I know this is earlier by a couple weeks then we normally start sign ups but I have noticed people having issues when there is only a month to gather cards and ship so i decided it would be better to start earlier so everything can start to be shipped out by mid November.


Post if you are interested just PM me an address to add to the list. People will be pared based upon continent unless they are willing to ship international. Each person will have a number next to their name and I will use a random number generator to pair people up.
Rules:

it sucks but we have to have them.

This is for fun, no one is required to participate but we have had a ton of fun every year since at least '09

1.) We ask a min of $20 in Legacy playable or something from the person's wish list. You are not required to send more than that and don't feel pressured by package envy. (Wondering if this may need to be updated? Even 20 Zendikar full art lands meet this now days) I use Blacklotusproject.com for pricing, this way everyone is on an equal basis if we all use the same source.

2.) Try to ship in a timely manner, if not at least keep in communication.

3.) No spoilers (I know I am guilty of this since I love to brag about what I send)

4.) Try to keep your wishlist realistic if I get you and you have nothing but $100+ cards listed your getting a playset of STP and Dark rituals with a Random $10 Legacy rare and a Vizzerdrix.

I'd love to receive a playset of Stoneforge Mystic OR Swords to Plowshares OR Counterbalance. I obviously own those cards, but it would awesome if I'd receive some special version of them. This obviously does not mean japanese foil! I am happy with everything that isn't just plain normal. I'd really like them to be altered! Whether you do it on your own or comission someone you know / someone more professional is totally up to you! Well, this is my wish, though I am happy with anything creative too!

The wishlist contains stuff i d like to have, there are expensive cards along with very cheap ones, this way santa can pick what he can/wishes to send. It is intended as a guideline, i won t be disapointed if santa has a great idea and throws the list away.
i do not really care for foil or language. Native language is nice as these cards will be special.
I put the number of cards missing to complete my playset before the name of the card, when there is no number before the card name, it means i have 0 of the card.

The problematic part for me is mostly on what should i send...

$20 is the minimum value to send, but otherwise everything is correct. You can check the old bragging threads to get an idea of what people send (some go overboard and some...not so much). Everyone usually has a good time doing this though which is the best part.

Are you going to do a system of backups this year? There will probably be somewhere between 3-5 people who don't receive anything (there were 3 in North America, IIRC). If you have extra stuff, you can send that out as backups - I sent out a couple packages in January to people who still hadn't gotten anything. I was going to make it where anyone with under 50 post could not join but didn't think that would be fair. I do think the want list are far out of hand. Trying to keep mine reasonable but I am happy with anything I get.

I would send hookers and liquor but not sure I can mail them. may have to send Vizzerdrix(en ?plural form) again. LOl I remember one year I sent a dozen of them as the cover over the real cards in some sleeves.

You make some great points Mr Miagi. I loved all the personal notes and holiday card alters that many people sent in the old bragging threads. I think it should be acceptable to add whatever you want to your wishlist since it is just that, but have a range of prices from big to small. Someone may do the bare minimum or they may go big time since everyone is different with gifts. If that is not the proper etiquette then I completely understand though. As being a new member and one of those with <20 posts (joined the site yesterday, many thanks to the everyday eternal cast for directing me here) I can definitely understand his point of view. I would also be skeptical of a bunch of new people that just happen to show up wanting all very expensive things.

I know it seems little hypocritical of me due to my not exactly high post count, but I wouldn't be against banning or forbidding the < 50/75/100 whatever group members or going for another solution.

I think this started out between the small group of source members who absolutely love and keep this site going. Contributing, discussing, winning tournaments, the guys like Matt, Sean, etc, etc (You know who you all are) are the core of the site.

This was a nice way for those guys to trade gifts/pimp stuff every year, since you all went above/beyond the 20$ suggestion anyways.

Now, after the brag threads every year, you have people jumping in/leeching in an attempt to get some of that, which kinda ruins the spirit of the thing.

I only did it for one year, but I did my best to send out above/beyond the 20$ limit. Maybe if we upped the minimum suggested gift, and made it mandatory rather than suggested (say, to 40/50) we'd be able to cut out some of the freeloaders and make sure everyone gets something fun.

I was always under the impression that the Wishlist was simply there so people would have an idea for what you like. This isn't a gift registry; the whole point of Secret Santa is to spend time creating a meaningful present.
If people post up dual lands and $100 cards, well it will give you an idea of what they are into, but by no means are you obligated to get them those cards.

As has been said, it's a guide for what sort of things people like etc. Sure, some of the cards on my list are worth some decent money - but some aren't. Also, I agree that it's all about exchanging gifts and 'it's the thought that counts' etc. As long as some thought has gone into it then why would the recipient care if they didn't get a dual etc? That's not the point...

I appreciate I don't have many posts - I tend to read almost everything though! If this excludes me from being eligible for the Secret Santa then so be it. I just thought it would be fun to try and put a package together for somebody...

Wish list? Well honestly, I don't own any Legacy cards anymore. Storm went bye-bye a long time ago. Best finishes were a SCG top 16, day two at GP Denver and a loss to Bryant Cook at GP Indy when we were both already out of contention for day two.

Had to pay for a lot of bills when I was behind, which was unfortunate. However, I'd be happy with anything that gets me closer to any semi-playable Tier 2 or 3 deck so I can grind back up to where I was.

For those wondering, I'm financially stable now. Just don't have the extra income to invest in MTG like I used to. Also this doesn't mean I'm cheaping out on whoever I get.

I'm more than happy to splurge on some wants :wink:

About the want lists this year; I think people saw the big scores some people got last year and are wanting the same thing.

As for a wish list, I've been building japanese (non-foil) decks lately. Storm will probably be finished by Christmas, but next on my hit list is Goblins, and since I've got literally none of the cards for it so far, let's say any non-foil japanese goblins playables. Failing that, any non-english non-foil Legacy playables would be awesome, they'll all find homes in various decks.

Perhaps pair people by the extravagance of their wishlists? If people are putting ridiculous things on them that they expect to get, then they should at least be willing to send out similarly extravagant things to other people. Forum activity and willingness/ability to send nice presents don't seem like they would have much of a correlation to me.

Post count doesn't really mean much. We had some lurkers participate last year without problems. (EDIT: Then you'll also have members like me, who post way more than they should.)

"Wish list extravagance" is kind of complicating things unnecessarily. You're already taking into account national vs. international shippers (which is important for Europeans as there tend to be far fewer people to pair within a given country) and geographic location, assuming you want people shipping to other people nearby to reduce shipping time and costs. Then, on top of that, you're tracking who is sending at what time, whether those people are sending a single or multiple packages, whether the other party received, and so on. It's enough work already without having to read everyone's wishlist and score it according to how shameless it is. Plus, what's to say that two people with ridiculous wishlists have the same purchasing power? They could both be players trying to get someone else to foot the bill for their foil Korean Summer staples because they can't - or won't - try to get those cards for themselves. Then you end up with two people who are disappointed when they don't receive a stack of heinously expensive cards for Christmas.

To anybody worried about making a meaningful gift: consider making something. For example, last year I made a life counter that turned out really great and wasn't so hard to make. I have learned that for most of the rest of the world shipping charges are reasonable, but for some reason the USPS likes to charge a stack of money to ship a small package. To do this fair for the pairings. I am going to assign everyone a number and use a number generator to pair them except for a couple of people who looks like they joined within the last month or so who will get joined with each other.


Also if you have really sweet stuff on your wishlist I bet you have really sweet stuff to send as well. Just keep in mind the min is $20 and try not to ask for more then you could send, keep it fair and remember Wishlist are just a suggestion box. I have 30 each or so dark rituals and brainstorm and counterspells in very played condition if someone wants to be an ass about their wish list :) as much as every single person would love a russian zendikar fetch land altered by the artist and signed in 16 colors by Richard Garfield and Mark Rosewater every world champ and me...it most likely would not happen. Also my package is sealed with both DUCT tape and DUCK Tape just so in case they did not know the difference. Careful the DUCT tape is sharp on the edges because it is metal.

Get it sent asap to avoid holiday hell. It took 2-3 weeks from Germany to my place. Some packages arrived before 2 weeks, but I felt like those were outliers.

Except for Goblin Snowman and Falling Star, both completely unusable, there's just and endless stream of Burning XYZ, Lavastone ABC, Murderous ?!%, Lightning BlahBlahBlah, etc.
