In episode eleven of #EverydayEternal, Sean O’Brien (nedleeds), Matt Pavlic (sdematt) and Sam Craven (@TheCravenOne on Twitter) respond to listener feedback. We start by exploring our Johnny side, and discussing how we prefer to play. We move on to Deathrite Shaman and whether he’s bannable. This paves the way to questioning what makes a card bannable, and some thoughts on cards that could be unbanned.

For the last half of the cast, the guys discuss deckbuilding. There’s a little bit of complaining about netdecking, but the focus is on how to build it your own way. This includes ten minutes of brewing the next generation of Esper Stoneblade from scratch.

Special thanks to Chad M, SitharthanS, Adrian K, and Martin N for their feedback which got this episode started.

Here’s the timestamped table of contents for your listening ease and enjoyment:
0:00:23 What is your favorite Johnny deck?
0:09:04 Will Deathrite Shaman be banned?
0:15:23 What makes a card bannable?

Pre-Reading/Listening Exercise:

0:00:23 What is your favorite Johnny deck?

Salvagers Combo!! Fell in love with the Salvagers combo loop when I read a feature match coverage with Maximillian Bracht playing the deck. It was pretty cool also seeing it place 2nd in GenCon 2006.

0:09:04 Will Deathrite Shaman be banned?

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFuuuucccckkkk no.

0:15:23 What makes a card bannable?

Key thing to remember, audience: popular =/= dominating.

0:23:15 Cards that could be unbanned: Earthcraft, Mind Twist, and Mind’s Desire

Earthcraft and Mind's Desire, as all of the arguments I've seen for keeping them banned have been pretty weak. I guess Mind Twist would be a hair's breadth safe, but I'm not eager as I once was to see it unbanned, because I don't care to see DRS-fueled Mind Twists on turn 3-4. But I would absolutely LOVE to play it in Affinity with Sol lands

Survival is still ban worthy for repeatable tutoring reason. Hello? With enough Mana, it's not a one-time tutor, it's multiple tutors per turn or over turns. How many Magic cards in its history allow you to tutor over and over, sometimes in the same turn?

Hypergeometric distribution is very cool and important, Richard Garfield would be proud every time someone mentions it.

Matt, that Survival of the Fittest/Pebbles deck is my favorite deck of all time, and it was the one I played in my first PTQ ever.

Re listener feedback: Which one of your listeners suggested that Deathrite Shaman should be on trial? Griselbrand?

Re listener feedback: Which one of your listeners suggested that Deathrite Shaman should be on trial? Griselbrand?

The prompt was "What would you like to hear us talk about"

The response was:
Deathrite Shaman's impact on Legacy, and if its warping of the format could warrant a ban in the future. Maybe more generally, criteria for a card getting banned in Legacy.

I don't think this person meant to imply that Deathrite will be banned, but rather a discussion of whether it could be and why or why not. There's been more than a few people talking about a possible banning, so I think*it's worth discussing, if only to say that it won't be banned and why it won't be banned.

I forgot that we even recorded this. Thanks Sam for editing this pile of idiocy.

Mind's Desire would be fucking miserable. It's better Ad Nauseum that pitches to Force and much of the time *CASTS* another better bluer Ad Nauseum. It *CASTS* the exiled spells! Holy hell do the people who think this is OK as a 4 of even understand the MTG terms: Cast and Storm and Trigger.

MD says CAST. So you desire with storm 4 lets say. Now you flip cards and exile them ... you then CAST those spells. Further building storm .... and when you flip another Mind's Desire ... IT TRIGGERS STORM AGAIN WHEN YOU CAST THE FLIPPED MD.

I want the next Listener Feedback to feature Sean explaining to/yelling at Koby to teach him about Tinker in Legacy. :) This keeps coming up on The Source and on Twitter and would make for an interesting long discussion, potentially with decklists and anything else interjected for entertainment purposes. I've thought long and hard about unbanning certain cards in Legacy, and Tinker is one that doesn't deserve to be, in my estimation, so it would be fun to have podcasts about such topics.

<sigh> Tinker ... the Show and Tell and the thing you drop off the Show and Tell in one card.

I still think Tinker is less egregious than Show & Tell in Legacy right now. All the answers I got back from the Twitter question "what's the most broken thing you can do with Tinker in Legacy?" were "turn 1 robot". Each color (except maybe green, boo-fucking-hoo) has ways to deal with Turn 1 Tinker plays:

White: StP / PtE
Blue: Chain of Vapor / Steel Sabotage / counters
Black: Duress / Thoughtseize / Inquisition
Red: Pyroblast / REB
Green: "Crop Rotation", see below
Lands: Maze of Ith

Nevermind the mechanics of playing Tinker on turn 1 require:
1 artifact
3 mana

The easiest way to do so is with Sol-lands, Chrome (Mox) Diamond + fuel, and Tinker itself. This leaves you with three cards, one being Force of Will and the other being a blue card in an artifact heavy deck.

It's certainly a strong play, but I don't think it's as "zomg so broken" as people are making it out to be.

SPINEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!! For another SPINEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!

Sundering Titan seems like a pretty savage beating.
Blightsteel is still pretty dumb when backed up by free counter magic.

The real wang in the eye is that you have ~7 slots free since you don't need to waste 10 spots on bombs. You need like 3-4 slots for bombs, you can also Tutor Tell one bomb into another bomb. You can still play the same dumb counter magic. Your worst cards will be your accelerators like Grim Monolith or XXXXX Wellspring.

I still put Desire ahead in degeneracy.
