Storytime!
A week ago I got nominated for 2013 Best Legacy Strategist on MTG Salvation... then 2 days later I find 3 spam infractions on my account and that I've been suspended. Since I was now suspended I wasn't allowed to vote for myself. But they told me my eligibility for contest was fine. So a week passes by and I find out I actually got more votes than anyone else, so I should win right?
WRONG.
Galspanic the site admin does an "investigation" of each person who voted for me, and according to him, he finds a reasons for each person for why their vote shouldn't count. Apparently the guys in my Legacy playgroup who lurk the site aren't allowed to vote for me because they don't post enough.
"After discussing it, we have opted to disqualify your nomination this year. The purpose of the Forum Awards is for the people on MTGS to vote for their picks. While these 7 guys are members of the site, the location and lack of activity makes it look like you got the local guys to vote for you and only 2 actual Legacy users did. I'm sorry, but that goes very much against the spirit of a Sub-Forum award."
So congrats to whoever won, sorry I don't mean take anything away from you, but it is necessary for me to vent because I'm no good at keeping this stuff in.

I forgot that forum existed. Everyone there is really stupid. Glad someone randomly told me about the source so I never got too involved with that community.
I've gotten approximately 12 Infractions for random things that I people wouldn't even blink about on there...
Infraction for using the term retarded: "SnT is not necessarily the problem. If WOTC just would quit making retardedly busted permanents every set it would be fine."
Infraction for spamming because I quoted a post a post and said: "this. so hard"
I guess I deserved the one where I called a guy a fuck face.
And my very first one was for calling out a guy for trolling: "Trading at my LGS is like playing Jeopardy... Right. Bad troll is bad. Yet this person is so retarded his trolling is actually working... "
That place is a joke and the admins are nazis
Edit: also told someone to go die in a fire. I guess that one deserved it.

To be honest its not a big deal to me. I was surprised I got nominated, and it was nice that I got votes. But really whether I win or lose isn't the hot topic, but just the extent of how far they would go to engineer the results of the contest.

Calling random people retarded, fuckfaces and to DIAF...yeah, sue them for trying to not have a toxic community. I'm not suggesting that The Source needs more moderation, but you don't really sound like a paragon of good behavior to be annoyed at another community's attempt to clean up your act.
That award situation is fucked up though. Give them the bird and move on. I'm just sad they have the best sources for spoilers.

I was banned for threatening a ripper. It was an offhand comment that I deleted immediately, but anyone watching the thread would have seen my post. A mod saw my post and I was told that the local police and FBI was alerted to my threat and that they would be contacting me. I appealed and my post that was live for not even 30 seconds was enough to ban me for life. I couldn't help but find the whole process amusing.

Yeah, to be fair, some of that behavior would get you a warning here too.
The bottom line is this: the admin staff here doesn't care about cursing or insensitive parlance per se; we care if you're directly insulting or attacking other members. The former is not a hindrance to productive discussion, the latter most certainly is. In short:
"that's retarded" = okay
"you're retarded" = not okay
Both are in poor taste, but hey - you're in good company.

My second infraction, I got for posting: " Are you done being combative?" to some deuchebags picking on dice_bag in the modern forums

MTGS is a casual forum. Nothing more.
I hear ya,
I picked up a permanent ban for doing absolutely nothing wrong. I bought a playset of Japanese Jace's on MOTL, the guy stopped responding to me and the cards hadn't shown up for nearly three weeks. I opened a complaint with Paypal, then immediately received a PM from the guy telling me to drop the PP dispute. I told him I'd drop it once the cards arrived, he flipped and told the mods who promptly banned me. The cards showed up about a week later, I dropped the dispute and was permanently banned from Salvation because the MOTL ban stuck and they automatically ban anyone banned on MOTL.
Ridiculous, but the forum is garbage anyway.

Yeah I know at least one of my responses was towards that idiot in the Modern forums. Honestly I feel no remorse. Most people on there that I respond to and get infracted for it are either really extremely stupid or asshats. I told the guy to go die in a fire because he said he knowingly tells his opponents that they can draw into top 8 with him while knowing they cant actually get in. I dont just randomly flame people for no reason.

The OP's story reminds me of Irish referendum on entry into the EU.

The userbase on Salvation is drastically different than that of the Source. The users tend to be much less sophisticated about Legacy, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its place.
I use it primarily for the Rumor Mill and the Market Street Cafe, and to read general information about trends in other formats so that I can grab Legacy crossover staples when necessary. I will try to encourage newer players to play Legacy if they are looking into it for the right reasons. There are certainly some good posters on that site, and it has the benefits of encompassing a larger and broader range of Magic players.
That being said, it is not very useful to discuss specific Legacy tech on that site, especially in comparison to the Source, and the individual deck threads are not as useful as their counterparts on this forum. Too much of the discussion that would otherwise be useful gets drowned out by total newbies (how many times do you have to read "netdecking" on a forum about competitive Magic), and a significant number of the moderators are way too overzealous at what they do (although many of them do a very good job and I commend them for volunteering their time).

I think the modern sub mods in particular are very trigger happy with their infractions of legacy players. Someone will often post questions like "modern or legacy"? in the modern sub. Some modern player will reply that legacy is just turn one combos and basically a coin flip. Then, someone will call them out on the ridiculousness of their post, and the person who is using a completely rational argument will eventually get infracted for "bashing modern".
The only "useful" (and I use that term loosely) thread on the MTGS Legacy forums are the Un/Ban discussions. Useful in the sense to gauge how less competitive think about the format. Useless in the sense that users think Gush is not going to cause any trouble, nor Necropotence is too good because "life for cards LULZ you lose to Burn faster!!".

To be fair, quoting someone and adding "This." adds absolutely nothing to the conversation. You could always elaborate on why you agree with them, or perhaps continue the argument of whatever you are quoting.
But yeah, I'm just annoyed at general when people quote an entire post and don't add anything at all to it. Just takes up forum space and like 5 spins of my mouse wheel.

If we're looking out for our mouse wheels, the first order of business would be to remove the signatures. These easily take up more space than the posts themselves.

At least signatures here are neat, text-based compositions. I judge my forum's validity by the amount of huge, colorful, animated signatures rampant throughout conversations. The amount of "I am x/y" or website banners at the bottom of each one word post over there is a nogo for me.

technically I am basically bumping that post because I am in agreement, and if I am in agreement with a post, why should I need to elaborate further? I mean in the end, who cares, I just think that implying that I am spamming is pretty stupid.

I think everyone likes signatures since it's fun to know a little bit of the personality behind the poster. But if even 5 people just quoted something and said "This." in a thread it would be the most obnoxious thing ever.

I judge the crap out of message boards based on what they allow for sigs. On MTGs there are a ton of extremely long and obnoxious ones. I like The Sources sigs policy a lot.
Here's the first one I happen to run into while looking for an example of the kind of ridiculous sigs I am talking about (no offense to the poster, and fellow legacy player):

used to be a rule years ago that no more than 4 lines of text and a fixed size banner. I used one of the lines to link to my Blog where I had my decks, trades, etc listed. It is so far out of control it make sit hard to use. It is why when I received Harm's Way to spoil, I spoiled it here instead of there. Ended up with me not receiving any spoilers since though.

What. Who got 2nd?!
Also, the only good thing on MTGS is the modern section (there are like, 3 people who actually know jack shit in that section. So I generally just go directly to them), and the Death and Taxes thread. I still have no fucking clue why that thread isn't more active here (I am kinda at the point where I don't normally go to threads for DnT, as I am confident enough in my deck knowledge to know EXACTLY how to play.)

The sad thing is the Modern section here is pretty similar to the Legacy section there, with a bunch of trolls popping in to just start shit and leave. "LOL Have fun with the banlist n00bs!" is equivalent to their "Legacy is 100x more expensive than standard!!"
The modern forums there are pretty great actually. I'm sad to see so much animosity from our Legacy crowd in our Modern forums.

Don't worry or care about what anyone thinks of you.
The most you'll ever be able to do in your competitive Magic career is to do the best you can. Your peers will respect and admire you more for who you are and how you play as opposed to winning contests.
