How do people generally play when there are Deathrites on both sides of the field? It seems there are a lot of factors at play, e.g. who is the control role, if they have Tombstalker/Tarmogoyf in their deck or not etc.

I think it makes sense, in general, to just use your Deathrite to neutralize theirs. Thoughts?

Too many boardstates to consider to give an answer

Agreed. There is no set rule. It's up to your ability to figure out the board state and whether you need the mana, or you should be cutting off their mana. Or if you are low on life or they are or something like that.

Simple rules about using mana ability:

If you have mana and opponent is short on it - play control role - block opponent shaman.
If you don't have mana and you need it - try to overplay (use end of turn, then again in your turn).

Same with abilities.. depends on life total and board position, and knowledge about opponent/your hand/deck.

Usually I start by Disfiguring their Shaman, then I go from there.

Isn't this a prime example of "Who's the Beatdown"?

If you're playing the aggro role, play DRS aggressively. If you're playing the control role, play DRS to that end. Don't put peanut butter in your chocolate and try to own the game with the wrong tools for the job.

You can always play elves to ensure they never get a deathrite activation again

Even if you are the aggro role, it doesn't do much good to be attempting to drain at eot. They get the drain and then you can untap and drain, but they can do the same.

Seems to me like eot drain is only good for keeping graveyards empty.

And yes, removal is obviously the best answer. A close second is to play elves cuZ you get to play 12 drs
