So, I just played in my first SCG Open, and happened to do well.

infact, well enough for this to be a thing:

http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=61241

Anyways, so for the last week I had been fretting with my sideboard, and generally freaking out. Not to mention I helped out a few friends/acquaintances with the deck (Stephen Bush I actually helped with completing the deck the week before. He's a decent player, and I am happy for him)

Anyhow, on to the dramatic back story.

Wake up at about 5:30, and walk outside to hear the lawn mowers of the nearby college playing a perfect fifth. I would normally be angry because the lawn mowers aren't supposed to be that loud, but perfect fifths are a nice way to start a morning.

Get on BART (my local transit) at around 8:00, about 35 degrees off. Twist, the doors won't goddamn shut. T.T . Takes about 5 minutes to get the doors shut, and off to Downtown Oakland!

Arrive at the convention center, check if they have any Kiln fiends (they don't. D: ) . Talk to my friend, and learn his housing situation suddenly changed, and he was quitting magic in order to get money. I was going to play the 4th karakas, but I figured its home would be better with him, as he needs to money more than I do.

Anyways, players meeting. Sit across from the dashing David Ochoa, compliment him on his moustache. Off to round 1!

round 1: Enchantress
I don't remember much from game 1, other that swinging for exactsies with spellskite, mother of runes, and a thalia on the board. He had a blood moon out (apparently tech for Death and Taxes)

game 2 was a little bit more interactive. He gets sphere of safety, elephant grass, words of war, solitary confinement, and sterling grove out. He sacrifices his elephant grass and his solitary confinement. With double flickerwisp in hand (and an active jitte), I flicker his sterling grove end of turn, and flicker his sphere of safety during my turn. I then give my Thalia +2/+2 and my spellskite +2/+2 with jitte, and swing for game (he was at 4)

1-0
2-0

round 2: Goblins (Marwin. Awesome name!)
game 1: he goes lackey go. then turn 2 siege-gang. brings the quick scoop.
game 2: I get an active jitte, not much he can do.
game 3: turn 1 lackey. I stp lackey. turn 2 lackey, I don't have the stp. He then gets siege-gang...again (it was a singleton).

1-1
3-2

round 3: Omniscience show and tell
Game 1: I get an early vial, and by the end of the game have thalia, mangara, spellskite (which he did try to kill me through), and three active rishadan ports. I eventually beats him down to 0 with my shennanigans.
Game 2: Early ethersworn canonist, followed up by a thalia and a tutored up oblivion ring. I also get a mangara out for good measure, and there was not much he could do. he cunning wishes for that split-second bounce thing. He gets my canonist, but fails to draw a land that he needs in order to kill me.

2-1
5-2

Round 4: Blood moon stompy
Game 1: my opponent mulligans to 4. I don't know what he is playing, but I figured big red or some other variant. I bring in my ensnaring bridge, pithing needle, etc. I can't remember what I pulled here (jitte and a revoker i think)

game 2: He gets a turn 2 koth. I get a turn 3 ensnaring bridge, and follow it up with a mangara. He keeps on looking for answers and finds none. He deals 17 damage to himself over the course of the game. Eventually I swing for lethal with spellskite equipped with a sword of fire and ice, under ensnaring bridge.

3-1
7-2
Opponents killed with spellskite count: 2

Round 5: Sneak and Show
Game 1: I recognize this opponent locally, I just can't remember his name. Really nice dude, and we both complain about how homophobic competitive yugioh is, as we have both played it. I remember he plays esper stoneblade, so I mulligan accordingly. Turn 3 sneak attack kind of seals my fate here.
Game 2: I start getting fliers equipped with batterskull after revoking his sneak attack. These fliers proceed to trade with his griselbrands, while I have a phyrexian revoker equipped with sword of fire and ice, and a pithing needle naming griselbrand. He has a bloodmoon out, so I have no outs to the emrakul plan. He draws emrakul, and I celestial flare it when it blocks. He pyroclasms. I have revoker out, but go for the kill with style points with spellskite equipped with batterskull
Game 3: I get a hand with ensnaring bridge. Auto-keep, as this deck literally cannot beat it. show and tell turn 2, into ensnaring bridge. Spend about 10 minutes fighting through my opponent's dumb pyroclasms -.- . Finally win when I get a spellskite

Opponents killed with spellskite: 3

4-1
9-3

Round 6: Punishing Nic fit (Joseph Valentine, I believe is his name)
Game 1: He talks about how he no longer has much time for a smoke break with his new deck (he is sitting next to his friend). I am under the assumption his is on miracles, so I keep a hand with thalia, vial, revoker, mangara, karakas, rishadan port, wasteland. Luckily, that hand is also good against Punishing nic fit. He goes for an early grove after a turn 1 top. I wasteland his grove after it hits one of my dingles (I believe I topdecked a stoneforge mystic). I then topdeck spellskite, and another stoneforge mystic. Revoker comes in naming pernicious deed, and I get a sofai on revoker. Spellskite redirects a few removal spells, and then I swing for lethal.
Game 2: Similar to the first game, but much grindier. Eventually he is able to crack a pernicious deed for 3 mana, getting one of his veteran explorers to trigger. However, I am able to abuse lots of mana better than him by locking him out of black completely. I then keep on trying to beat in with batterskull, mangara, and stoneforge mystic. He keeps on topdecking threats. Eventually he gets a primeval titan. I crack my horizon canopies. Draw into stp and spellskite. play both. Equip batterskull to spellskite. He pumps spellskite with kessig wolf run for lethal.

5-1
11-3

After this round, I decided I wanted something from the vending machine. So, I went to go buy a bag of pretzels. Buy the bag, but the fucking thing gets stuck in the machine. This would foretell next round.

Rug Delver (Big Jerk Face):
Show up to the table. Opponent seems nice, and then he procedes to talk about how he lost his win-and-in against joe lossett through bullcrap.

Game 1: He mulls to 5.

Game 2: Topdecks a lucky sulfer elemental into lightning bolt to break my boardstate. I had lethal the next turn.

"blah blah blah. I only left with a one hundred dollar bill. BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. WHINE WHINE WHINE. CHEESE CHEESE CHEESE."

This goes on for 3 goddamn games. The guy was a total asshole.

So. End of game 3, he has tarmogoyf out, I have rest in peace out. I am at 1 life. My creature is spellskite with sword of fire and ice and jitte equipped. he ponders. Finds nothing. Shuffles. "OH MY FUCKING GOD, THIS DECK. IT HATES ME. I SHOULD HAVE TOP 8d, I JUST LOST THIS GAME BECAUSE OF BAD LUCK:". Ponders again. Shuffles. Complains even more. Keep in mind this entire time I am half his age, trying to calm him the fuck down, and being polite (offering to get time extensions for him to get his attitude together. Keep in mind I am one turn away from getting out of bolt range and wrapping this game up promptly).

then suddenly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdVbfq1Bgks

exclaiming how good of a magic player he is. He then procedes to rub it into my face that he won. what a fucking asshole. I was really bumbed, as I have been working with my deck for the last year, putting all of this effort into winning things, only to be fucked over by an asshole with a lightning bolt.

5-2
12-5

opponents I should have killed with spellskite: 4
Opponents I wanted to punch in the face: 1

round 8: Death and Taxes

my opponent decide to play it out for the glory of top 16, but split our winnings between the loser and winner, so it is truly a game about fame and glory, and the winner does not feel bad. He saw what happened last round, and was a much nicer opponent :D .

game 1: He gets a game loss for having sideboard cards in his main, after calling it on himself.

game 2: I get spellskite-mommy lock, serra avenger, and phyrexian revoker naming umezawa's jitte. He kept in his thalia, which I kept on bouncing with karakas. Pretty one-sided, especially when I flickerwisped his aether vial.

6-2
14-5

Overall:

Left the place $75 dollars richer, but down a karakas. Return my friend's miscut plains, and then went back to my hometown with my friend dara who waited out the rest of the day seeing if I would top 8 (what a sport), and who also brought me an ensnaring bridge last minute. Thanks dude! Got delicious Panda Express (yeah. I have good taste in food /sarcasm ). Got into top 16, and got my decklist posted. A few other people in my playgroup got into top 16 as well (3 of them into top 8).

Also, shoutout to local regular Jonathan White! He rocks Doomsday all of the time, and I am very sad he didn't top 8 on tie-breakers.

Props:
Top 16
$75 bucks (I got an a hundred dollar bill)
Feeling like an adult, because I filled out my first W9
Killing people all day with spellskite
Topdecking lucky all day (except against rug delver)
asshole opponent losing win-and-in.

Slops:
Jonathan White not getting top 8
Losing to asshole on Rug Delver
lackey into siege-gang. Was awesome to see, though. Remember, ALWAYS STP Lackey.
Not getting top 8 (oh well, can't have everything!)|

BTW! Please convince me to play your deck of choice. Kind of tired of Death and Taxes and want to branch out a bit. Stuck between BURG Delver and BUG Delver, and possibly grixis delver. I don't have any interest in DRS midrange decks at all.

Right now I am leaning towards BUG Delver, but I am going to build stiflenought first, because that deck is hilarious.

Nice job! Sounds like Spellskite had a busy day!

Yeah. He had his morning coffee, and was all ready to go. He's a french spellskite, so I was very happy he wasn't waving the white flag of surrender!

Awesome performance, sounds like a fun day.

The closest I've come to going to an SCG was Buffalo (wife forgot to renew our passports) I actually had Countertop Terminus built before it was a thing.

How did you like manriki?

bUrg is my main deck right now, its "roguish" enough to be off the radar. Just how I like it.

Maybe french should have raised the flag of surrender during the american revolution... you'd be english and therefore more polite :)

Ok, that was a bad rant :)

Congratulation on top 16.

I didn't need to side in manriki once. It was good in testing. I am of the opinion people should just blow up equipment and race, which is exactly what manriki does. Will be keeping it for a bit.

Yeah, rogueish definitely appeals to me. Send me your list :D ?

That Bonfire video is great. Sorry about that dude's topdeck.

I was watching SCG's coverage for some of this event. Was Jonathan part of the match that drew themselves out of top 8? I think the coverage indicated it was Table 2? The commentators were implying it was a risky draw.

Nice report! Sorry to hear about that asshole, I've sat across the table from someone like them more than once. My advice: don't put up with their shit, and especially don't try to get an extension (or any other advantage) because they can't act like an adult. It's a card game, not some life-influencing event; people (ideally) should play to have fun, not so that they end up bitching the entire time. Props to you being the bigger man; I probably would have kept it as cool as you did.

EDIT: fair warning, if you start playing Burg, monov, the rest of us will have no choice but to tear your manabase apart. :P

Lossett's counterbalance is different from other people's counterbalance, his doesn't need SDT. He's nice to other people to accumulate good karma, and he can just blind-flip to counter in return.

If you care so much about Doomsday not getting into top 8, perhaps you can give Doomsday a shot.

Congrats on the finish! I'm your round 1 opponent who got blown out by Flickerwisp capitalizing on my play errors. Hopefully I'll have a chance for revenge at one of the upcoming Vintage events in Berkeley or Vacaville.

Thanks! Don't worry, I'll probably end up losing to you in vintage :P ! You were a pleasure to play against. Your play was safe, under the assumption I didn't have double flickerwisp. You most definitely did not misplay.

congrats on a great first open! Don't fret the dudes with poor attitudes (they tend to not have much else going on in their life).

I will recommend bug delver or some type of variant, i love it ;D

Congrats and thanks for the report!

As for deck choices, I'd recommend TES. Bryant Cook says there's a little card called grapeshot for guys like that rug delver player.

Congratz on the fine result!

BUG Delver I can definitely recommend. Great fun to play and can beat anything (apart from Imperial Painter...).
Yesterday I tried it at a 90-peeps tourney and I was very pleased with it.
Especially going fetch-sea-deathrite, he goes bayou-deathrite, I go Hymn (hits his only other land) disfigure deathrite. He fails to draw another land, I waste his bayou and cast Lily. See ya!
