Is "Conspiracy" our knock-off "Legacy Masters" set?

Wizards has been very dismissive about reprinting duals and the "restricted list". With the recent reprinting of Force as a judge promo along with a lot of other numerous legacy staples in Modern Masters, does anyone else get the feeling that Conspiracy is just our knock-off "Legacy Masters" set?

You say that like it's necessarily a bad thing. What the set does is increase the supply of some of the weirder cards, like Exploration, Deed, IGG, Stifle, BS. It has a lot of Legacy quality built-in, and should reduce slightly the build-costs of some of the more unusual decks, as well as Delver tempo decks. The lands will still cost a fuckton, though.

The alt-format sets for Commander, Planeshift, and so on, have so far proven to serve a triple purpose:

• Get the EDH crowd buying product instead of handing it over to the secondary market of dollar rare fiestas
• Reprinting a small amount of older staples that are relevant in these 'casual-but-not' alt-formats
• Printing new cards that specifically target Vintage, Legacy, etc, without impacting Standard

It's true that they contain reprints, but often times that is a direct result of the formats those products exist in. It's not much different from the Coldsnap expansion in this regard; if you're going to sell Coldsnap pre-cons, and you're going to tout it as being the 'lost third block of Ice Age', then where else but Ice Age can the supplementary cards come from? It facilitates reprints, but IMO it's almost incidental.

This applies to Conspiracy because -- like the realization with the actual Ice Age block many years ago -- the cards are better if they are playable with the rest of your collection instead of stranded in limbo. While there have still been attempts to create format-specific cards like Conspiracies, Schemes, and those unwieldy Planes cards from Planeshift, on the whole there are not really any new black-bordered cards printed that are only legal in the set they are printed in. So if the set 'has to live somewhere', it's going to live in Eternal.

I'm not downplaying the significance of certain reprinted cards, I'm just saying that these sets aren't really a direct vehicle for reprints in the way that Modern Masters is/was. MMA didn't have any new cards; these sets do and they expressly capitalize on them. EDH sets play around with the command zone, Conspiracy modifies the rules of drafting -- a real "Legacy Masters" set will simply exist in Legacy and add only raw cardboard to the format.

But let's be honest, Misdirection is everyting a set like Conspiracy wants or needs. It's a the same time a very good opportunity to print the card, but also add so much to the ''Conspiracy-flavor'' of this game mode.

These are $2-$20 cards. This doesn't alleviate any of the issue that Exploration decks want Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, that Pernicious Deed decks want Liliana of the Veil and/or Jace, the Mind Sculptor, that Ill-Gotten Gains isn't relevant with Past in Flames in the format, that Stifle decks want the far more ubiquitous Wasteland and that Brainstorm was already the best "bang for buck" in terms of the format.

Yep, exactly. As long as a Tempest uncommon costs 100 dollars, it's not exactly easy for a newbie to enter the format and build even remotely competitive deck.

That's why I didn't say 'ubiquitous'. Woudl I have liekd to have seen a Waste reprint? Hell Yes. Am I disappointed in the reprints in Conspiracy? Only a little.

I don't think Wizards is naive enough to think this will solve the availability problem of legacy, so I wouldn't call this a "masters" set. I think they wanted to explore some new territory, and while they were at it, they tried to jam in as many legacy cards as they thought would make sense.

Even though we didn't get everything, it's good to see wizards throwing out a bunch of cards that were previously quite hard to get.

While I think $100 Wastelands are ridiculous, it's only fair to keep in mind the number of Uncommon from a set as old as Tempest easily compares with Rares (or maybe even Mythics) from a 'New' set released today.

Especially the short-prints, like Force of Will.
