Realms Uncharted

This Green instant was patterned heavily after Gifts Ungiven, even down to it's art. It's effectively a draw two lands for three mana instant, which no one is excited about, especially given that the lands in question will be the worst two of the four you pick after your opponent reduces your options.

The reason I'm bringing this card up now is the advent of the Thespian's Stage/Dark Depths combo. With Petrified Field, you can guarantee you'll get at least half of the combo in your hand.

This isn't quite at the power level of a Witness/Snapcaster/Unearth/spell you actually want Gifts pile, but if a card similar to Petrified Field is printed, we're starting to get there.

In Vintage you can get a Ghost Quarter/Wasteland/Strip Mine/Petrified Field pile. In Legacy you could grab Wasteland/Ghost Quarter/Rishadan Port/Petrified Field (or Tectonic Edge or Encroaching Wastes or Dust Bowl) for LD functionality. A creature pile might look like Mutavault/Mishra's Factory/Blinkmoth Nexus/Inkmoth Nexus.

Given just how many nonbasics WotC has printed over the years, and how redundant many of them are, at what point does Realms Uncharted become a viable play in Legacy or even Vintage?

Or does the Depths/Stage/Field/X? pile make playable already?

I can't see this card getting played in Vintage unless you're in a field of control decks, and at that point only if you are making a strenuous effort to stay out of blue.

In Legacy there's more of a chance, but you still have to compare it to Intuition and Gifts Ungiven. I also think this card is going to be restricted to a Loam shell. On top of that, you have to ask how often you're going to want four different lands. Crop Rotation, Knight of the Reliquary, Gamble, Entomb, Living Wish, Exploration Map, and even Into the North have all seen Legacy play in the past year due to Thespian's Stage and the changed legend rule. I think if WOTC prints more lands that win the game directly or indirectly (maybe something like Maze's End), then there would be more of a reason to tool around with Realms Uncharted. If that scenario happened, though, it probably would be most playable in Modern.

Probably intuition is much better:
getting all combo + LftL
its blue - pitch to fow

enough said :).

You're probably playing this in a loam deck. The only time I can see this really being better than something like Intuition is when you want to get four lands instead of three or if you want to go mono-green.

Yeah, I just see Intuition trumping it in most decks that would run this type of card.

It is unfortunate, because I think this card is super duper sweet. But Intuition being able to basically triple tutor by finding loam + 2 lands just seems so much better. Of course you could have it with like Crucible on board and it becomes extremely good then. IDK. I would toy with it a bit, but dont be surprised when it is underwhelming.

I could see Realms as a fun-of in a lot of non-blue based Marit Lage decks (RG, Mono-G). The problem is that it probably functions as a slightly worse Crop Rotation 5+.

It might be feasible to run it as a kind of deck thinner to set up some kind of combo with Recross the Paths or Goblin Charbelcher.

In many decks, you could do some kind of two duals/two fetchlands thing and guarantee yourself two useful lands.

In combination with Fluctuator and four different cycling lands? (You'd obviously also want Life from the Loam.)

Maybe there's some use for fetching four artifact lands?

I like the Fluctuator + Loam + Urza cycling lads idea the most. But the trouble is: you'll have pretty nice draw engine (that is weak to DRS) while you'll draw into more fluctuators and Realms and such. Any idea (other than the obvious DepthStage) what to do with the engine and what to draw, etc.?
