View Full Version : Would this be viable?

Hey. I'm new to this site and legacy in general but I want to get into the format. I had this idea about a budget deck, but I have no idea if it would be viable at all. I don't expect it to be top tier obviously, but if it will be so bad that there is no point trying then I want a warning before I get all the cards! Also, of course any ideas of improvements are very appreciated.
It's basically supposed to be an aggro-controllish RBG threshold deck.
3 Manamorphose
4 Gitaxian Probe
4 Night’s Whisper
4 Cabal Therapy
4 Duress
4 Nimble Mongoose
4 Spark Elemental
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Chain Lightning
3 Price of Progress
2 Fireblast
20 lands, including:
4 Barbarian Ring
Fetches and duals, basics...
Sideboard: No clue yet...
Edit: card tags don't seem to be working, I don't know how to fix it...

Cabal Therapy should probably be Thoughtseize. Barbarian Ring seems not so good. If you are running a lot of non-basics that aren't mountains Fireblast may need to go.
RUG Delver and Punishing Jund seem to be where you're at. Check out those threads for more help. You may get more feedback there since there will be more activity. I hope this helps. :)

I'd say replace the Duresses with Thoughtseize and keep the Therapies.
Hellspark Elemental is much better than Spark Elemental, especially with Cabal Therapy.
Maybe upgrade the Night's Whispers to Dark Confidants or Blood Scrivner?

I agree on blood scrivener for this deck.
You might consider Street Wraith and Tarmogoyf/Tombstalker in addition to Probe and Manamorphose for superfast t.hold/giant creatures
Faithless Looting might be a good way to fill up the GY faster and grow Goyfs/Mongeese. Good with cards you want to discard (e.g. Punishing Fire, Bloodghast, Life from the Loam, other Lootings, etc.)
Spark Elemental is pretty much strictly worse than Lava Spike. Both functionally accomplish the same thing, but one can't be blocked. Although Hellspark with Cabal Therapy is interesting.
Price of Progress seems like an awful idea in a 3-color deck with Barbarian Rings and self-life-loss draw cards. You will just kill yourself against any deck with a clock. You could probably cut down the number of Rings too. 2 is probably fine. Or 0.
How about playing Punishing Jundhold/Aggro LoamFire?
This is a random brew I just threw together but it lets you play Threshold+Discard+Burn with focus on the midgame (where threshold shines) with some decent beaters and card advantage engines as well as some early disruption to get you there.
//16 creatures:
4 Nimble Mongoose
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Dark Confidant
4 Countryside Crusher
//18 spells:
4 Faithless Looting
4 Thoughtseize
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Punishing Fire
3 Life from the Loam
//26 lands:
3 Grove of the Burnwillows
3 Tranquil Thicket
1 Barbarian Ring
3 Verdant Catacombs
3 Bloodstained Mire
2 Wooded Foothills
2 Bayou
2 Badlands
2 Taiga
1 Forest
1 Mountain
1 Swamp
1 Dust Bowl
1 Volrath's Stronghold
Pure Aggro Loam without the 1-drops and with Chalice of the Void and Mox Diamonds might be better, IDK, but the engine does help you fill up the yard for Mongoose/Goyf while giving you cards that are profitable to be in the GY and ways to get them back or generate advantages from them. Early disruption b/c otherwise DRS wrecks Loam and PFire.

I agree with thoughtseize over duress or cabal its getting reprinted in theros so it shouldn't be too hard to get 2-4

Thanks for the advice everyone! I really appreciate it.
Some changes I'm making:
-price of progress
-spark elemental
+hellspark elemental
+keldon marauders
About thoughtseize, to be honest I'm afraid the life loss will be too much with the probes, night's whisper, fetches and barbarian rings... I guess atleast I can try the deck with duresses and then evaluate.
About blood scrivener/dark confidant, I think they feel a bit slow, and also they die easily to removal. Another good thing with night's whisper is that it is a guaranteed +1 to threshold.
I think street wraith is an interesting card but I don't think it does enough to justify the 2 life loss. It's like a probe but lacks the synergy with cabal therapy.
EDIT: Also, about playing guys like tarmogoyf/tombstalker/countryside crusher, I feel like they are just going to let the opponent use all his removals, like "finally something I can remove!" *abrupt decay*, whereas if I played more burn instead he can just sit there with his dead cards.

If you want to avoid things that die to removal and play more burn, why don't you just play Burn? Like, what's the point of slowing yourself down to play Night's Whisper and Duress when you could just cast more burn spells and win?

You can't destory Tombstalker with abrupt decay. Street Wraith is just an option to fill your graveyard fast and without mana with the additional benefit of getting a creature into the graveyard for Tarmogoyf.
Obviously it's a decision between Goofy and Stalker.

The only way Blood scrivener can be considered over confidant is if you can trigger him several times in one turn. Otherwise, he is simply inferior.
