View Full Version : SCG Opens in 2014 - Back to the Legacy

"Continued Support of the Legacy Format
Earlier this year, we experimented with offering Opens using a number of different formats and configurations. The results of each experiment were disappointing by every metric, so for 2014 we plan on returning to the Open Series formats we know our players want to play and our SCGLive viewers want to watch: Standard every Saturday followed by Legacy every Sunday."
Looks like we're back to Legacy on Sundays. This is fantastic news!

Nice. This should at least stop the conspiracy theories about SCG and Wizards trying to destroy Legacy (at least for a little while).

Awesome. That was the most disappointing when the circuit was coming through the area but it was something like double Standard or Limited. Stoked for Legacy at every Open.

I've noticed SGC attendances had gone up in Legacy events, but i'm not sure how much of that is real increased interest and how much is just less opportunities to play = more players at the less frequents events. Still, really good news, and i hope WotC start supporting this format starting with Legendary duals in some commander precon.

Idiots. Why did they even try to lower the amount of Legacy opens...

In the end, the experiment with non-Legacy Sundays was a good thing for us, because it showed that the apparent popularity of Legacy is not just the vocal minority, but the actual sentiments of the playerbase. Yay for us!

The most surprising thing was that they didnt try modern. Double standard and team sealed are obviously awful, modern is debatable but the fact that they would't even try it speaks volumes about it's popularity.

I think we'll see a huge surge in popularity once Modern PTQ season starts this upcoming summer. I don't doubt Modern will make an appearance to SCG Opens in the future. I'm happy to see Legacy being supported currently and throughout 2014. Fortunately, the amount of cards that are Modern legal are about as equal as the cards non-Modern legal. Last I check, SCG is a business and wants to maximize profit potential -- hence supporting Legacy provides a market for those cards. It's a symbiotic relationship that's to the benefit of both Legacy enthusiasts like ourselves and SCG as a dealer.

Fantastic! The way I see it, it's a smart business move; Legacy clearly is a popular format, and the WotC wants nothing to do with it. SCG capitalizes on this and they really have no competition aside from 2 GPs a year.

I'm glad they kept Team Sealed as a Classic format. It looked fun to play, watching it however was awful. I wouldn't mind it as a side event, either. I don't play standard, so I'd probably do a team sealed side event on Saturday if it was available, and I'm sure there's a good number of standard players that would do the same on Sundays.

At least you guys get all the ones that Texas gets. They cancelled the one that was going to be down here in the swamp!

Plus next year, they're the TO for GP: New Jersey (which actually makes me look forward to it due to all the positive things I've heard about the GPs they ran this year).

They looked at their data and likely saw the same thing. Huge drops in traffic on those weekends and the days after.

Remember to support SCG just as you would support your LGS for holding these events!

To be fair, it was schedule at the same time, in the same place, as an anime convention.

With or without a SCG Open there, it's not like any Colossal Whale would be tapped there either way.

New response from Pete:
(Pete) For the record, I love Modern, think it is a great format and think WotC is doing a great job supporting it. In fact, we’re super excited to be hosting next year’s Grand Prix: Richmond, which happens to be a Modern GP, so mark your calendars Modern fans!
However, Legacy is also a fantastic format that unfortunately, but understandably, gets nowhere near the same level of support from WotC. That’s where we come in.
At the end of the day, everyone is given opportunities to support their favorite, both formats continue to grow, and the rising tide continues to lift all boats. And when that happens… everybody wins.
Maybe this could be the opening needed to possibly get them to support Vintage as well?

Out of curiosity, did anyone here watch limited formats?
The format is so boring for me to watch, the players barely have control over their decks and you can't learn anything from watching it.

The original dual lands are, was and will always be dual lands. If any released cycle is not the original dual lands (or some even more nonsense "better duals"), then the format's demand will never be solved. Print "new duals" will never favor people that don't own the originals. It will just provide those that own them with another option. No way this could be a satisfying solution.

For decks that use less than 4-of certain duals, they could use say new legendary duals as a direct substitutes for one of the originals.
I'm pumped that they are going back to Legacy Sundays, but no northeast tournaments in the first quarter kind of blows....

The most surprising thing was that they didnt try modern. Double standard and team sealed are obviously awful, modern is debatable but the fact that they would't even try it speaks volumes about it's popularity.
I think they might have been concerned that people would panic about them permanently replacing Legacy with Modern. There was already some mild panic about them replacing Legacy with another Standard or Sealed (not just for a particular weekend, but permanently), have it be Modern instead, which people already sorta thing of as a possible replacement, and the panic gets way higher.
I wonder if there also might have been a sales factor. The cards that are big in Modern tend to also be big in Legacy, but a bunch of the big cards in Legacy aren't in Modern, so if you push Modern you basically just end up with people buying what they would've bought for Legacy but without the stuff that's Legacy-only. Standard, at least, causes a lot of cards to be in-demand that wouldn't be otherwise (Legacy players have little need for something like Stormbreath Dragon), but Modern just causes people to want to buy the stuff they would've wanted for Legacy but without the Legacy-only stuff.
Though I'd much rather watch them do Modern every now and then than a double Standard, and I like Standard. It's just boring to see it back-to-back, and it's not like you're hard up for ever watching coverage of Standard events. There's not much video coverage of Modern events, though, outside of Grand Prix, and Wizards hasn't even been giving all of those video coverage.
Out of curiosity, did anyone here watch limited formats?

I thought the Modern Masters Grand Prix was interesting to watch, but there were a number of factors there that don't apply to your regular Limited event.

Yep, from what I remember they used to be one of the biggest supporters of Vintage long ago. Kinda why I hope they might give it more support some day.

How good would that be! They could run a Vintage side event on the Saturday for those who rock up for the weekend and don't play Standard.
Can't believe I'm getting excited about this even though I live in Australia. Must be because I played sanctioned Vintage for the second time this year last Sunday :P

The SCG Vintage tournaments were 10 proxy and gave away power as prizes. There are many in the vintage community who blame SCG for the migration of power to Europe (you don't need it to play a proxy tourney, so ship 'em to the highest bidder) and the eventual demise of the format, since no one had any power to play with.

what does SCG have to do with migrating power to europe?

With a proxy rule there would be no reason to own power other than for collection purposes. So people sold and the people who actually played sanctioned vintage (euros) bought up power
