Hi guys,

I met a good friend through Magic back in grade school (around 4th edition) and we played until high school when we both quit. I came back to the game a while ago but he hasn't, stating the game isn't what it used to be and that he doesn't really like what it has become. We've played a bit since but he can't compete with my cards now.

Long story short - can you guys name me the stronger(est) cards in the old border for each colour? I'd like to play against him again, but I'd prefer to have suggestions for cards he (and I) might like to use so he doesn't get overwhelmed going through all of Gatherer.

Thanks.

Haha yes to Legacy.

He has always played R/G so I don't see that changing. His creature lists includes Shivan Dragons etc. (I know, I know). I suppose creatures/permanents for each colour (I have to make decks to play vs. him too) would have been a better question, since I DO play Legacy and am pretty familiar with the best sorceries/instants (old Magic tends to kick ass in that department).

Thanks again.

I don't agree with your list entirely (Tolarian Academy > Library, Fastbond > Regrowth, Yawgmoth's Will > Tutor), but it's amazing how much they pushed green in the last 10 years.

You should try Magic 94. Even without Power, it's an absolute blast.

Decks like this will be up your guys alley (minus power)

The 93/94 format is exactly what your looking for. It has replaced Edh for my play group.

Hoping to get there soon. So many project and so little 93/94 time :(

I like the idea but can't give up my Koreeens to play 93/94 ... wonder if we could get enough for some 93/94 (with korean) at Eternal Weekend?

Very cool. Granted, we'd be playing with a lot of 'proxies' haha. Thanks.

I don't think there is anything wrong as long as the card doesn't have a copywrite date after 1994. Sure, the format is expensive and exclusive, but doesn't Korean BB fall under those lines?

Non-English versions and reprints after Unlimited is considered proxies, and 93/94 is not played with proxies.

So no Foreign cards or Revised.

Sure, and I know that, I'm just saying that this is not an officially sanctioned format, so why not make your own rules and allow Revised and Foreign? Pretty sure that's what the Swedes did when they made up the format :P

Haha I know, and that's why I wrote I'd be playing with 'proxies'. I just meant if you were going to try something more 'official', then those FFB duals technically wouldn't be allowed. If no one cares though then you should - I personally find the extra bit kind of dumb since Revised WAS printed in 1994. Either ban Unlimited as well or allow both.

So. True.

Either way, if you ask specifically about Legacy and don't mind to play with cheap cards, then maybe this list of mine might be reasonable:

white:
Swords to Plowshares
Mother of Runes
Armageddon
Wrath of God (not quite cheap)
clerics/knights

blue:
Counterspell
Daze
Submerge
Serendib Efreet
Brainstorm
folks

black:
Dark Ritual
Duress
Hymn to Tourach
Innocent Blood
Hypnotic Specter
knights/clerics

red:
Lightning Bolt
rest of the Burn.dec stuff (see the deck's thread, maybe it's not budget anymore)
Blood Moon
Burning Wish (is it cheap still?)
Devastating Dreams (though it needs a deck to be build around)
goblins

green:
Birds of Paradise
Terravore
Nimble Mongoose
Choke
Sylvan Library
Rancor
elves

multicolor:
Pernicious Deed (not exactly budget)
Lim Dul's Vault
Spiritmonger
Mystic Enforcer

artifact:
Winter Orb
Tormod's Crypt
Masticore
Nevinyrilalyrilalriylalarl's Disk
Ensnaring Bridge
Smokestack

lands:
Dust Bowl
Strip Mine (umm, ok, not exactly Legacy, but...)
Cephalid Coliseum
City of Brass
Gemstone Mine
Mishra's Factory
painlands
Mirage fetchlands (no, they aren't, but...)

Btw, I like the 93/94 format, but as it would need lots of work to start a community in our lgs, and most of the players would be the EDHers and moreover I'd love to play 93-95 (because Alliceho), I won't make anything about it. But yes, it looks like a format you look for. Nice thing is that you really don't need to dig any new cards and you may do whatever local rules you like, e.g. going up one year, or allowing an edition you like or w/e.
There's a guy in our lgs who built an EDH made solely of cards from the first fifteen aditions of MtG, meaning he ended with Mirage. (Maybe this needs to be creative with counting, however Alpha/Beta and Chronicles open a huge space for cheating), but as I disliked that this doesn't finish the MIR block, and as I disliked the number 17, I've chosen the first twenty editions, ending with the whole Tempest block and of course all the base editions up to and including Fifth. (Again, maybe you need to tweak your arithmetics a bit, but you know...)

I would be all for a reverse Modern format. Only old card faces allowed.
