As announced on Pro Tour Journey Into Nyx stream:
Theme: Mongolian; home of Sarkhan Vol.
Release Date: September 26th, 2014
Lead Designer: Mark Rosewater
Lead Developer: Erik Lauer
Size of sets: large, small, large.

As quoted from the stream, they are "bringing back something old that [we] have been asking for for a long time, and something new that [they] have never done before". Does the former mean Fetches? What about the latter?

My prediction is Snow Lands, and some sort of Snow Dual (although probably not with basic types).

Hopefully storm gets reprinted as well as flanking

Considering WotC dislikes the Storm mechanic, I doubt it. But if a Storm card were to be reprinted, I'd call Dragonstorm in set 3.

Julian23

They have stated that Storm was too much of a mistake to bring it back. Onslaught Fetches would be super awesome...and also show how reprints actually increase the prize instead of a card.

People have been bugging rosewater about dragons in sets where they make no sense, like innistrad, and the response is that mouth-breathers looooooove dragons so goddamn much there has to be one in every set unless r&d has a good reason against.

All the dragons are dead = set without a dragon.

SNOW lands GO.

Time to obsolete ABU duals.

would love to see that and i reckon is a real possibility.
Would be a HUGE business movement by wizard bringing a lot of players back in legacy, woudnt damage the currently underpowered standard format and would give modern duals that they dont do damage to the controller.

Barook
05-18-2014, 04:42 PM
Snow duals don't work under the current definition of the Rerserve list, just like legendary Duals. Adding a subtype would work. But they're going to do jackshit in that regard anyway.

Rosewater & Lauer in the lead again? Oh boy, I sure can't hold my excitement after Innistrad and Theros!

Fetches are still going to take a while to reprint, according to an interview at the end of April, so I doubt that could be it. New thing they've never done before? Probably another, glorified kicker variant. Or other crap in the league of flip cards (see: Innistrad).

I am fairly confident the "thing players have been asking for but MTG has been without", will be a wedge themed block. The set is a bottom up design, casuals get massive nerdrections for multicolored stuff and the art shown has a very clear BWR look to it; both the pallet and characters depicted look very BWR. All the evidence supports a wedge themed block.

Don't expect fetchlands, Forscythe recently said they will reprint them eventually, but not anytime soon.

For the "thing we have never done before", it probably has to do with the "unique block structure" which I don't know for sure what it entails, but the fact that there are no dragons on the plane anymore, but the last set is called Dragons of Tarkir makes me think there might be some sort of change from the normal chronological story telling. So, Dragons of Tarkir (and possibly the middle set, Warlords?) will take place BEFORE the events of Khans happens.

For me, it makes more sense for them to reprint fetch lands whenever we return to Zendikar block (or whatever is left of it). Wedges would make sense to me for when we go back to Alara as well.

Or they just bring back dragons with a plot device - see Zendikar with the Eldrazi, Innistrad with the angels, or Mirrodin with the Phyrexians.

But all of those things are minor as long as they can/can't deliver a decent set/block.

A wedge-themed block would finally give us official names for the wedges. I mean, I'm sure that BUG, RUG, and Junk/Rock would still be used but I think whatever names they give to the names of the WUR and WBR wedge Khans will stick.

Something they have never done before? I bet they are going to make a new Super Nova Mega Ass Rare where you get one Super Nova Mega Ass Rare in roughly ever two booster boxes that you open. Such fan favorites such as Gofy, Force of Will, and Wasteland will be found at this new rarity.

Wow, a Mongolian-themed block? Are you kidding me? For the first time since Future Sight, I may consider purchasing a display. Or... maybe even two, if the set will be nice.
Woolly ponies, cavalry archers, bronze helmets... my eyes get slanted even more! This could force my father to try the game!

Oh, and I like your ideas of what Khans may or may not bring back, but you're all wrong. It won't be snow lands, it won't be fetches, it won't be triples.

I hope this block has some epic flavor text:

From the King of Kings of the East and West, the Great Khan. To Qutuz the Mamluk, who fled to escape our swords. You should think of what happened to other countries and submit to us. You have heard how we have conquered a vast empire and have purified the earth of the disorders that tainted it. We have conquered vast areas, massacring all the people. You cannot escape from the terror of our armies. Where can you flee? What road will you use to escape us? Our horses are swift, our arrows sharp, our swords like thunderbolts, our hearts as hard as the mountains, our soldiers as numerous as the sand. Fortresses will not detain us, nor armies stop us. Your prayers to God will not avail against us. We are not moved by tears nor touched by lamentations. Only those who beg our protection will be safe. Hasten your reply before the fire of war is kindled. Resist and you will suffer the most terrible catastrophes. We will shatter your mosques and reveal the weakness of your God and then will kill your children and your old men together. At present you are the only enemy against whom we have to march.

Mongolian. Wow, I would never guessed that this would be next.
I guess Flanking would make sense somehow.
Banding would be insane. :P
Horsemanship never made any sense flavorwise since it doesn't interact with Flying.

I don't like Large - Small - Large. I certainly hope they won't bring Eldrazi-shaped Dragons in the third set. But the theory to make the third set a prequel could be right.

Onslaught Fetchies would be nice, although Modern bustes all the prizes. But they are lacking in the Modern format, it seems incomplete without them.

For me, it makes more sense for them to reprint fetch lands whenever we return to Zendikar block (or whatever is left of it). Wedges would make sense to me for when we go back to Alara as well.

Onslaught Fetchies have not much to do with Zendikar. And I don't think we can go back to Zendikar. The Eldrazi destroyed it or whatever. It's a actually sad.
Wedges are not Shards! As far as I know wedges are the enemy color three color combinations. Also I don't think it would make sense to go back to Alara (at least not in the next 10 years).

They can jam fetchlands into whatever set they like. That's why the names are generic.

And Zendikar isn't destroyed, it's just currently overrun by the Eldrazi. Wizards wants to return to this world sooner or later, considering it's popularity. This year, we hit the 5 year minimum period of time that has to pass before they revisit an old world. I wouldn't be suprised if we got "Return to Zendikar" as the next block after Tarkir.

As far as fetchland prices are concerned - sure, the Onslaught fetchlands would initially go up, but let's not forget they would be reprinted en masse with a way larger print run than during the Onslaught days. In the end, they would settle lower than before as long as the print run is active.

I wouldn't mind some 'official' names for the wedges, in the same vein as the Alara Shards. I like the Apoc names, don't get me wrong, but whereas one is more likely to say "Bant Control" or "Grixis Storm" or whatever - those are more or less made up - we don't hear people labeling Delver builds by "Ceta / Ana" or what-have-you. They just haven't stuck. I tried googling around to see if those prefixes were relevant to the Invasion books, but I didn't find anything. Meh.

I had a guy at work telling me about the speculation surrounding this block. I would really dig seeing Flanking on some creatures, and I would especially love to see it trickle down to Eternal. Flanking, besides just being awesome because it is awesome, is tech vs all kinds of 1-toughness creatures that think they're hot shit - especially since it does not target and therefore cares none about protection. See my sig for brutal MWS example.

It also paves the way for one of my favorite tautologous Magic cards -- Cavalry Master! "Other creatures you control with flanking have flanking." OF COURSE THEY DO

I know I know, it stacks. It's just awesome. I wish more abilities worked that way, where more = better. It'd be like, if you could give something flying twice, and then creatures with one instance of flying couldn't block it any more, because they don't fly as well. Sucks to be you, Tombstalker! My White Shield Crusader has SEVEN INSTANCES OF FLYING. It's not even on my playmat anymore, it's all like ____-_

"Dega Something" anything would be better than "Team Italia". In fact I hope this gets pushed for this reason alone.
"Necra Loam" or "Necra Lands" or something like that.
"Raka True Blade" => RTB: there...That many layers of extrapolation should successfully keep Legacy deck names completely incomprehensible to outsiders.

Indeed, this would apply a nominal amount of vegetable-based spread to my single serving breakfast confection. Though it usurps my preferred Sliver combo of Sidewinder Sliver and Hunter Sliver and/or Two-Headed Sliver.

Fortunately, the last "provoke as removal" guy they printed like was like a 2/2 with first strike for 4W, so unless they've gone entirely bat-shit they wouldn't put them on the same card. Be a lot cooler if they did though.

Well, I liked Zendikar, too, at least the first set and the explorer theme.
But I wonder how WotC want to do the return to Zendikar storywise. That the Eldrazi somehow lost interest and disappeared or that somebody/something defeated them or put them to sleep or what? Everything that comes to mind would be pretty lame.

I kinda wish we could use these names instead of the stupid acronyms we are stuck with. The standard "name" for UWR seems to be American. So, for example, UWR Delver gets referred to as "American Delver." Y'know, because Red/White/Blue are the colors of the American flag. Which, to be fair, can also easily apply to a number of other countries whose flags are those three colors, but I guess the US gets priority because that's where most of the players are.

Dega seems to be stuck with Dega, though.

Out of curiosity, what were the shard colors called before Shards of Alara came along? Or were there any real names for them?

The standard "name" for UWR seems to be American. So, for example, UWR Delver gets referred to as "American Delver." Y'know, because Red/White/Blue are the colors of the American flag. Which, to be fair, can also easily apply to a number of other countries whose flags are those three colors, but I guess the US gets priority because that's where most of the players are.

Dega seems to be stuck with Dega, though.

Out of curiosity, what were the shard colors called before Shards of Alara came along? Or were there any real names for them?

Jund was 'Good Stuff' ... Naya was 'Zoo' ... but mostly people just sat down and played against each other not actually knowing the exact 75 of their opponent. It was pretty sweet. You also didn't have to respond to things like, 'Ah man you on Jund?' Sweet deck brah' the second you played a Badlands.

I mean, I just put whatever shard I'm playing on my crispy visor, but maybe my opponent's aren't noticing since it's always on backwards.

Why can't we just go back to giving every deck a silly name with at best a tenuous relationship to the actual deck?

I wouldn't eat at that grill because the first ability doesn't read "sacrifice a non-human creature."

Who knows what they put in their fried rice.

Soylent Grill is people!

Mongol warriors were known to be able to live off the land or to subsist from the blood of the mares they rode. Allegedly, in one campaign, they sacrificed one-tenth of their forces to feed to the remainder.

Would 6 mana Moat be too strong for standard?

LOLstandard.

I wonder at what mana cost Moat would be fair in Standard?

I would be shocked if they didn't print some kind of "great wall" in this set, even if just a defender that can block any number of creatures. But the Moat effect seems relevant for flavor. Or maybe a watered down version of Moat, like Island Sanctuary.

Illness in the ranks laughs at your puny elspeth. Seriously that card seems totally playable. It really isn't, at least not in Standard. The problem is that it doesn't do that much. It tends to hit only one card in any given deck that has a card that it affects and usually doesn't completely shut off that card (for example, Elspeth can just tick up, eventually ultimate, and then start up again with 2/2 flyers). If your opponent doesn't happen to draw Elspeth, then you boarded in a card that does nothing against their deck, and even if they did they still have a usage for her.

If I were looking for 1-mana anti-Elspeth tech, I'd much prefer Pithing Needle because it completely shuts off Elspeth, and it can deal with a Jace or Aetherling if that's the route they go.

I have only one complaint about Khaaaans. And it's a doozy.

- 3 years after the Twilight movie and the hype revolving around it (2008), we get Innistrad in 2011. Both feature vampires & werewolves, although Innistrad is darker.

- 3 years after Game of Thrones becomes a thing (dispite the first book being released in 1996, it only became a real bestseller in 2011 when the tv series started) we get Khans of Tarkir in 2014. The Barbarian-theme & medieval looking scenery seem to be comparable...

Now, if you'll include the development time and the testing in the future future league, one might think they pretty much copied both series' success by theme-fitting Magic expansions.

For some reason it seems quite unlikely to me that Wizards was trying to play into the hype around Twilight with MtG, unless everybody here seems to be big fans of the series and always longed for MtG inspired on well, that... I guess it's only a matter of time then before we get a set printed in black-and-white that's inspired on 50 Shades of Grey. I'm so excited!

Didn't think about Charms, but they're defintely something they're not going to leave out.

Jeskai is obviously about artifacts since all colors have relationships with artifacts and fits with the artifact subtheme of M15. It's basically another spin on Esper.

I think one of the wedges has a token theme, either Mardu or Abzan.

Walls are also pretty prominent in M15, so it could be a subtheme:

One of the things about Alara was that shards were defined in early design more by what they *can't* do than what they *can*. With Ravnica its elementary to make individual guilds, but force a third color and suddenly it's a lot less clear where the playground for a wedge/shard lives until you know what they are limited in. I can only assume that wedges make this a tricky game to play.

Like IMHO, a card like Kaalia of the Vast makes itself RWB by virtue of its tribal synergies and that the Lackey ability is on 2/3rds of its colors. That's fine as a standalone effect but it doesn't say much about the RWB 'ethos'. By looking at its lack of GU we know that it would not be strong in permanence; no land-based accel, not probably draw without discard. It would not be brooding or deliberate; it would not play a strong long game. It would not lend itself to hardiness or resilience.

None of that suggests much in the way of mechanics, but it gives some top-down insight into what that wedge could possibly embody.

Of course RUG and BUG are going to stay because a) rug and bug are also real words that are easy to use and b) the replacements sound stupid.

I doubt Abzan can win against Junk, although I always see a problem that it almost sounds like Jund. Jeskai is probably the worst name out of the bunch.

Mardu might stick, simply because Team Italia to describe a R/W/B deck feels kinda stupid.

Both of those cards are old, though. The color pie has since shifted away from these kinds of things.

Recruiter today would almost certainly be white, and would likely track CMC rather than power. I could see them doing Ranger of Eos Jr. or something along those lines.

IIRC they said the RUG wedge was going to be midrange/"big creature" themed, so it's unlikely it'll have much impact on tempo decks in Legacy. BUG was supposed to be about "resource manipulation," whatever that means, but I think it bodes better for Legacy-quality cards given that mana costs in this format are historically quite low.

My guess is that the wedges are as follows:

RUG: Midrange with a Big Spells focus, likely feeling like a cross between an Animar and a Maelstrom Wanderer EDH deck.
BUG: Zone changes. These colors specialize in graveyard interactions, self-mill, and hand size manipulation. I could see some serious card advantage spells residing here.
WUR: Possible focus on chaos/trickery, using something like Ruhan of the Fomari as a precedent.
BWG: This one is supposed to get a long-game mechanic, and life gain appears prominently in all three colors. This is likely our grind-'em-out wedge.
WBR: If this isn't an obvious weenie aggro wedge, I don't know what is.

Also, bear in mind that Khans the set is wedge-themed, but they said the block as a whole isn't. This likely ties in with the way the block will be drafted (the small middle set will be drafted with both large sets in a LRG-LRG-SML arrangement and will probably act as a bridge between themes). My guess is that the large fall set is wedge-themed, the small middle set focuses on two-color pairs, and the spring large set encourages mono-colored play.

Mentor of the Meek says otherwise. White does care about low power.

Isn't the block structure a bit like Zendikar? First land-themed, then ramp/monocolor?

I think it's very unlikely that Imperial Recruiter gets a reprint in a normal set. Wizards cares about secondary market prices (there was no reason for Tarmogoyf to be mythic in Modern Masters, the card could have been rare and the limited format would not have been noticeably affected). The judge foil-reprint of Recruiter was appropriate. I don't see it being reprinted again for a long time.

Then again, I know a cycle of Murmuring Bosks is a common request re: fetch-compatible mana fixing. That's a bit of a high-hope I think, but personally I'd flip my shit if they did such a thing (with or without the tribal angle)

First: Jund and Naya ok - Esper, Bant, Grixis I don't like (as names)

I guess the new wedge names are too exotic to stick.

WBG: graveyard matters - There were some cards that cared about the number of creatures in the graveyard in Theros Block and M15. Not really new, it's the same as in Innistrad so far. A good and innovative graveyard mechanic would be cool though.

WBR: aggressive combat stuff - maybe a dark Boros

URG: artifact matters (again!) - maybe some twisted Esper (There was this strong artifact subtheme in M15.)

WUR: ??? EDIT:auras?? (M15 Brood Keeper and synergy with Theros stuff)

UBG: ??? EDIT:tokens??

EDIT:URG and WUR could also be switched!?

They will probably do a lot of the stuff they did in Shards of Alara for the shards: charms, taplands, panoramas, ... At least everyone will expect that.

Because of the wedge theme there will probably be a lot of commander stuff in this block.
I also guess that there might be a lot of legends like in Kamigawa and Three Kingdoms.
That orcs are back could be interesting for red depending on how their new design will be.
And still hoping for Onslaught fetchies.

Maybe a Doran Elf? G - 0/1 - Elf Druid - TAP: Add B/W/G to your mana pool. Perhaps some Wedge mechanic tie-in, a la Noble Hierarch.

I really like Modern Junk, but it feels like its missing something now. After I upgraded Birds to Deathrite, its very hard to go back to Birds even though Deathrite is banned.

Also hoping for a quality 2-3 drop creature that could potentially see Legacy play. Goyf, Bob, Stoneforge, Knight, Doran, Smiter... they get old after a while, it'd be nice to get a new toy.

I just watched the Magic Panel from ComicCon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S3_oYCnBak

It seems they interpreted the wedges differently than well at least I thought. Instead of taking a color and both enemy colors of it, they say they take one color and one of its allied colors and then the enemy of both. It's an interesting approach. First you can interpret and weight the color combinations differently and secondly there are more combinations to do (probably in the future -> MaRo saves himself some design space).
Oh, and just the first set of the block will be about the wedges!

Also, every clan stands for one dragon aspect.

Abzan W-GB Endurance - Desert Warriors - slow control / late game mechanic
Jeskai U-WR Cunning - Martial Art Monks - outsmart / mislead opponent
Sultai B-UG Ruthlessness - Necromancers? - "do whatever it takes" / manipulate resources?
Mardu R-BW Speed - Mountain Barbarians? - Aggressive overrun
Temur G-RU Savagery - Survivors - Might (giant creatures)

There will be some new creature types and some renewed creature types. We already knew that Orcs will return. There seem also be some kinds of Birds, Wolfman, Cat Demons, Naga and maybe more. Interesting: Djinns and Efreets will return in some new fashion.

The Morph mechanic will return as general mechanic. Additionally there will be 5 clan mechanics. (I have to say I don't like Morph much.)

They say there will be a total of 40 prerelease promo cards, 8 for each clan. So if I understand it correctly you get one out of eight from your chosen clan.

Maybe your pre-release packs will contain 8 guaranteed cards, instead of the 1 we usually get.

Being that this is a 3-color set, I suspect that there will be 'Wedge Lands', like Arcane Sanctuary/Crumbling Necropolis, but for wedges. 3-color can super hard to make work in limited formats, so maybe a guaranteed Wedge Land, and a guaranteed Terramorphic Expanse or something.

I don't actually think they're going to print snow duals, I was just making the point that anything snow that is usable in eternal formats also needs to have Scrying Sheets alongside it or the card is going to become very expensive.

I could see them making the reprints of the first cycle of fetchlands snow this time alongside a snow-covered basic land set. Then they'd have a second set of snow fetches to print at a later date that would definitely draw interest due to... Scrying Sheets!

The problem with morph is that it puts non-public information in play as a live asset. Not that many people would cheat in such an obvious way and one that is fairly likely to get them caught at some point but a few will. Then you have the idiotic real mistakes that cause tremendous interpersonal difficulty between the players.

Cards in play should be face up. Cards that get played should always be displayed to the person who is on the receiving end of the transaction. Morph doesn't add enough to the game to make it an exception to a very good general rule.

This

Super types like "Snow" and "Legendary" don't count.

Subtypes, however, do work. They could easily print something like "Land - Island Swamp Lair" and it would work. But they don't because "it would hurt the spirit of the Reserve list" - long story short, they could, but they're dicks.

The original reason that they gave for not reprinting duals was that the duals took away design space by being better than anything they would likely be able to print later on. This was going to cause them problems in the planned Type I/Type II split where they essentially were planning to reboot Magic the way it should have been done in the first place.

I don't see any reason that they couldn't print the type of land that you listed above at this point. The things would only be around in Standard for a year and a half tops and then they'd have their design space back. All the Eternal formats would get fresh resources and other than Vintage a large number of players playing them at least for a short period of time. The "spirit of the reserve list" thing is kind of silly if you think about it. Juzam Djinns have been replaced by better creatures several times over the last decade. Nobody plays Juzam Djinns any more. There's no reason that dual lands are somehow special or super-reserved or anything like that. If WotC needs to do it they will print lands of similar or better power than the duals to create or maintain interest in Magic.

Again, I'm not a disinterested party in this because I own the duals. I'd still deal with it if this happened. If they reprinted the same cards without giving me a trade-in option for something very nice I'd be upset. If they got around that by printing functionally similar lands that had a real difference somehow, well that's life.

I wish they'd just made some super shiny limited edition duals along about 2009 and told existing dual land owners that they could trade them in for the really cool ones and that nobody would ever get them under any other circumstances. Then reprinted all the duals in less shiny unlimited quantities. My collectibles would have maybe taken a minor hit but not a huge one and all the formats of Magic would have gotten better and more populated along the way.

Raid is like baby Bloodthirst, which is not the literal worst IMO. This isn't an example of something that will get played in Legacy, but the fundamental idea - attack, reap reward - appeals to my Kird Ape playin' ways. I also kind of like that it will get noobs to attack THEN play their guys, instead of the other way around. It's a good habit to be in and no one ever seems to get it independently, so a mechanic that gets them to think about it is good stuff.

Yeah it isn't the most original thing ever, it probably plays a lot like Bloodthirst. But then again, I liked Bloodthirst. "If you're being aggro, get stuff." Heck yes I'm being aggro! Did you not see my Meshuggah t-shirt? People be like "wut deck u playing" and I'm like "DJENT CONTROL"

But srs like I said earlier, I do like how it encourages new players to attack before playing spells. It just may be a little hand-holdy, but good habits are still good habits regardless of where they come from.

Both spoiled mechanics are sort of 'tutorial', right - playing after combat with aggro decks, playing noncreature spells in the Blue-centric clan... it's not bad, I don't think, it's just so far a feeling of "the central color in this clan typically employs *this* strategy, so do *this* and reap the rewards"

But what really scares me shitless now is a recent comment that they continue to power down the Standard format since the power level peaked at New Phyrexia. And no, Theros Block was NOT the low point in power. If that information has any merit, then the Khans Block is going to the absolute low point in terms of power. It's why I've picked up Netrunner. The game's power level isn't super high, but the dev team doesn't suffer from NWO mentality and playing the game feels a lot like playing Storm vs. Delver. A lot of the same kind of nuance where you don't so much flat out deny stuff but instead make it harder for the other player to do until he notices he can't do his plan anymore. A whole game of that goodness <3
FFG is also dedicated to keeping cards in print accessibility should never be a huge problem for long. And, well. Card prices are lower by a couple of craptons.

I know I won't enjoy newer MTG formats that much and that Legacy will inevitably deteroriate, from both WotC's lack of care and the Reserved List, so might as well. And I can enjoy Elves in the meantime.

It's not the most creative thing in the world, no.

However, it is basic in its execution, and both spoiled mechanics are tied into game events, in a simpler way than, like, Unleash or Bestow or other recent keyword mechanics. Where those tended towards specificity, like Bloodrush for example*, these abilities just wait to react to an on-color event. It at least presents itself as a much more open-ended building block, in this way.

* btw, tangent - bloodrush fails horribly because not only is it 'just a combat trick' but it strictly works on attacking creatures. It's a good example of a bad idea bc it violates Least Astonishment while setting itself up to be the Hulk Smash ability. Hulk want smash, not read card. Hulk have to correct many players who not grok Bloodrush because it not work like Giant Growth. (Or like, you know, 95% of fscking pump spells)

If any set in this block sucks, it'll be the middle one because it has to be drafted with two different large sets which are presumably doing different things. Having to be the first pack drafted for two very different sets is going to put a lot of strain on it, especially given how much WotC likes to railroad draft archetypes these days. In the best case you're probably going to end up with a few build-around cards that only work with one big set and not the other. They could dodge that by making the archetypes the same across both formats, but then you end up with the Theros block problem of the draft format being monotonous as fuck because you spend all three sets drafting the same archetypes the same way and then jamming them against the same other archetypes for same-y, boring games. I think the only deck that really got any different was UB, which went from Durdle Control to Inspired Control, which was the same except you attacked more. (EDIT: Oh, and Constellation, but that felt like it mattered more in Sealed than draft.)

The new mechanic "prowess" is like Kiln Fiend but minus the excitement. It does point towards Jeskai being the tempo wedge, though, which is something. My guess is RBW is Aggro, RUW is Tempo, RUG is Midrange, BGW is Attrition Midrange, and BUG is Aggro Midrange.

RWB is certainly aggro - everything points at that.

WUR might be tempo, but with an artifact subtheme which still works with Prowness.

RUG is going to be ramp from what we know so far - take that as you will.

BUG is something about resources. Might involve GY shenanigans or whatever. I think it rather goes into the control midrange direction with recursion.

WBG might be attrition midrange, as you said. I don't remember exactly what they said about this wedge.

It would help if there were more then 20 global enchantments. (and 15 of them from the last set)

Bestow was an interesting mechanic and had potential but there were not enough cards with it and the bestow cost was normally to high to be useful.
Constelation was the only other enchantment matters mechanic, and came out to late to matter.

Most of the (non bestow) enchantment creatures would not lose any play-ability if they were not enchantments.

Maybe in limited it mattered because of the sheer # of enchantments, but once you remove the limited only garbage cards and go to constructed, the enchantment theme dies horribly.

I'm sure people would appreciate more Legacy - playable cards like Delver, Decay, DRS, Grisel, Terminus... honestly, a "Legacy-playable" card has to warp the format or it's not really playable. Every now and then we get cards like Council's Judgment or Faithless Looting which are strong on their own but have little impact overall. Most of the time the card has to be broken though, or it would just be like it didn't exist at all. I think the only card which has been printed in the last years that didn't warp the format around it but improved existing shells by a wide margin was Young Pyromancer. Okay, and Liliana.

Anyway, I definitely expect this block to have a couple of interesting cards. It is a multicolor block after all. The spoiler season just began, and I can't blame Wotc for revealing casual and limited cards first. The former sells the set, the latter gives a small glimpse into new mechanics without giving too much away.

This being the umpteenth thread which poo-poos a set incredibly pre-emptively is giving me a lot of pause in the ways I wish to react in the future to new cards/new sets.

Yes, quite recently I posted a "fuck you wizards" rant in the EDH forum because I initially thought that planeswalkers as commanders is taking too much lease with a format they didn't create, but after a few days and some well-formulated arguments and some re-examining I no longer feel bad about it. I bring that up because I've also fired off rounds of "new cards are bullshitty" posts, and maybe I'm re-evaluating the process that got me there.

I just can't even take this thread seriously for some reason. Must be that whole thing where we have the actual text of 4 new cards in a new set, and every Chicken Little is all piss and vinegar. Already?? Jesus, Lemnear, I'm calling you out - this isn't even hyperbole or flaming, your post history speaks for itself - you don't actually like Magic cards! I want you to look inwards, brother. Go read a book until the spoiler is like 55% done. I'm so serious. You sound like you need a cup of tea and a marathon viewing of Masterpiece Theatre to really just unwind and reflect. Go fishing. Learn yoga. Eat, pray, love. Stop looking at new Magic cards for, like, six months. It's your health I'm worried about. All that hate just welling up, you gotta be just tense as a new soccer ball. Sure you get to have an opinion, but it's just really nice if you like, let your words bake in your mental oven for a few minutes before they're served. That's all. I literally mean no offense by any of this.

I might just be the old man in the room that's tired of keeping up with the Jones' card collection, or tired of wishing the MtG scene was different here in Nebraska, or just too busy with family and work and hobbies that matter a damn to approach this game with this whole "what's in it for Legacy" filter, because honestly there's no happy medium anymore. Really, if a new card makes a dent, it's busted and everyone cries out their butt because their old decks don't work anymore. If nothing makes a dent, the whole set sucks and MaRo is a child-eating clone of Pol Pot with Marc Summers's face stapled on his non-face. It's a stagnant mindset and it prevents people from actually evaluating the cards on their face or sleeving up good tech. And it is a lousy read.

I honestly think that was brilliant. I thought eternal players were supposed to be used to getting a few cards a set?

Aggro_zombies
08-19-2014, 03:44 PM
Honestly, most of the extreme haters are probably Eternal-only players. I play a lot of Limited (or I did, before work started eating into my time), and honestly things weren't too bad until Theros block. Actually, Journey had some interesting stuff going on and if any of it had started in Born then it would have made the Limited format significantly more enjoyable; as it was, there was too much emphasis on building up some sort of haymaker and preserving draft archetypes as the block evolved. It's almost like WotC had a design meeting at some point where they said, "Okay, so players really liked Spider Spawning in triple Innistrad but we didn't support it in Dark Ascension and players were sad about that, so let's put more effort into archetype continuity," without realizing how stale it would make the format feel come April.

Some of that may be just that BNG was absolute ass, though. JOU at least tried to mix things up.

That said, crying about the lack of Eternal playables is just kind of dumb. Eternal formats are largely defined by power level mistakes - it's really obvious in Vintage, but even Legacy makes use of cards like JtMS, Wasteland, Brainstorm, Swords to Plowshares, and a bunch of other cards that aren't outright broken but certainly aren't healthy to have around on a day-to-day basis. Designing cards for that is incredibly hard, as WotC's supplemental products track record has shown: you either get cards that are strong, but not quite strong enough (Unexpectedly Absent, Council's Judgement) or cards that are way too strong (TNN, plus we know Mental Misstep was originally aimed specifically at Legacy) with very little in between (basically just Strix at this point). It's not sustainable and it's not worth their time.

It's like complaining that the last good Pauper card was Gary Merchant. Well, I'm sorry to break it to you, but WotC almost certainly does not have regular R&D meetings where everyone sits down and Aaron Forsythe or Mark Rosewater or whoever goes up to the whiteboard and says, "Okay, we need to make some cards for Pauper, pitch me some ideas," because Pauper is an ancillary format that isn't played by all that many people relative to the numbers jamming Standard, Draft, or even Modern. They make cards for smaller formats and if one of them happens to be good in Pauper or Legacy or Vintage or Prismatic or whatever, then there you go.

Of course, at least some of the bile here is because you apparently can't not be bileous on the internet these days. I doubt all the haters actually feel as passionately about the issue IRL as they appear to on here - and if they do, they probably would be better off from a blood pressure standpoint with just quitting Magic.

First, this was very entertaining and I'm not easily offended. I think it's valid complaining if you have to see the "multicolor" topic, kicker, creatures-matter focus, etc. rehashed every one or two blocks, as if players have no memory and the State of the Art articles feed that impression with the ever same excuses.

Maybe I'm too buisy with family, friends, work and life to dig deep into every damn set and format to cheerish MaRo's warping of the Game to what it is today.

What I kinda miss in Theros block were cards that scream "Build a deck around me!". JOU had Constellation which made an Ok-Impact in Standard with the green card drawer, and Nykthos come into mind. The devotion decks were basically monocolored goodstuff decks that abused Gary/Master of Waves. Other than that, it was an uninspired clusterfuck of Walkers/Sweeper Durdle Control/turning dudes sideaways decks.

I'm interested to see if they can get WR cards right this time. The color combination is severely lacking, especially compared to BG.

I am happy to give Wizards some credit where it is due, Decay did exactly what it was printed to do. The whole printing of the Jund archetype has been sweet and the recent announcement that Rolling Earthquake is getting a reprint is sweet. Sometimes, they get it right. Sometimes, you get Theros.
DRS (as OP as it is) and RiP also ended the long history of massive GY abuse pretty handily. Alongside with AD, they also "solved" Tarmogoyf for good. They can print cards that are good for Eternal without breaking Standard (DRS in Modern was kinda unfortunate, but that's a different story), but instead they decide to reprint old cards with double and tripple the mana costs because they can. The blatant recycling of old cards in the most shameless way possible is probably the thing that pisses me off the most.

All of this quote for the win.

I remember the only time I ever actually contacted someone from WoTC (MaRo) was after spoiling Temporal Mastery. Time walk in legacy??? OP STUPID WOTC. I was convinced it would be the end of legacy, finally make them ban brainstorm, and ruin everything. The same night it was spoiled I jumped to a lot of conclusions, and emailed out my rant. Obviously I was pretty wrong about the miracle mechanic and its actually spawned one of my favorite decks I have ever played.

And related to ranting about no legacy playables in the set: would you people ranting prefer if instead the spoiled cards on the power level (or above the power leve) of delver or DRS? Would that really make you happy if we got MORE cards the impact legacy?

Also guys, we have seen 6 cards. SIX CARDS. One is obviously a plant to get commander casual's drooling, 3 are previews of set mechanics in their most simple and easy to comprehend forms, and 2 are lands that everyone was expecting. How are you making any conclusions from this? It would be like if for RTR they showed us, Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, Azorius Arrester, Golgari Decoy, Coursers' Accord, Overgrown Tomb, and Hallowed Fountain, as reasonable equivalents to the previews to what we have seen of Khans, and we just assumed we'd get nothing for legacy from RTR. Believe it or not, eternal playing spikes are a very small minority of magic players. I'm just making up numbers here, but I bet at the very least 95% of magic players would be more pumped up for a new set by seeing Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius than by seeing Abrupt Decay.

That said, crying about the lack of Eternal playables is just kind of dumb. Eternal formats are largely defined by power level mistakes
I agree; if you are already playing the best 60 card printed there has to be a very good reason why you would want to buy something from a Standard set. I am quite happy with just having 1-2 cards that go into Legacy from each set. Burn may not be everyone's choice of deck but Eidolon of the Great Revel has certainly helped improve its performance. I am certainly willing to wait and see what Khans will actually bring; we might get some eternal playable Morph creatures that do not wreck standard...

We got Toxic Deluge as well and Council's Judgement is seeing play in Miracles and D&T. Wizards can design cards for eternal they just do not seem to want to put any effort into testing.
