View Full Version : Setting up a stream?

My GPU died yesterday (most likely it's the VRAM, but I still have warranty on it), so I'm going to build my new PC now instead of spring.
With my new PC, I might consider streaming some MODO Legacy sooner or later. I assume a i5 4670k is enough as CPU for streaming. What kind of upload is required, though? What kind of programs do you use to record the entire thing and stream it on Twitch?
I have a single-monitor setup.

1) Depends on the GPU, for example, all of NVidia's GTX 660+/760+ come with software called Shadowplay. At the moment, this doesn't record audio or stream (for now), but it does allow you to record gameplay in full-screen mode;
2) The i5-4670k is perfectly fine if you get the NVidia GTX series GPU as mentioned above - if you don't, then I'd consider looking into the FX hexa- and octo-core processor from AMD or the i7-4770k for streaming. At a guess, most people will use FRAPs or DXtory, which need a fair amount of upload speed.
What's your budget and the max resolution on your monitor?

Resolution is 1080p. I just want to if streaming is doable with my planned setup. I don't want to spend extra money just to be able to stream.
I'm currently leaning more towards an AMD R9 280x, although that's still not certain. I'm not too concerned about the budget, but that's what I'm aiming for.
The i5 4670k is already set in stone. I don't pay 100 extra just to stream since the 4700k has no other benefits for me. And the FX series still lags behind Intel in terms of single-thread performance in the current generation.
I'm probably asking Julian what he's using in terms of upload for his stream.

The best streaming software out there is Open Brodcaster Software (http://obsproject.com/) (OBS for short). I used several different free versions including XSplit while it was still free and OBS blew the all out of the water in terms of how little of a footprint it has. If your new PC is in the $1000 range it should be able to run OBS quite fine.
For upload speed, you pretty much need at least 1Mbps for any kind of decent quality. You can set your bitrate in OBS and it should be 25% of whatever your max is. Sorry I can't be more specific; Google shows plenty of guides/videos but I can't open any of them at work.

Thanks for the advice.
I have already ordered my parts. i5 4670K + MSI R9 280x is going to be it.
I don't remember the exact numbers and can't look it up right now since I'm at my parent's house during the holidays, but I have at least 2 Mbps upload. I guess that should be enough.
I'll look further into it in February when my work isn't as stressful.

Hi Matthias,
I'm replying over here so everyone can maybe draw conclusions from it as it seems streaming Legacy is something that's becoming increasingly popular these days.
My connection is 50.000 kbit/s (1&1) and my hardware is as follows:
INTEL Core i5-3570K 4 x 3,40 GHz
nVidia GeForce GTX660 Ti, 2 GB DDR5
I can't really stream at 1080 so I usually turn it down to something like 7xx and set the frames to 24/s in OBS. There's lots of other ways to adjust your quality in OBS, which is an incredibly good tool for streaming, so just give it a try. Also let me know once you start streaming, I'd be glad to join. You can find me on http://twitch.tv/itsJulian . I will be doing a lot more of streaming in January again! Maybe we can do some gauntlet sessions?

Thanks, Julian.
What kind of upload do you have with DSL 50000? I "only" have DSL 32000.

It says "up to 10.000 kBit/s" which is about 1,22 Megabyte per second. Those big marketing numbers generated by using kb instead of kB are really stupid.
Can't really test it right now as I'm at work though.

Dependent on quality, but any upload speed higher than 1mb/s should be all you need for a stream. I would call your network provider and see what they have to say on it personally as normally if you ask the right person they can play with your ports and up your speed. I did this for BF3 to lower my ping and up my Uploads. I find the people on the end of the line are quite helpful and enjoy talking to people who understand tec talk.

I don't want to open a new thread, so necroing ftw!
Since there's finally summer vacation, I'm interested in setting up a stream now.
I'm currently working through this guide and I'm stuck at the sources. (http://help.twitch.tv/customer/portal/articles/1262922-open-broadcaster-software#Getting%20Started%20and%20Setup)
What I don't get is why it shows a black screen on the stream preview if I try Game Capture with MTGO as source.
On another note: Where can I get a nice-looking stream UI?

Running into the same issue when I try Window Capture. Monitor capture works but its a huge hassle.

I had the same problem. I ended up sharing a whole monitor (I think you can also do a smaller area of a monitor if yours is big enough and you want to run some stuff in the background) which worked much better.
The new client has many different windows which , I would imagine, makes is difficult for OBS to detect.
I would REALLY suggest picking up an older second monitor or small TV so you can have OBS, chat, and any additional windows on the 'bad' monitor and then run MTGO on the one you are sharing.

Getting a 2nd monitor helps you out SO much. Really, I have no idea how the hell I was initially streaming with just a single one. I know have 3 and sometimes even wish I had four.

The new MTGO client is at fault (naturally). You have to set it to capture in a very specific way, but I don't remember how since I don't stream MTGO. I bet someone will tell you or you can find it on google.
