Remember this guy from GP Richmond?

Looks like he was banned for 18 months for his little stunt. Does anybody know more about it?

I don't know anything about the banning, but here's a link on the incident: http://happyplace.someecards.com/29863/one-heroic-man-documented-every-exposed-buttcrack-at-the-biggest-magic-the-gathering-event-ever

Isn't it a bit hypocritical that this guy gets banned, but Wizards prints cards like this? Fat Ass.

Ctrl-F "banned". He doesn't say much about it but it's definitely confirmed at least.

I want to make a petition to penalize players with bad odor. Seriously, this should be under distraction.

I mean, do you know how hard it is to concentrate when half of the room is stinking up the place.

Helene mentioned why pretty much the moment she commented on the case on Twitter. On a second instance this is bad advertising for MTG overall. (Edit: i'm not talking about those guys in particular, but the impression this accident gave to the average joe about players).

Don't ban the guy in the picture alone, ban the jackass who made the photo first

With all the branding work MTG Madness is currently doing (you ain't seen nothing yet), it would be awesome to release an eau de toilette.

Who's Helene?

Anyway, I'm not sure if it's the right message to send that it doesn't matter how inappropriate you look (and smell) when going to a MtG tournament. This wasn't a setup, it was documenting what was actually happening.

Does it smell so bad that it forces your opponents to concede before they vomit?

I remember only 2 rounds where the odor was not nauseating. This is more of an issue than people's cracks. I couldn't care less if my opponent wasn't wearing pants, but the smell is what gets me at these events. Sure the place is warm and ass juice becomes a factor after an hour of sitting, but is it too pc to say something?

If someone is going to call out people for appearance at majors events, I'd much rather see them shaming the people wearing offensive/sexist tshirts/attitude/etc.

If I took pictures of people wearing shirts like that would I get a suspension too?

Who's Helene?

Helene Bergeot, Director of global organized play at Wizards. She commented on the case immediately and reminded players to remain the Code of conduct at tournaments and later showed her dusgust for harassment and bullying.

Here was a bit of misinformation in this thread. The guys in the picture were not banned, but only the guy who put the pictures in circulation.

After the doctor8sides case I would have been really surprised if the outcome was something else. I like this course of action and I would be okay if the penalties for cheating in a tournament were longer bans too.

Then again I play only in mtgo and all this doesn't affect me at all...

Sharpened
03-26-2014, 08:46 AM
The main difference I think is the dr8sides thing was mean-spirited. I don't think this was particularly.

Here's an interview with the guy: http://sperlinggrove.blogspot.com/2014/03/conversation-with-crackstyle-creator.html

Look, this did damage to the Magic brand on a public scale, so a banning is not surprising. But using words like "bullying" to describe it seem disingenuous. The lack of commentary, the lack of deliberately trying to identify those who's cracks were exposed - this doesn't have the attack aspect that the word bullying implies.

I think part of the problem is the official response is very short. I would have liked to see an explanation that went into depth and dealt with the fact that the motive here didn't appear to be cruel, that people should try and make sure they do not expose themselves at Magic tournaments, and that while this was unacceptable, there is a greater understanding of what happened then simply "banned!"

Barook
03-26-2014, 08:58 AM
I don't think it was meant to be mean in any way - just some dudes having fun.

He still has a fair point, though:

That's a very fair point. I didn't mean to portray the community in a bad way. On the other hand, people coming into events and seeing this type of thing isn't very inviting and comfortable either. The community of Magic is largely an amazing group of people. However, within every group of people is a much smaller group of people that present the community in a bad way as well. Whether it be the guys that make fun of new players for using Lava Axe which makes them not want to come back to a LGS, the guys who have naked anime characters on their sleeves/playmat that make women not want to play or the dudes that smell badly and make people not want to go to a certain store. I think that vilifying me is easier for a lot of people than realizing that they might have something to improve about themselves for the community. Not to take the blame away from myself, but that's how I feel. It's much easier to criticize someone else than yourself.

Instead of crying foul, said people should get their shit together and not show their asscracks like any decent human being.

What gets me is that as I understand it, these guys weren't participating in the tournament when this occurred. I had heard they dropped some time earlier and were just wasting time waiting for a carmate to play through. So this could very well have been perpetrated by outsiders, those without DCI numbers. What response would have been taken then?

No, two different people.

dr8sides snapped photos, then insulted the people in them directly.
The asscrack guy provided a visual commentary without directly identifying the individuals.

I do see a big distinction between the two, and don't agree with the length of the ban for the latter. However, I also recognize that WotC needs to do this as a way to protect its brand and set a tone for what is acceptable reporting/social commentary, and what is not. They clearly don't think that this incident is acceptable. As they are a private company and sanctioned events are a small facet of the overall game, there's not much to worry about.

TL;DR: don't be an ass.

Sure, these people fall under their target demograph, but it would be better for the game as a whole in the long-term if you reduce the number of disgusting people to an absolute minimum.

while I'm chiming in, there's a wider definition of bullying at work here. Magic players in general need to open their minds about gender, stereotypes, explicit and implicit power dynamics, and leading by example…

Well I guess I'm pretty lucky..my community is a fantastic group of people. Legacy is around ~16 people and modern ~30 people. Great bunch. Polite, fun and good sports. Occasionally there's one guy who rages like a little bitch when he loses with burn but he's getting better and hasn't for a long time. And what's up with sexism? How does this even occur? I mean, sure it's a male dominated game by a long shot and if 1-2 girls show up you notice but nothing more than that. Has anyone witnessed any sexism in their community?

Alex Bertoncini was suspended for 12 months and later had six additional months tacked on for being humiliating people (dubbing over an SCG open) on his stream.

This buttcrack photographer got 18 months total, the same as Dr8Sides when he did the same thing.

He got 18 months. Appealed it down to 12, claiming he was needed for a team event. Then got the extra 6 added back for the stream.

You feel offended because you are playing a game involving loads of people for whom the only sport of the week is to actually enter a room to play cards? C'mon, get a life! He's just like the one he's making fun of. If you feel uncomfortable about this, maybe you should start moving your own ass and get back in shape a little bit more (no need to look like Apolo either, eh?).

WotC banned the guy more because they do not want to have this image (of the fat dude with the asscrack shown to the world) pinned to their best cow than because you guys complained a bit about it.

Around here, who are the players enjoying the beautiful view of an asscrack when you pass the door of a shop or a venue to take part in a tournament or an FNM? Seriously?
He isn't and decided to turn it into a joke. Voilà!

I'm sure it's real funny if you weren't targeted. It's the same bullshit bullies hide behind: "dude, it's just a joke! Lighten up." No, that isn't the case.

No one enjoys the asscrack hanging out view but humiliating people on the Internet because they haven't noticed yet isn't appropriate. Talk to person: "hey, wanted to let you know, you should pull your pants up." If you can't be an adult about it talk to a judge and the judge will take care of it for you.

I also guess that asking a judge to ask another guy to pull up his pants is TOTALLY the way to go. Just in case I did not want to humiliate him. Good call.

We can all be adults. Yes, this is not very nice. And yes, I do find this funny to some extent. Sorry about that.
Next time we'll see an asscrack, we'll all be adults, talk to the owner of the butt (be it a guy or a girl), think about this conversation and if it has to come to it, we'll call a Judge.

I'm a 6'0" 125lbs effeminate white guy who works with a bunch of Colombians for forty hours out of each week. So, please, tell me more about being the source of someone else's amusement. Humor will always be found at someone else's expense. We're not all the same, but deep down inside we are all assholes. I'll fully admit the guy is probably at the top of the totem pole in terms of assholes, no one takes it this far and forcing the joke has in fact made the subject flat out dull, but the initial photos from GP Richmond were hilarious to many. And if you weren't a part of that "many", fine, but don't be incredulous. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" or however the quote goes.

This, if we were really going to be adults about it, the issue wouldn't even exist in the first place because people would wear their clothing properly.
