View Full Version : Countering TNN

So with tnn becoming such a thing and some decks best or only option is to counter it, what counters could be put into a side board to counter it, because out of the typical delver counter package only daze and Force of will hit it as Spell Pierce and Spell Snare miss and daze is easily played around. Or do you believe the stock counter package is enough to hopefully win the counter war when your opponent plays true name.

Infest is a very good answer against True-Name Nemesis.

bro tip: make them overextend and then wipe their whole board for maximum enjoyment

I think you may be confused, I'm wondering solely about an actual counterspell for tnn, not a "counter" to it.

EDIT: If you're wondering about a particular Counterspell that's useful against TNN and what I assume would be noncreature cards, that is a tough one.
Things that are good against a naked TNN:

Innocent Blood
Liliana of the Veil
Smallpox
Terminus
Pernicious Deed @ X>=3
Toxic Deluge (aka the new Firespout)
Infest
Targeted Discard
Counterspells

Things that are good against Batterskull and SFM with TNN:

Stifle (on the SFM EtB trigger)
Terminus
Pernicious Deed @ X=>3 (or X=>5 if ya really want to hit the Batterskull)
Various removal that works on artifacts (on the Batterskull)
Null Rod (against equipment in general)
Pithing Needle (against Stoneforge and/or Batterskull)
Targeted Discard (including Therapy when they fetch the Batterskull/other equipment)
Counterspells

REB and Pyroblast are fair against it.

Blind Obedience/Imposing Sovereign + Meekstone!

I know, it isn't a counterspell, but it's a pretty big combo against a rather large part of the current meta. It stops both the Elves glimpse combo and their Progenitus back-up dead in it's tracks, and the same goes for TNN, Delver, Goyf, Nimble Mongoose, merfolk once they a few lords on the battlefield, Sneak & Show, Reanimator. The combo isn't getting that much attention yet, but I feel that it's certainly worth it.

Well since you cited Delver decks in your OP and 90% of Delver decks seem to play red I think the answer you are looking for is Red Elemental Blast.

All blue decks with a black splash dont need to counter it because they have removal like golgari charm, zealous persecution or toxic deluge.
So because of your question i suppose you play rug, uwr or bant. For the tempo decks you have REB, Pyroblast or stifle/Wasteland + Daze or FoW and thats it...
If you run bant well than you have only fow and more creatures with equipment to race him...

The question in the OP isn't that confusing. He asks for spells to COUNTER TNN, not for things that can deal with it. Essence Scatter / Remove Soul isn't Legacy playable..

Aside from Daze and FoW (and the obvious choice Red Blast / Pyroblast if you run red) there isn't really that much I think. You could try Force Spike because he costs 3 or the actual Counterspell (Mana Leak if you have trouble hitting UU).

Nymphetamine, your question seems a bit too narrow. Maybe you shouldn't ask which counters are good against TNN, but you should start with a question "which counters are good?". so far there are not many real counters played, some of them are soft counters, some of them even can't hit TNN (Pierce, Snare), etc. So while your qustion might be answered by a list of three gajillion blue cards from Gatherer, I think you didn't ask for that: e.g. Dismiss is not what it was.

So, basically make a list of useful counterspells, there isn't that many of them, then check which one may actually counter TNN.

solid choices
Daze (though conditional, but w/e, every card is, see below)
Force of Will (needs blue)
Counterspell (needs UU)
Counterbalance (needs deck)
Pyroblast/REB (needs red)

less solid choices
Venser, Shaper Savant (not really counter; may trick with equipments in case you draw him late)
Mana Leak (meh)

fun choices
Memory Lapse (there should be Daze-like or FoW-like Lapse, though)
Remove Soul (well...)
Mindbrek Trap (wins counterwars, but there must be one at first)

really fun choices
Desertion
Absorb
Undermine

honorable mention
Forbid (needs LftL)

Massacre is a card missing from the list! One of the best cards to deal with truename against stoneblade decks. Free mana spell against true name is pretty awesome.

Probably because Massacre requires the True-Name player to control a Plains. Not that that's uncommon, but if they don't it's an overcosted Infest.

IOW that's 'Stoneblade tech' but not 'TNN tech'.

Not even kidding - I wonder if it's time for Bane of the Living to step out of the shadows. Morph needs more love; we should all be playing more Exalted Angels and Bane of the Livings and really I just want an excuse to have two playable Morph creatures in the same deck. That's supposed to be the whole reason for the mechanic in the first place, right?

You: "StP your face-down creature"
Me: "joke's on you, Frontline Strategist goes farming"
Y: "fuck okay, untap draw… hmm I guess StP this other FCD?"
M: "WHIPCORDER SON"
Y: "GOD all right fine, w/e, untap draw, play a Forest"
M: "cool, attack with this guy"
Y: "w/e"
M: *flip* "BAAAAHAHAHA GRINNING DEMON SAY RELAX"

Only with good cards. vOv

I'm kind of serious about BotL though. It can -2/-2 all the things, and then untap and live to tell about it. You get to keep your other 3-toughness guys too, like um… Vampire Nighthawks? :(

Maybe like a Black Demon Stompy buid of some kind? I do like Bane of the Living though.

Sudden spoiling (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=376529) should work against true name nemesis, not to mention its uncounterable

There's that Declaration of Naught card. Is that strictly worse than Counterspell though?
