Chains hovers around 250$ maybe even more. Why is that? Its not particulary playable in Legacy afaik and doesnt seem too exciting in Commander or Cube, so what is the reason, just rarity?? Although its one of the more flavorful and pretty cards out there in my opinion.

Fairly rare and saw a recent price bump due to Waste Not's announcement.
It was a $30 card 2 years ago :\

Speculators?

I don't see what Gatecrash added to make the price skyrocket.

I purchased 2 NM English Chains a year and a half ago, one at $50 and one at $60, to play in my 5 color shops sideboard against Griselbrand Oath. When they initially spiked to $100+ a piece, I sold them thinking it was just a fad in legacy and would drop back down soon.

Nope :frown:

I believe the first boost was due to it showing up in some Jund lists, but it has been slowly climbing since then.

Because its price was manipulated some time last year.

because it's satan in goat demon form holding chains ... telling you to shove your cantrips up your ass ... and reserved list legends rare ...

This. Demand for it hasnt changed but there were probably a handful of dudes that bought up as many as they could a while back.

You can blame nedleeds circa 1995 partly for that one .......

I'm sad I only managed to get one before it spiked, plus right about then I had to give up my quest for a 4x Legends set. I did get 3 Nether Voids though.

I have actually never run either card in a deck, although both were loaned to a friend for his mono-black EDH deck once upon a time.

That's exactly what happened.

There are countless cards that have a ridiculously inflated price. Some may argue that its because of the rarity, or age, or whatever but then there are always cards that fit in those categories that disprove the logic. It seems like who ever controls the secondary market (starcity) just arbitrarily chooses a price for most cards based on their faulty speculation and a magic 8 ball.

Scg had nothing to do with this one.

Remind me of the guy that sat next to me at GP Paris. He had flown over all the way from Canada and wasn't aware of how Sylvan Library and Chains of Mephistopheles interact; he was running both in his deck.

The card has a very cool art and name. And most of the people want it to work. But in the end It's just a sideboard card..
Not worth the money. I Would rather buy other Legends cards like moat, karakas, tabernacle, sylvan l, void or abyss.

you can basically get a playset of chains for 1 tabernacle

Perhaps this card cards price skyrocketed for legitimate reason, who really knows. I was just stating that for some cards there is no logical reason for drastic price changes.
