View Full Version : Themed artwork should be more relevant to the art of each culture

Morning sourcers!

I was taking a look at Theros artwork and it got me thinking that It would be better, since WoTC uses aspects of different cultures, to

actually see something relevant to each culture instead of a complete mishmash. I am not talking that much for the actual history of each

portrayed nation, as connecting the game to reality would make it lose it's actual "magical" theme, but about the artwork itself.

For example, when a set has a, lets say, Greek, African or Japanese theme, then, I think, it would be awesome to see artwork that ACTUALLY

represents the art style of each nation instead of some anime and computerized crappy images. Have you, for example, seen real African art?

It's magnificent and I would really like to see it in a future set (since both Greek and Japanese themes have failed, art-wise)

P.S I really hope that WoTC will stop using computerized images for artwork and make them look more like paintings. You know, like the old days when the cards had a unique "touch".

I think art is a good way to quickly identify each Card. i dont care at all what else goes on there.

I care what the Card does.

end.

The only problem that comes to my mind is finding artists relative to each art style. other than that you just print the cards normally. It's not a unique technique after all.

Also each set having a unique style will make identification easier. To my eyes, at least, the new artwork makes the cards look the same. in the old days I could even figure out who the artist was. I cannot do it anymore. Everything looks the same.

Sorry, but I'm a bit confused by this comment and I find it completely unnecessary, esp. as I work in polygraphy for 15 years.

Yep, new art is mostly fugly and quite unrecognisable.

Yup, and Word of Command looks a lot like something you might find on antique African vases, walls, etc.

More or less, I'm honestly not that concerned with a card's printed art work - if it's that horrendous I'll just have to alter it.

I still am able to point out a Neilson card and I seem to have a good eye for Jason Chan. My favorite artists though were usually distinctive like Neilson and Rebecca guay
