View Full Version : Card Damage in Sleeves

I'm posting this for a friend who doesn't have an account.

Recently he noticed an entire deck that has been sleeved with Channel Fireball sleeves, as well as a deck sleeved with KMC Matte sleeves have markings on them. He's not sure if it's gunk on the card itself (possibly rubbed off from the sleeve or even gotten into the sleeve somehow) or if the card has been rubbed off from frequent shuffling. It's on the front and back.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? Still unsure whether it's stuff on the card or stuff rubbed off of the card. My guess is it's from the shuffling.

Sounds like he doesn't double sleeve them.

Yeah, sleeving them once won't protect them from long term damage.

Same thing has happened to me. It is from shuffling. You need to double sleeve to prevent it.

Thanks everyone, I'll let him know. I expected as much but never had that problem myself.

More specifically, it's from dirt entering the sleeve from the opening, then through shuffling smeared on the faces of the card.

use matt finish sleeves, your cards do not slide around as much, the ones I got are so tight perfect fits do not fit inside them but they fit inside the outer sleeves they make so those are double sleeved that way.

I do triple sleeve my EDH and vintage though with these (http://www.amazon.com/Sword-Art-Online-Sleeves-Guards/dp/B00BKRKMCI/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1384110951&sr=1-2&keywords=outer+guard) and pink dragon shields and perfect fits.

If this is it, does anyone know of any solvents that are safe for magic cards but good at getting rid of dirt? There are plenty of basic lands to experiment on.

You can try diluted rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip, and see how it effects the ink on the cards. I haven't tried it, but light pressure and a mild solvent can theoretically remove some dirt.

ive used a Q tip and Water - for the easier stuff

and Q-tip + handsoap for the tougher stuff.

tips: dont use force/pressure, and only apply to front and back of Card - older Cards like duals will soak up loads of Water on edges.

I would try that on a worthless card first, though.

I don't know if this is 100% accurate but I recently started riffle shuffling my standard decks and I did notice very similar wear on my cards that mirror your photos. I double sleeve my legacy decks and never riffle shuffle them so I can't really tell if this is what caused it on my std cards. My std decks are never doubled sleeved but I also never noticed this problem before.

So you may want to see how your friend shuffles. I am curious to know if "riffle" shuffling can make them show this kind of wear quicker or if im just playing with my std cards more without double sleeves and not noticing the wear previously.

He says he riffle and side shuffles them mostly. About 1 tournament (FNM I think) per week with them. That doesn't seem like that much to me, but I guess double sleeving is the best option, especially with expensive cards.
