Quite a few packages have already gone out, and mine is going out tomorrow, so it seemed like the right time for this.

Brag about your Coal Golems here.

Extremely cool present just received!! Sorry, couldn't wait another month to open it. It combines two of my favorite things: really good chocolate and old bordered magic cards!!!

Some highlights (all German): Fastbond, Stifle, Duress, Daze, Price of Progress. Also Beta basics of each flavor! My cube just got a huge jumpstart!

Thanks to Einherjer, and Merry Christmas!

Received today! I thought I would be noble and wait until Christmas, but that package was starring me down. I think I made it 10 minutes before I broke :)

(excuse my potato camera, Christmas may fix that problem!)

(Unlimited Rares: Lord of the Pit, Cockatrice, Armageddon, Aspect of Wolf, Balance, Braingeyser, Demonic Hordes, Dingus Egg, Elvish Archers, Gaea's Liege, Hypnotic Spectre, Jade Statue, Lord of Atlantis, Personal Incarnation, Rock Hydra, Smoke, Volcanic Eruption, Warp Artifact, and Zombie Master!)

This is a freaking sweet haul! It helped round out a ton of rares I need for my Unlimited collection and finished my Goblins and Elves decks! Loving the S+T Chinese as well as Japanese cards, they are pimp as hell!

My Santa left a note that said he was my SS last year, so that should mean it was Picc! That being said, I wasn't sure if that meant that they were the person who received my presents last year, so that would be Gnuhouse! One of you need to confirm so I can give you an internet high-five.

This was well past my expectations. Thank you for an amazing present and I hope you and yours have an excellent holiday.

Yeah, this was me. Glad you love the gift. Since your gift last year was pretty frickin sweet (tons of sweet Russian EDH stuff, plus a foil Sad Robot and 2 foil Zendikar fetches!), I wanted to make sure you got something equally sweet. I had wanted to get all the foreign stuff in the same language but I found sourcing it to be a little tough.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Well now that is deffinately worth the inter-net-high-five. And nice to see that good things come full circle.

not really. was just an excuse to go buy more cards. im an adult with a real job. + or - $50 is not even noticable.

do you get angry when you give xmas gifts and dont get the exact same amount in return?

btw great pics so far, super psyched to get my package >.<

Nope, I look forward more to giving away stuff than I am receiving. Makes me happy finding a good home for cards I don't use. The only thing that would anger me is if the person didn't even try to put together something decent.

If you're upset about getting less than you give away, you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to have fun with the event -- and as cheesy as it sounds it's better to give more than it is to receive.

For me its all about what I can give, from artist altered playmats, duelist life counters, once even power. I always try to out do myself every year.

This year I recieved an epic pack with Vampiric Tutor and a playset of from the vault dryad arbor a pair of kikis a fetchland and a whole pile of other stuff. Ifeel bad kinda since I didn't alter anything.

My question to all of you guys who participated at this would be: Aren't you somewhat pissed when you get less value in than you gave away?

Not really. I mean, I know how much I spent and how much time went into gathering the stuff, and I also know how much pleasure mini1337 got out of the package. If my Secret Santa can match that part, then I'm okay. It's not so much the money as it is the tme, effort, and thought that goes into it.

That being said, I've been good this year, so if it's a package full of Coal Golems.....

If this is what your getting out of it then your doing it wrong.

There is no real way to describe to someone who does not understand the joy of just giving a gift to another person without thought of reward.

it is the same feeling I get when I find a family who has nothing and my family can help them out during the holidays, we may not know them but to know that we brought joy into another persons life even for a few mins. Well that is worth every dime and every second spent doing it.

From your statement it makes me think your either a young teen/adult, and you have been either spoiled or disappointed every time you ever open a gift.

When it comes to legacy as well $100-$150 in cards is really nothing. My collection fluctuates by $1000's per year and the boom in magic has been very kind since I have collected since 1994. This is a card game meant to be played first and foremost, the actual value of the cards does not concern me until I have to buy something for a new deck.

It's not about what I get, but who I'm giving to for these kind of events(I see a lot of you guys like brothers). I'll be honest. I'm giving to a member I have never seen as he's a 2013 account. Last year, I gave a solid package to an active member that majority of us know. However... I'm doing my best to find some of my victims difficult wants. Wouldn't be possible without my connections, more or less. Is it as "expensive" as last years package? No, but I'm putting more effort into getting his cards than I did last year.

I'm just worried that this being his first year, he wont be satisfied with what I'm sending him due to high expectations.

A gift or a present is an object given without the expectation of payment. Although gift-giving might involve an expectation of reciprocity, a gift is meant to be free.

Go start a trolling circlejerk or sky-is-falling thread somewhere else.

@Gnuhouse: Your gift 100% made my day. I'm super into the Magic 94 format, so now I have excuses to play ridiculous cards! I think I am going to build Lord of the Pit Kobolds or something equally hilarious.

First and foremost, Dan I'm glad the package made it there and you liked it all!

To the question about gift giving: I truly loving giving gifts more than receiving. As long as it is the minimum and took a little thought then that is all I ask. I am not rich by any means, but I play an expensive format and have some amount of disposable income, so I did what I could afford and my wife added the creative art touch to make the gift personal. That is what I feel should be expected out of secret Santa, do what you can and care. If it is all about the money, and you don't love giving gifts, then just buy your own cards and don't participate.

I think that, as long as it's noticeable that you've put in some time in order to make this a pleasant encounter for the recipient, he will get satisfied.

I know I would, at least :)

If you send out $100 worth of cards and the person shipping to you sends you $15 of played commons and uncommons, yeah, that's really shitty, but it was a risk you were willing to take by virtue of signing up to participate. If you're not willing to make that gamble, no one is going to force you to take part. I mean, even in a local, face-to-face SS there is no way to guarantee parity between your gift and the gift the other person is giving you unless everyone agrees to spend a set amount ahead of time.

Past Source Secret Santas have shown that the Legit Participant to Moocher ratio is very good for an online event. Last year, very few people didn't get a package from their Santa, and I sent packages to most of those people after the New Year started (a backup Santa also sent out a package to someone). I also sent out something to a person who didn't get anything off his wish list and barely got the minimum gift amount, though unfortunately I don't have the resources to do that again this year.

tl;dr not getting exact value or better is a risk you take in any Secret Santa.

Personally, yes, I'd expect to get useful and valuable cards that I otherwise wouldn't acquire because they're either niche or too special (like alterations), not some shit like Vorapede and Spelljack. Like I said, I don't buy this 'I have fun giving away free stuff to unknown people'-thing and therefore I think that a lot of other people have similiar expectations. The last two packages seem like major disappointments. Is that the point?

I agree that the most recent package is indeed nice but only because of how much effort these alterations require. However I still think that gifts like this one are rare exceptions while the majority still just loads off the crap they don't need anymore. This monster gift aside, I do think we need a blacklist, sadly. I didn't participate this year, because of last year's disappointment (although backup Santa was great). I don't mind getting less than I gave away, but we agreed on some terms (minimum value, Legacy playables) and these should be valued.

My victims cards haven't been sent out, still need to receive my orders and all.

I'll admit, I was kind of let down just a tad, but I enrolled in this year to gift something that's on my victims difficult want list, or close to it. Not receive something that's going to blow my mind. However, last year I got a badlands, along with some other awesome german stuff. My mind was in AWW for how generous my SS was.

I'm not going to publicize who sent me the cards, I feel like a message to a mod is suffice.

I'm just happy I got this package over someone else receiving it.

If you are more worried about what your getting instead of what your giving. You missed the whole point of Secret Santa. Now if someone sends a truly shitty package then yea, but like I said before do not be expecting Russian Staples and shit, heck if all I had got was the play-set of Dryad Arbor I would have been super excited just to get a gift. I do think we need to make a list of those who broke the rules (min $20 legacy staples, or didn't ship)

If you are that disappointed just don't participate next year. But you may miss out on the maple flavored japanese Brainstorms next year (I had some cards out kids had pancakes on the same table cards look fine but have a maple smell to them, not sure if they really are maple flavored.)

If your that sad about what you got send it to me and I will send out new packages to people.

Everybody just needs to relax, that's all it is. At the end of the day, most people get good gifts, and overall this is a very fun activity that I think brings mostly good times.

I've received a number of complaints about packages this year, so I figured I'll post post this now:

1) The gifts that generated the complaints have all come from people who have been on the Source for more than one year.

2) A couple of the people with complaints associated with their gifts this year participated last year and their gifts did not generate complaints at that time.

3) I have no way to screen long-standing members without an honor system. Anyone can have a rough year, anyone can give a bad gift out of the blue. I would ask that you not participate if you don't think you can gift well, but I can't do more than that.

4) As much as I would like to ban from participation people who are known bad Santas, right now there are exactly zero people who are repeat offenders. I am not going to ban people on the basis of a single gift.

That said, there have been people who have volunteered to send to those who have received...less than what they hoped for. While I'm not particularly comfortable with handing out people's home addresses left and right, if your gift is below minimum value or just generally against the spirit of a Secret Santa, contact me and I can put you in the queue for Bonus Gifts from volunteers.

Are these legit complaints or people butt hurt they didnt get altered/japanese/beta high end staples. I know I didnt send out a ton like I usually do but it was at least $100 worth of singles.

I think the problem is that so many people made these ridiculous wish list instead of keeping their list inside the $20 range. I knew there was going to be complaints after seeing all the ridiculously stupid wishlist asking for Japanese and Russian foil staples, it is teh reason I ignored my person's wish list all that was on it was Japanese foils. If the only thing you ask for on your list is a pile of $50-$100 singles prepare to be disappointed.

This thread used to inspire and make people want to join in on the fun. Now I feel it's a witch hunt and I am scrambling through my binders just to fill up the value of the package these last days not to get banned. Kinda takes the fun out of it.
My work is done.

To be honest, I'm of two minds on this issue:

When people send me pictures of their gifts and a complaint, the first thing I do is check their wishlists. I have basically zero sympathy for someone who asks for Japanese foil this and German shiny that, then complains when they get a reasonable amount of mid-value cards in English. On the other hand, some of the gifts I've seen might - might - comply with the letter of the Secret Santa by meeting the minimum value requirement using TCG player mid-prices, but it's very debatable whether they meet the spirit of the event. That said, I don't want to be some independent arbiter of what constitutes a Good or Bad Gift, since that not only sucks the fun out of the event but leaves me in the uncomfortable position of making awkward judgement calls about other people's generosity.

If I had dictatorial powers over this event, I'd run it the following way:

1) The minimum shipping value is $25 using TCG mid-prices. Subtract 10% off the value of each card that is played and 25% off of each that is heavily played.

2) Maximum wishlist request values are $200 total, again using TCG mid-prices. That is, if you are asking for specific cards X, Y, and Z, the total price tag of cards you're asking for can't exceed $200. This counts both language and foil/nonfoil. The exception to this is if you say, "I'm playing Deck A, send me anything out of that" without asking for specific cards.

3) No individual card on a wishlist can exceed $75, accounting for language and shininess. If you ask for two copies of a $75 card, you will only have $50 left over.

4) You are required to get the person to whom you're assigned at least one card off his or her wishlist. The sole exception is if your giftee is asking for two $75 cards and a $50 card, and you don't have the means to get any of them - then I'd reassign you as long as you contacted me ASAP.

5) Gifters are welcome to exceed the value of cards on their giftee's lists by upgrading the language and/or foil status.

This would make it easier for me by reducing complaints, but I suspect people would by unhappy about having to conform to it.

Anyway, I would like to remind people that the purpose of the Secret Santa isn't to try to value trade with people, or engage in some prosperity dick-measuring contest where the pimpest gift wins Christmas. It's to have fun giving things to other people, which sometimes involves sending cards on their wishlists and sometimes involves browsing their post history to see what kind of decks they like to play and then maybe sending them something sweet for those decks as a surprise. I really, really don't want this to devolve into a lot of people being mad about not receiving sufficient value because at that point it's probably best to just not run a Secret Santa on the site anymore (keep in mind that adding extra layers of screening increases the amount of work I'm volunteering to do, and I'm not getting any compensation for this - I don't participate in my own SS and don't expect people to send me cards).

I also think that having an actual "wish-list" would be a nice addition. Some people are of creative mind/talent, while others aren't. It can be frustrating and lately as it seems, down right scary, to search, pickup, and ship out package not knowing if the person receiving is going to drag your name through the mud based on not getting something from their magical dream world. There are a lot of lists up on the thread but there are also a lot of "I want X foils or foreign cards" and have fun, with nothing to really build off of.

A little history there. The playmat was commissioned at SCG St. Louis by a guy named Blake Meade who doesn't do alters anymore. The Grapeshot was signed by Bryant Cook at GP Indianapolis. The Tendrils of Agony was signed by Tomoharu Saito during GP Denver.

I got my gift in the mail this weekend!

http://oi44.tinypic.com/k4e4c8.jpg

I apologize for the blurriness, but well, all of my cameras are terrible. Quick list:

1x City of Brass
1x Mother of Runes [German]
2x Stoneforge Mystic [1 German]
1x Grizzly Bears [4th edition FBB I think, Korean maybe? Regardless, it looks pretty sweet. Will use for tokens.]
1x Chittering Rats [Altered for Secret Santa]
2x Chocolate Bars

Was pretty excited to open this, since I have a huge a sweet tooth and I wanted stoneforge mystic really bad since it's one of my favorite cards. The chocolate was a really nice touch; I really didn't expect anything other than cards in my package this year. Downside? Pretty much this. My wishlist had some high end cards, but most of them were low-end (at least when speaking of Jap. things... but c'mon, Werebears, cycling lands and such are not that scarce...); but in fact what I'll be extremely surprised to open are the basic lands I wished for. And some gifts from heaven are considered like calamities from hell by foreigners (Just try to eat Munster or Epoisse)...

ANyway, i'd like to try it (Isn't it like some roasted potatoes??).

Its more than that.

It's potatoes turned into Angel fingers shaped French fries.

Fresh and consecrated cheese curds made from the milk of holy cows.

It a gravy that the recipe is kept secret and was the main reason the NSA started tapping into our conversation/emails.

Maybe, MAYBE! one day, you shall be worthy enough to know the secret of this recipe.

Is the secret maple syrup? Or do ya'll just put that on your grits? Because obviously everyone eats grits.

The haters really make me sad. The majority are getting exactly what they wanted and a vocal few are repeatedly shitting on it. People need to stop trying to ruin Christmas.
If people have a problem with the gift they receive (under the minimum), they should contact a Mod or a Secret Santa organizer. If you don't like the gift someone received, and it's not yours, keep it to yourself.

I'd add the following in the rules of secret santa for next year:

- Add a sample of the worst speicality from your country in the package!!

I am pretty sure it is against the law to kidnap Tea Party members and ship them overseas.

The great thing about the gift is that it was packaged so you had to read a small note before each card or group of cards… so for example before Squire there was one saying ''Stoneforge Mystic!'' and then smaller: …but Cursed Totem is in play (hope you can read all of them)… I had so much fun going through the packages. Thank you again and merry xmas to both of you. I love the playmat!

It may be worth noting that the USPS is slow this time of year. My sister sent a two-day shipping package to me and my family that was supposed to arrive Wednesday, but hasn't left the warehouse in Philly at all yet.

Take that info into consideration if you're wondering about when your SS gift should show up, they're just hella backed up at the moment. :)

The point is you only participate if you can afford Legacy cards. I'm a cold hearted piece of shit, but yeah, buying people nice things feels great! Not to mention there are a lot of participants who aren't exactly strangers at this point. I bet you get mad every time you do laundry and don't find a random $20 in a pocket.

I originally wanted to do a story using cards (in addition to what was there) but got lazy and settled for just the ones you saw. I think the Hammerheim one was my favorite.

Yep, I'm just scanning!
To be continued...

EDIT: Well, using the first Austro-Hungarian steam scanner is sooo agonizing...

Santa assorted a gift FOR ME which was mistakenly opened by MY WIFE!

I found a Christmas greeting... in Czech!
There was a foil Young Pyromancer with a small set of (also foil) toys of his: Forbidden Alchemy, Steel Sabotage and Dispel.
Rumour says that there was a kitty (foil Steppe Lynx) following the Pyromancer, but it must have been Schrödinger's lynx.
I was given an Ensnaring Bridge, too. Looks like I should build Stax again? Oh wait, it's for the Spagetti monster?! Fine, fine...
Ha, the kitty is found, my daughter took it and with a "meow, moew" sounds hid the lynx in cat's basket.

And now... Santa together with one of his elves (who in fact is a human, but ssh!):

http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff388/aleksandr4/SSS_zpse68795a3.jpg

(Sry for the potato scan...)

Thanks to Tylert for SSS gift! I did expect a Werebear or two, but fact is that Noble Hierarch opens many new possibilities (one of them white, the other a blue one), moreover she may attack under the Bridge!

Merry Christmas!

It took 14 days to arrive...
I wish i had more time to alter things... I had planned to alter another non-foil young pyromancer along with a syndic of thites to play the elves roles... but it took me already some time to succeed in finalizing a decent Santa !!

Forgot to post that I shipped out a week or two ago. My victim should have received by now as well. The package I sent was quite boring from me this year but I did get something from my victims wish list so hopefully they are happy.

@Higgs: Glad you like the package, I put quite a lot of effort in gathering all the goodies needed, but in the end it was definetly woth it

Also, I actually received my package almost a week ago, but couldn't post picture right then, so I'd like to say a big "THAN YOU" to my own Santa, who just went over the top!

Will post pics later for sure!

No pics because, well, just a Horizon Canopy, use your imagination.

Still, no complaints, thanks Santa!

You're welcome man. I went through your wishlist and found some fun gadgets for your EDH and Legacy/Modern-decks. Hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas!

I'm quite proud of my alters, first I've ever done, do post a pic so the folks can see them =)

Took me a bit of time, been busy and the camera on my phone isn't great, but here it is, blurry as hell, but you can see it :) :

Wow, just wow. You also got one of my favorite forests in German. I probably would have splooged everywhere if I got that package.

Man that sucks so hard!
My first Secret Santa and someone steal my gift!

In the pack were a set of Veteran Explorer, some SCG tokens (Turtle 1/1), some foils foreign (french+german) Storm Crows ;) , 1 foil Unhinged Plains + other foils (Gitaxian Probes, Ratchet Bomb (in spanish), Spell Pierce + some random foreign foils)... Not the pack of the century but I'm sure you would have liked it!

I am really sorry dude!

Some good news - the police found the luggage , mostly empty, except a few clothes and a torn open envelope with some cards remaining. Wet and slightly damaged, but I got the Explorers, the Turtles, storm crows and the foil UNH plains. :) Thanks Monkey Island :)

I just received my Secret Santa package! Since I'm having a big casual night with my friends tonight I wanted to open it now so I could use the new goodies before moving out to Denmark for my PhD. Thanks a lot GaronaDro, the package is awesome :D. Also, the note said that a second package will arrive somewhere in the coming weeks, so that's even more awesome. Photobucket is bitching me, so I'll upload the picture later. It contained:

- Foil Kodama's Reach
- Steam Vents (RTR)
- Genesis Wave
- Avenger of Zendikar
- Azusa, Lost but Seeking

I love the foil Kodama's reach, will instantly replace the boring cultivate in my lands EDH. Finally I can replace some of the hidious proxies and play with proper cards ^^. I'll be looking forward to the second part!

I was pleased to see a package from my Secret Santa in the mail today. Here's the loot!

http://electricjellyfish.net/images/secret-santa-2013.jpg

(For those who don't want to stare too closely at tiny writing, that's 4 Japanese Goblin Lackeys, 14 Unglued Goblin Tokens and one each of Rock Lobster, Paper Tiger and Scissors Lizard. The Lackeys and tokens will give me a nice start on my Japanese Goblins deck, and the Rock/Paper/Scissors trio will make a nice addition to my pauper cube.)

Thanks Secret Santa!

I must say my SS's has a good taste:
Hurkyl's recall from AQ - Been looking to trade for the third one from AQ for quite some time (need it for modern - yes I know, AQ and modern, the irony..). Now that burden is lifted from me.
UN Island - first UN island that I own, will put it to good use :)
Foil Delver - you Sir just might have convinced me to finish my second set now
Chalice of the void - well, technically that's my 10th Chalice that I own, but I'm a stompy player at heart, so I don't mind
Set of jap Elves - will find home in my pauper elves deck
DCI counterspell - nice find
Signed Sol ring - that is just sweet, especially since it has a story behind it

So thanks a bunch shipshay.

Really glad you like them! I was pretty worried about your gift at first because I wasn't quite sure how I was going to do it since nobody I contacted could do alters reasonably cheap/quickly, and I had never done any card alters before either. In the end I decided to just give it a go and was very happy with how these alters turned out. It was pretty fun too.
