Hey all, you may have noticed the Donate button in the upper right hand corner of the site. I wanted to provide an explanation so its sudden appearance isn't a complete mystery:

After the problems we were having the month before last with a large number of users getting constant 403 errors when trying to access the site, we determined that our site's usage had vastly outgrown the shared server where it's been hosted since its inception. I opted to move the site to its own private Rackspace server, which allows us to more easily address problems with the site when they arise, and gives us the ability to expand the server's capacity as the site continues to grow in popularity.

The downside is that it costs more money. The monthly fee for hosting used to be $15 per month, and the new cost is somewhere between $45 and $50 per month, depending on bandwidth usage.

Since 2003, I've paid to keep the site up and running out of pocket, to the tune of a few hundred dollars per year. I opted to do this because I and the other admins have always agreed we want to keep the site ad-free so The Source and its community are able to maintain their independent spirit.

Insofar as it's possible, we intend to continue an ad-free policy. That said, in the 10 years since the site was created, I've gotten married, bought a house, and had a kid. Long story short, my disposable income ain't what it used to be. With the increase in cost to keep the site running, we've decided to ask you guys to pitch in, if you want to and are able. If just a handful of users are able to pitch in even a few bucks a month, it will go a long way towards keeping us active and ad-free.

Thanks for your consideration, and for being fucking awesome. We appreciate you guys.

- zilla

EDIT: The button has been taken down for now, as we've met our goal of covering a year's worth of site costs. If you still want to donate and be added to the Site Contributors group, you can donate directly to my paypal: patrick.maeder2@gmail.com. Any further donations will be applied to the following year's site costs. Thanks!

I am 100% in favor of a donate button in place of ads.

That being said, it'd be cool if the donors got something in return, even if it was something as little as a "donor-only" title.

Also, donated. Thanks for everything thus far!

I get an error when I clicked on the Donate button to try to pitch in:

That being said, I wouldn't mind some ads if it's necessary to ensure you make ends meet. Perhaps something less invasive and more targeted like getting referral benefits from TCGPlayer when clicking on a card rather than linking to Deckbox (which slows down the site anyway).

Personally, I'd rather split the cost with a few dedicated people than have ads. My main concern is the problem that comes along with many out-of-the-box ad solutions. Google's ad solution is nice in that it's non-invasive and delivers nothing but text. However, in my experience, it simply doesn't deliver enough money.

Having cards automatically turn into referral links to TCGPlayer are definitely a cool idea and could potentially be enough to pay for the site. But unless they offer a solution that handles this for you, I'd guess that the work involved with implementing such a plan would be quite large, possibly greater than the benefit. (This is the part where I get bored and outsource the job to India for $27 because I like conding projects)

I like this, and I'll be sure to set up a paypal account and chip in a few bucks when I get my salary this month.

However, I'd like to know, say that me and 99 other Sourcers each chip in $5, which totals to $500 - will you remove the donation button for ten months and use the excess to keep the site running, or where does the surplus go?

The Source has been my source for distraction at work for years and I've been lurking the site since 2006 so I wouldn't mind giving something back in return :)

Thanks all for the support. To answer some questions/comments:

Purgatory: We haven't worked out the exact details yet, because we don't know precisely what the user response will be. But I can assure you that any money donated will be put towards site costs and nothing else. If we get an overwhelming response in the first few weeks or so, we'll likely take down the Donate button until those funds have been used, and then put the button back up again in several months once those funds have been depleted. I think that method would also have the added benefit of keeping members from becoming so used to the button that they forget it's there. If it's only up for a couple weeks out of every several months, I think people may be more likely to notice/respond to it. We'll work out an exact plan soon, but rest assured that any funds donated will be put towards running the site. Thanks for your input.

Lordofthepit: Sorry you're having trouble with the link. It works for me in all browsers, but if you (or anyone else) are having problems, you can enter my paypal manually: patrick.maeder2@gmail.com. Just make a note that it's for the Source so I can keep the funds separate. Thanks.

Crav: The admin staff agrees we'd prefer to keep the site ad free. That's how we've always done it and we want to keep it up as long as we can. I was actually considering a custom title and/or user color to highlight users who have donated. I think it's a good idea. I'll run it past the rest of the staff tomorrow and figure out how we want to implement that. People who are interested in this should include their Source username in the Paypal notes so I have an easy way to keep track of which members have donated. Thank you for your very generous contribution, by the way. ;)

I appreciate everyone's comments and support thus far. You guys are great. Feel free to keep posting suggestions/comments/concerns and I'll do my best to address them.

The "site contributor" title for the name is a good idea.

Also, when sending money thru paypal to your address (patrick.maeder2@gmail.com (patrick.maeder2@gmail.com)) just select SEND MONEY FOR GOODS AND SERVICES" that way the contributors dont have to pay a 2$ fee for the money x-fers

Btw, the link initially gave me the same error as above (using Chrome, verified PayPal account). However, after I manually logged into PayPal, then clicked the link, it worked fine for me.

I've also had the same error message when clicking the button.

Regardless, I managed to give you the rest of my money I've had on PayPal - it's not a lot, but I'm running low at the moment, anyways (speculations at the release of a new set, damn you!).
Enjoy your € ;)

If we got a couple people to donate a couple cards they could also be used as a revenue source via an ebay auction.

No offense (and I might add that I will donate for sure), but 45-50US$ a month, depending on bandwidth usage (which implies there usage-based billing - come on already, it's 2013!), sounds like a pretty darn shitty hosting plan/contract... you might want to reconsider that. If you shoot me a message with the hardware and connectivity specs you'd like to see covered, I might be able to offer, or at least point you to, a vastly better deal.

If you need help with tuning the website's performance without spending any extra money, I might be able to offer an advice or two as well.

@kiblast: we've actually been discussing the creation of new playmats as an alternative means to raise funds for site maintenance. They don't require a huge initial investment. The real sticking point is that we can't sell anything with copyrighted artwork on it, which means we need to find original, relevant artwork to use for it. I did a quick mockup of a playmat using some old artwork I did that was loosely inspired by Necropotence, but it would probably be more appropriate for Vintage, given the subject matter. It can give you a rough idea of what one might look like, though, if you're curious: click (http://www.tdtffc.com/misc/playmat1.jpg).

Basically I need to find the time to create more Legacy relevant artwork, or we need to find some royalty-free artwork that fits that description.

@colo: No offense taken. Here's the situation: when users started getting 403 errors last month, I contacted our host's technical support, and they basically told me that a) our site was on a shared server, and b) the site is doing so much traffic that their server thought it was being DDOSed by our users, which was causing their IPs to be blocked, hence the 403 errors. They said that we really needed to move to our own private server. When I asked them what they charged for that, they said it would cost $89 per month, at which point I bid them good day.

I opted to use Rackspace (http://www.rackspace.com), because they're one of the largest and most trusted hosting providers in the country, I and the company I work for have used them for years, they have top notch technical support, and they allow root access to the server, which our old host did not. Initially, we set up with Rackspace's lowest tier server, which is $15.95 per month plus bandwidth. (Note: when I say they charge for bandwidth, it's a really nominal cost. We did several gigs of traffic last month for around 6 bucks. Charging for bandwidth usage on private servers is pretty standard practice these days.)

Unfortunately, their lowest tier server only has 512k of RAM allocated to it, and the site's users hammered the server so hard in the first few hours that Apache choked and could never catch back up. We altered a few Apache settings, and upgraded to the next tier, which is a 1GB server, which (mostly) fixed the problems. Unfortunately, this tier is $40 per month plus bandwidth. Also, even with the increased RAM, we're still pushing the limits of the server's capabilities at peak hours. We do a surprising amount of traffic, and it puts a huge strain on the server. The next tier up (2GB) is $80 per month plus bandwidth, so we're hoping we can avoid the need to upgrade further.

That's the situation as it stands. If you feel you have any advice to offer on the subject, I'm happy to discuss it with you. Just hit me via PM about it. I appreciate your input and support.

@Paypal issues: I'm using the code that Paypal provides, so it should work flawlessly. I'll do some research and see what I can find. I'm wondering if location might have something to do with the problem? For those that are experiencing the issue, can you tell me where you're located geographically?

@Custom user level: The admin staff has discussed this and we agree we want to do it. We'll be creating a custom user level called "Site Contributor" that will have a custom title (if you want one) and its own user color (perhaps a tasteful teal, a la the old Legacy Adept user group?) The sticking point is that I have no way of knowing which users have contributed unless they include their Source username in the Paypal notes, so please do so if you want to be part of this usergroup. For those who have already donated, send me a PM with your real name and I can use that to verify that you've contributed.

Thanks again for your support.

Thanks for your answer. I'm definitely going to try to produce some legacy-esque art and send it to you. I'm no Leonardo da Vinci but I'm not a total art scrub. If I come up with something that satisfies me and could be good enough for a playmat I'll definitely send it. Just give me some time...

Technically we wouldn't really be "keeping" any excess money in the sense that it's being pocketed. Regardless of how much we receive in donations, money will always have to go back into the site to keep it running so it'll find it's way back here one way or another. This just ensures us that we can comfortably do that for a much longer time.

And I want to give a big thank you to everyone who has supported us thus far, and to everyone who plans to in the future. It makes a huge difference guys, we truly appreciate it.

@mini1337s: The custom user group will be rather understated. Only an individual user's name will be a different color (much like mine and other admins' are red). Their posts will continue to look like everyone else's. As for a custom user title, site contributors will be allowed to use "Site Contributor" as their custom title if they so choose. I don't consider this particularly ostentatious or obnoxious. It simply denotes that a particular member cares about the community enough to be involved financially. Technically anyone can change their custom user title to say Kawaiiiii right now if they want to. =p

@Magic Fanatic: I guess we could do check or money order, if you want. If that's something you're interested in doing, you can shoot me a PM and I'll provide an address where you can send one. Thanks for asking.

@Que: Honestly we haven't put a huge amount of thought into it yet. Since the mats are for the community, I'm interested in everyone's input. Perhaps we can put together a collection of potential art pieces to use for a Source playmat and have the community vote on the design(s) they like the best?

@luckme10: As far as I know, proceeds from the cafepress store go to Source admin Nightmare, who original set up the shop years ago. I assume he's been spending that money on beard maintenance. It's possible that we'll set up an "official" shop with other merch like t-shirts and hats once we get the new playmats designed and produced.

@Bed Decks Palyer: I appreciate the sentiment, but I don't expect compensation for the money I've invested in the site over the years. We've got a great, thoroughly independent community and that's good enough for me. As stated previously, all funds collected will go right back towards site costs.

@Karadis: Excluding contributions from the admin staff, our users have donated $384.49 in the last day and a half. This is much better than anticipated. You guys have been amazingly generous, and it will go a long way towards keeping the site paid for. We can't thank you enough. You guys are awesome.

Any amount I set will be somewhat arbitrary, but certainly if we break $600 in contributions we'll be taking the button down, as that would account for at least a year of site costs, which is a nice round number. The button would then be put back up next year, once those funds have been depleted.

Having another colour may confuse new posters that the person with that colour could be a secondary level Admin or something.

Sent from my mobile, forgive spelling and grammatical errors.

This is a legitimate concern, but I'm not sure how much of a problem it would actually be. Admins are red, and mods are maroon, both shades of red. Our plan for the Site Contributors was to have them be some shade of blue, different enough that they're distinct from the basic Member, but not so much so that you'd be inclined to think they're part of the staff. Also, we'd likely change the default user title for that group from Member to Site Contributor, so those members that contributed but have not changed their title to something custom would all be represented that way, which would be another cue to new users as to what the different color means.

This is all open to discussion, of course. It's important to us that users who have contributed are recognized for their contribution, but obviously we want that to be in a way that's pleasing to the community as a whole, so if you have suggestions in this regard, don't hesitate to share them.

I pay for an SCG Premium subscription that I only occasionally read.

I read this shiz erryday. And I get shaky and nervous when the site goes down for any reason. So I'm more than happy to donate.

Thanks for keeping The Source up and running all these years. Also thanks for Angel Stompy.

Wow, when you put it that way. Yeah, the Source is way better than Premium. Admins, you guys are awesome. Finally go around to donating, glad I could chip in.

I wish we could, but the old ones contained copyrighted artwork. We don't want to infringe on Wizards' intellectual property, and we couldn't legally sell them to recoup the costs of printing them. They'll have to remain a fond memory, I'm afraid.

What about designing new ones? Use the source logo and maybe have a talented artist make original recreations of the classic MTG arts? Just spitballing.

Zilla, you know what I would love to see? T-shirts or polos for The Source. I know that we have some fantastic artist inside our community that would be happy to contribute some non-copyright art. When going to big events, wearing your The Source shirt should be something to show your affection to this site.

In order for this to be successful and widely recognized though, we would need the owners/admins of The Source to officially support this. Maybe I'm thinking to big, but in case you're familiar with the concept, I'm looking at the way teamliquid.net has been promoting its brand over the last 2-3 years

Also: high quality shirts. I'd be very willing to pay 40-50€ for a The Source polo if the quality was decent.

+1

And lately, more and more of our members been performing good finish at multiple events across the globe (Mr. Cook w/ T.E.S. is a good example for North America). This could bring growth to the site and more contributor.

Just something we might wanna explore eventually.

This has already been discussed a bit earlier in this thread, but yeah, we plan to make new playmats. Exact recreations of classic MTG artwork won't work, but artwork inspired by that artwork would work. Like I said earlier in this thread, there's a possibility we might take artwork submissions from community members and then vote on the one we'd like to see turned into a playmat. We're open to other suggestions as well. Let us know what you guys would like and we'll see what we can do.

This is also something we're interested in doing. A long time ago there were some Cafe Press shirts and hats created by Nightmare, but they weren't particularly well thought-out. (No offense intended to Nightmare - he just put them together super quick right before a major event, if I recall correctly.)

In any case, I want to do this. It would be a nice way to generate a little extra revenue for site maintenance, and it would be awesome to give our members a way to represent The Source at tournaments. We need to figure out artwork (maybe just a simple logo?), and we also need to figure out who we want to use to make shirts and handle order fulfillment. Cafe Press is kinda ghetto, honestly. I've heard good things about a site called Zazzle (http://www.zazzle.com), so I'll do a little research and see if we want to set up a storefront through them.

As with the play mats, we're open to user suggestions on shirts and other merchandise as well.

As far as a playmat, I would like to see an artist's rendering of some iconic legacy match-up in universe. I tend to get the most utilitarian mats and deckboxes, but I'd pay extra to see a playmat with a bunch of goblins charging down a phyrexian dreadnought, or emrakul annihilating several tarmogoyfs.

It also just so happens I am consulting a startup that is looking to break open the tee shirt business. Post what we want, and have different printers/manufactures bid on the job.

If someone can get me the art, i can see what I can do.

I also actually work for a Sporting Goods company with their own team sales division. This means I can get us pretty much anything made. Nike Dri-Fit polo's would be nice.

If there is interest I can inquire.

This! We could do something similar to the Mirrodin Besieged promotional artwork (for reference: http://manashift.com/wp-content/uploads/Mirrodin-Besieged-Preview-Art1-564x902.jpg) with creatures and spells from fair decks--Tarmogoyf, Piledriver, Bob, Batterskull, Lightning Bolt, Nimble Mongoose, etc--going toe-to-toe with those of unfair decks--Emrakul, Griselbrand, Grapeshot, Craterhoof, Dreadnought, Ravager, etc--since legacy is so defined by the fair/unfair question when you are choosing what deck to play.

I like how goyf is not considered fair (i remember when there were clamoring for bans) but grapeshot and ravager are unfair?

I think something like the playmat would be really cool but have the cards combined. Force of Will mage spinning a SDT, goyf busting out of the wasteland, dark confidant going off with a plow on his shoulder. More of a mashup of some of the iconic cards all put together in one (or many small) different pieces of new art.

Donate Button Update:

You may have noticed that the Donate Button is gone. In under 5 days, Source members have contributed a total of $642.95, an amount which will cover site costs for a little over a year. The staff thanks you for your generosity. The enthusiasm and strength of character engendered by this site's community is remarkable. You guys are awesome. Thank you.

If you wanted to donate but didn't get an opportunity to, you can still contribute by going to paypal and manually entering my email address, which is patrick.maeder2@gmail.com. Be sure to make a note that it's for The Source, and include your Source username if you want to be added to the Site Contributors usergroup.

Any further funds donated will simply push back the time when the Donation button will again rear its ugly head. As it stands, you won't be seeing it until October 2014.

Thanks again you guys!

EDIT: Those members who contributed have been added to the Site Contributors usergroup. Their names will appear in teal, and their default title is Site Contributor. If you don't want your title to be Site Contributor, you can override it with a custom title in your profile settings. If you don't want your name to appear in teal, just shoot me a PM and I'll change your default display usergroup back to Member.

I'm certain that a few donors were not added to the Site Contributors usergroup. This was not intentional - I simply don't have every donor's Source username. If I missed you, please send me a PM about it and we'll get you added to the group. Thanks.

I've a spare mat sitting at my place -- bought it for a friend whom has always wanted to but has not picked it up yet. Didn't know it was in such demand. Btw, Swift is good, but I'd also recommend Candide by Voltaire -- a far better satirical work.

Will donate from time to time, thanks for keeping this site up and running.

Just to let you know, I bought one of the Source mats for 150. Beyond that, people have offered 300 for others and got rejected.

However... I know the admins were wanting to get a hold of the one I obtained but I was too quick ;) I think the admins are wanting to use it as a prize for a site competition or something. I'd contact them and see if they're interested in purchasing it.

Hey all, if anyone here would like some help with the design of a source playmat. I would love to throw my hand in to help with the design.

I'm a professional artist working in the game industry for about 10 years. Can view my work @

http://www.myelectronicdays.com/

or http://myelectronicdays.cghub.com/

I paint alot of custom playmats for people in my local area (austin,tx).. and have a great working relationship with Jeremy and Inked playmats as well.

If any mods want to PM me, I would love to help out such a great community.

Make it a black and white "Battle Royal" with all the iconic cards in the Legacy universe with lots of details. The concept would of course have to come from someone with a broad understanding for the Legacy metagame but it would REALLY be worth it. I'm thinking about ~30 different creatures/spells being represented with the "The Source" logo in the middle.

Like a big big fight happening around the logo stretching all over the playmat! Brainstorm whirling around a Fetchland and two other cards, a Natural Order killing a Dryad Arbor and summoning a Craterhoof Behemoth. I see a Goblin Lackey being stopped cold by a Deathrite Shaman that then casts a Stoneforge Mystic that is about to grab Umezawa's Jitte. I see Doomsday being cast off Dark Ritual right next to a spinning Sensei's Divining Top and a smashed in Counterbalance, destroyed by an Abrupt Decay right next to it. On the bottom we see a very tight pack of Lord of Atlantis, Master of the Pearl Trident, Coralhelm Commander and also Silvergill Adept which has just come off a Aether Vial while all of them are being held back by a Peacekeeper. On the right side, Show and Tell is being cast and puts Griselbrand into play while right next to it, Knight of the Reliquary has just entered the battlefield (with Karakas in the background). We see Infernal Tutor right next to two broken Lion's Eye Diamonds, all coming out of the mouth of the guy on Ad Nauseam with Tendrils of Agony in the background, reaching out to physically grab and abuse a Snapcaster Mage, Dark Confidant and other iconic Legacy creatures. Three tiny Tarmogoyf are facing off a gigantic Emrakul, the Aeons Torn but viewed from a cliff to provide good perspective and not make the Tarmogoyfs actually appear small on the playmat. At some point we see Force of Will burning down a Goblin Charbelcher with several Goblin Tokens (off Empty the Warrens) jumping out of the cannon on the Charbelcher and running towards a Tundra and being shutdown by a Terminus.. Oh boy...

And in the middle of all of this: "The Source - Your Source For Legacy - mtgthesource.com".

Of course, there's so much more to add to this but I hope I was able to convey how I imagine this to look like! Hell, I'd easily pay 50€+ for something like that!

I've already started sketching it out. I can keep it black and white if thats what people want. Color could look slick also. I spend almost 11+ hours a day on my cintiq painting, so I don't mind either way.

man.. that original goyf art.. took me atleast 5 minutes to figure out where a face might even be.

It's a lot easier to see in the original, without the future sight frame around it:

I would very much prefer a black and white style as I've always appreciated that style; I like my cards not blending too much with the colors on the playmat. On the other hand of course, white playmats are a pain in the ass to keep physically clean, I assume.

They do get gross fairly quickly. We could alleviate that a bit by using a light grey instead of a white background. Black on grey could look cool. It really depends on the art though. Mister Electronic Days is the professional artist. We can defer to his expert judgment.

Reading the sort of "vision" how the playmat should look like rendered my jaw unable to close, so my ramen started dropping back into the bowl. Curses!

I'm stoked to see the mockup of this.
Also, I'd probably buy 2 or 3 of these playmats, pretty much no matter the cost.

I think a full color version for the playmat and then a monochrome (tinted grayscale) version of the same artwork for a t-shirt would be pretty dope. For that to really work visually (on the t-shirt), the full color piece would have to be pretty contrasty, though.

Also, I can provide you with a vector version of the site logo if it would be helpful to you. If you'd rather I add it to the completed artwork after it's finished, that's fine too. (I promise I won't fuck it up.)

I once sent a Thrun, the Last Troll farming. That was spectacular. (Props to Humility)

Agreed that we will also need StP on the playmat. Also, a way to pay tribute to Canadian Threshold, our one and true king. Lightning Bolt, Nimble Mongoose, Delver and maybe a Stifle hitting a Wasteland or something. Also, what card you would say gets Daze'ed most often in Legacy?

Kayradis
09-26-2013, 07:13 AM
IMHO, I'd prefer a simple playmat (...like the one I have?). I always been a firm believer that Legacy is a gentlemen (?) sport and we don't need all the flashyness of an overloaded playmat when we can simply show off with pimped-over-the-top deck(Ref: Bryant Cook, Royce Walter,Feline & Danyul decks).

We don't need flashy playmats.
Skills + Deck "pimpness" > Flashy playmats.

Flashy playmats can be bought anywhere.

Depending on how Dave's illustration turns out, we could theoretically have two versions of the playmat, one in full color and one in monochrome. I think once the artwork is finalized we can start a discussion and maybe a poll about it. Obviously we want to produce what people are most interested in having, so if there's very low interest in either version, we'd probably avoid it and focus on the other.

Ok here is what I have mocked up so far and what I was envisioning for the mat.. taking alot of previous ideas and kind of montaging it all together as well. NOTE: this isn't near final. alot needs to be rendered out and more characters added (more goblins etc).. most of my time was spent moving diferent parts around and figuring out how i wanted to pose things. Lots to be done and added!

at the same time I wanted to get something up early to make sure people were liking this type of direction. Trying to modify characters a bit if i could also (craterhoof is prob too similar).

This will be painted at a pretty high res also.

I do also like the idea of the black and white image with the color logo on top. Keeps it a bit classier imo ;)

Yep, lots of good stuff going on there. Here's what I've found:

- Goyf
- Delver
- Griselbrand
- Moat
- Firestorm
- Lord of Atlantis
- Goblin Charbelcher
- Tendrils of Agony
- Karakas
- Craterhoof Behemoth
- Emrakul
- JTMS
- Stoneforge
- Force of Will
- Sensei's Divining Top (with Masques brainstorm bubbles around it)
- Empty the Warrens

Anything I'm missing?

@Alphastryk, I think the cat on the cliff is supposed to be Natural Order. And I don't think that's Jace, it's Knight of the Reliquary by the letter U. And the one beside Tendrils would probably be Infernal Tutor, with some Lion's Eye Diamonds. Oh and maybe Lightning Bolt behind him.

Dave doesn't need to worry too much about the graphic design specifics if he doesn't want to. I can take care of adding in the logo/url to the finalized artwork. Right now he's got the logo in there to get a sense of how it will integrate into the final piece.

I don't think SFM should ever touch the things she fetches. In her art she just kinda hangs out and wills the equipment into being. It is appropriate that the Jitte is floating. Also I think that Deathrite Shaman idea is really cool.

I like how you managed to incorporate Vial via the hand pouring something on the merfolk, and Show and Tell via the eye and tentacles monster.

Nice suggestion regarding Deathrite beside the Goyf.

Few more possible suggestions. Dark Confidant can fit into that space between Stoneforge and Infernal, making it seem like there is something evil counseling Bob. The merfolk could unwittingly get his thoughts seized by a faerie beside his ear. STP could probably be represented by the bearded person holding his stick beside the cat on the cliff overlooking something. Might not make much sense but I can't see putting him anywhere else.

Again, awesome job on the art.

Another thing that might be worth working in is something more explocitly "Goblins" oriented. The ones by the Charbelcher appear to be of the "Empty the Warrens" variety, which is awesome, but Goblins as a deck has been a part of legacy forever, so working on a Lackey, Piledriver or Matron would be very appropriate. Or maybe they're in there somewhere and I just missed them ;-)

There's always a fine line from recreating very well known wotc characters and them throwing the hammer down on a mat like this. I had the deathrite shaman in a previous piece that was axed, so that guy puts a fear in me now ;)

I feel like we could keep adding tons and tons of characters to it.. but I was worried of the piece becoming overly busy.. where as right now there is enough open space to let it breathe and the composition to flow easier. all the feedback has been great though, and lets hope to all be rocking these mats very soon

Someone needs to get stomped by elves more. Craterhoof is our win con.

Sent from my mobile, forgive spelling and grammatical errors.

I know what deck it's from, I just don't think he's iconic. Anyway, the playmat's awesome.

I think it's safe to say that all the suggestions should be taken in the "If you were looking for something else to put in, this would be nice, but if in your artistic opinion you think it's as full as it can get then just call it done!" sense. It's really awesome as is, and if we can get playmats printed up with this version I think everyone would be incredibly happy with it.

I like how it is right now in it's inclusion of different characters and cards. It has enough at various parts of the mat to be recognizeable and enough hidden ones to keep it exciting without being too busy. If anything else IS added, I think it would be minor additions and mostly tweaking of the current piece of work. I'm in love with this  I am thinking I may have a version of it for my desktop

Everyone's coming up with lots of ideas and requests and obviously it should be very hard to satisfy everyone but I just wanted to drop a comment as well. The Jitte looks too much at the front to me while everything else seems to be blended nicely together, maybe you could work it into the background a bit more. Other than that, great stuff!

I agree, possibly move the jitte a bit closer to SFM and reduce the white outline to be more subtle as the background it darker, It draws attention to it.

Maybe reduce the size of craterhoof just a tad and add some small images of something?

I'm Loving the design,none-the-less.

Idea: if you drop the show and tell tentacles (they're friggin' awesome but you've already got Emrakul and Grizzlebees) and add a warchief (attacking the LoA, maybe?), I think most of the bases will have been covered for legacy decks. Cards I'd love to see still (but understand that there is ultimately a non-infinite amount of room):

-Deathrite
-Bob
-Stifle
-Daze
-Burning Wish
-Swords to Plowshares
-Abrupt Decay
-Arcbound Ravager
-Chalice of the Void

It speaks to the sheer variety of Legacy's card pool that there are still so many other beloved cards, though.

I also love the brainstorm dots around the Top, Hoofie (the bastard has certainly stomped me once or twice) and the Blood Moon

I think Dave's about ready to be done, which is fine, because in my opinion the piece looks fucking amazing. Here's what it's looking like with a few final minor tweaks (Jitte is a little less dark, Chalice got added, logo stands out slightly more, and site url added):

Zilla I did a screen print flag for an alliance I have in some other game, and we shipped internationally really cheap. USPS flat rate international is like 10 bucks (cheap for international).

Then USPS flat rate domestic is like 4-5.

FYI.

I actually like the cute faces, especially on the ladies. I think it gives the overall piece a lighter and more energetic feel.

My preference so far is for the all blue look as well. It's a nod to the old playmat as well as the traditional Source banners.

I agree, I've never been a fan of grimdark/overly gritty art (looking at you, Swanland). That style seems to take itself too seriously, especially when overdone like it tends to be.

A clean, even cutesy style like this is refreshing, and I'm liking it so far. Looking forward to the finished product!

Talking about awesomly bizarre hats? I recommend attending more big European Legacy events. Try to be paired against as many Dutch as possible; chances are you will eventually run into "one of those guys" with the very special hats.
