteel is another win without infinite mana.
It may be that this build has too much support and not enough business. One card that may be fun to run is Lodestone Golem, maybe over the Serum Powder slot, doubling as an alternate win condition and disruption piece.
Greaves and Spellskite give you additional protection on top of whatever Chalice and 3sphere don't block.
Defense Grid seems good in the SB. Maybe Tangle Wire against aggro?
Thoughts?
EDIT: You probably also want some way to deal with Phyrexian Revoker/Pithing Needle on Metalworker or Staff. Maybe SB Rushing River or red artifact removal or something.

Yeah I like it man. I had made a second list and it is very similar to what you came up with. It's a pretty well constructed deck now :tongue:

Skill Borrower could be fun, though you really want topdeck tutors like Enlightened Tutor or a deck stacker like Sensei's Divining Top to really make her work.
Is Banefire really the best win condition for this deck? Counterspells can hit other stuff, and something like Stroke of Genius means you have an extra engine card, and you don't have to splash for :r:.

Alright, I made another list for the deck for fun. This deck obviously can vary in its list, but this is an option.

4 Metalworker
4 Voltaic Construct
4 Wurmcoil Engine

Mox Diamond is objectively wrong. You want Mox Opal.

Diamond lets you cast turn 1 Trinisphere/metalworker or chalice without a sol land, Opal doesn't.

...In a deck with 20 lands? Highly unlikely. I would test at the very least a 2/2 split, or move to a higher number of lands. 20 simply isn't enough in a midrange meta, where the top-tier noncombo decks all pack Wastes.

I've been thinking about playing with one or two Psychosis Crawlers for fun. It just seems like another immediate win factor for the deck, with staff of domination [Make opponent lose a lot of life by drawing, and even playing it with lightning greaves with enough cards in my hand to kill them]. Not sure how it would work though. Brightsteel Colossus is probably a better choice, but could it hurt to play with Brightsteel, and the crawler..?
