I know it's pretty early but I just booked the flight for my next US trip including GP New Jersey and SCG Richmond.
So here the question: Who of you guys is going to the GP?
Do we make some kind of a community meeting?
See you there!

I'm still torn between the GP and Eternal Weekend. Finally got power and I still haven't played in a sanctioned event with it!
I'll definitely be at one of the two.

I've bought tickets from Norway to New Jersey, so i should be there as well :). I had to choose between Eternal Weekend and the GP, and while i really wanted to play Vintage; there is only two Legacy GPs a year. If eternal weekend also gave out PT invites, i'd probably go to that. Might go to Eternal Weekend in 2015 though!
I'm leaning towards GP New Jersey, but I might go to Eternal Weekend instead. I haven't decided yet...

If you can only do one and are powered I don't think there's much debate. You get 2 complete tournies, each giving you a chance. At a GP 2 bad hands or bad matchups and 2 days down the drain, also being in day 2 with no contention of top 8 is miserable and a waste. "Moneying" for like $600 is failure. I can play sanctioned Legacy 2 times a week for the whole fucking year, but big boy sanctioned vintage maybe 3 times a year. Also Philly and the reading market being a hundred yards away beats the hell out of shitbox New Jersey. My suite is already booked for Eternal Weekend.

No. Casting hydras and drafting wind drakes is of zero use to me. Edison is ~1.5-2 hours to Manhattan via train, so that's something but Edison proper is a fucking shitbox.

I'm tentatively planning on GP NJ myself. With SCG being the TO and the very positive success of the GPs they've run, I'm curious to see what they can do with a Legacy GP.

Yeah if you have no interest in the pro tour or whatever eternal weekend sounds like an infinitely more fun tripIf your primary goal is the Pro Tour, a Grand Prix really isn't your best shot. Your best chance is to find a store with a historically low turnout for PTQs, then go to that store's event.

If you only have one weekend. Better is to just go to as many PTQs as possible, GPs when there's no PTQ, and MOCS when there's neither (if they ever fix MTGO, hah).

Depending on your geographic location, qualifying for the PT through a top GP finish is easier than trying to win a PTQ.
Anyways, if you are looking to have a fun time then go the Eternal Weekend. Chinatown and the Reading Terminal Market are within walking distance from the Pennsylvannia convention center. If you happen to be in the city before or after the tournament, Center City is within walking distance. Additionally, South Street and tourist attractions near Independence Hall are a short subway ride away.
If you want to actually qualify for the Pro Tour with your favorite format and don't mind that the GP is in the middle of nowhere suburbia, then go to GP New Jersey.

It was an easy decision to decide on eternal weekend after explaining this to my wife and make a full vacation out of it, not just an mtg weekend.

Probably going to the GP. Wife and I have a dozen or so old friends in NYC, so we're thinking of heading up for a week, and I'll just go down to Jersey for the afternoon. Usually doesn't take me too long to go x-3 so it's not like it will cut into the vacation much.

There's a good chance I'll be heading to the GP since my permanent address is still in Dirty Jerz so I won't have to pay for a hotel. I'll be coming down from Ohio with some MtG friends probably. Can't wait to meet some of you cool peeps!

Hey, New York guys, I have a question. The weekend after the GP is my birthday, so I was giving thought to just kinda taking the week off and living it up. I've looked at enough maps and Googled around enough to know that I can get from the venue to the city (or vice versa), but I'm wondering how much of a pain in the ass it is. Whether it's easier on paper and whether I should book another night to depart Monday morning and whether this that or the other thing.
tldr: How to venue->NYC for dummies.

The NJ Transit station in Edison goes straight into Penn Station in the city. Looking on the map, there is the station in Metuchen that's technically a closer drive from the convention center. Trains run pretty late too so you can make the most of your time. No easier way beyond having someone just drive you into the city. PM me for contact info if people are looking for rides to the trains station as I live right there.

Not much to do with legacy. Starcity organizing + in the northeast. And Wizards knows that. Legacy format is guaranteed reducing turnout from what it would be in sealed, or even standard.

It's interesting to compare this though to GP Orlando, which was hyped by SCG for months as well. According to Wikipedia, that GP only had 2277 players, and that was a sealed event for a format that was highly anticipated. I'm not sure how the SE US Magic community compares to the NE US community, but I think it says something that a Legacy GP might very well surpass a GP of a more 'desirable' format that had the benefit of the same TO and similar advertisement.
thecrav
10-28-2014, 09:46 PM
I'd also chalk part of the popularity to location and EV.
Location is obvious: There's tons of people in the Northeast, for whom a trip to Jersey is quite easy.
EV: The stuff that they're giving you for your $50 is awesome. That playmat will be desired for years to come. I'd imagine that the playmat alone could pay for your entry and I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear about round 0 drops. In addition, the side events look fantastic. If I was anywhere near NJ, even if I didn't play eternal, I would be all over coming to this GP.

Not much to do with legacy. Starcity organizing + in the northeast. And Wizards knows that. Legacy format is guaranteed reducing turnout from what it would be in sealed, or even standard.
I think the use of "not much" is misleading; it (nearly) implies, that SCG organizing + in the northeast + any format = this turnout. Legacy may not be the only format that could get this, but Legacy does have a lot to do with the number. Making up numbers, but if it's true that Sealed would get 7500, Standard would get 6500, Legacy would get 5500, Block Constructed would get 1000, Vintage would get 500, Extended would get 500 if it existed, Archenemy would get 500, and whatever else, under the same circumstances, the turnout is very much a statement with meaning.
When you're solely comparing to Standard and Sealed, you're comparing to a relatively small and heavy-hitting group of formats. And we don't even know for sure that those other formats would do better; people could be coming out for Legacy specifically. And yes, obviously, many more people on the whole play Standard and Sealed than Legacy.
re Undomian: Florida consistently has the lowest turnout in the eastern US. There's just not a lot of population in driving distance. You have to go to isolated western states like Colorado or Utah before you get smaller turnout. 2200 players for Florida is impressive. Vegas only worked because of cheap airfare and modern masters hype/being the most +EV GP to enter of all time.
re LOLWut: It's impressive for legacy, but Barook was wondering if this would influence Wizards. Highly unlikely that Wizards would add another legacy GP or something because of this turnout (if it happens, it'll be from GP expansion, but I dunno how much more they could expand GPs).

It's interesting to compare this though to GP Orlando, which was hyped by SCG for months as well. According to Wikipedia, that GP only had 2277 players, and that was a sealed event for a format that was highly anticipated. You say it "only" had 2277 players, but isn't that a pretty big turnout for a Limited Grand Prix?

I think that's more like "only" in terms of they could've had a lot more. Orlando was the sixth biggest GP of all time and the fourth biggest limited GP of all time. (5th/3rd if we don't count Vegas)

I meant it more as in that it was small for a SCG GP, which seem to get quite a few more players than events hosted by other TOs.

They're saying based on the rate of preregistrations. That is, if preregistrations continue at their current rate, they will end up with more registrations than Vegas got.

Normally yes, you just get your reward at the player's meeting but given the size of the GP, it sounds like they are doing things differently. This is from their website:
No more long check-in lines! Show up for the player meeting on Saturday morning and receive a voucher for your Registration Rewards, redeemable at the Customer Service Station anytime thereafter.
I would recommend contacting SCG directly, possibly on their GP facebook page. They are pretty good at answering player's questions. Although from the sounds of it, you won't actually get your "rewards voucher" till the players meeting and won't get the reward till you go redeem it which might not be possible to get to before the first round starts.

According to magicgp.com they're underwhelming: If you go 4-0 you win 18 packs of Khans.
One sample event (there's more of these on other days), on Saturday, is the Vintage Challenge. $20 entry, prize payout:
4-0: 18 Khans of Tarkir booster packs, 80-ct. pack of Brainstorm sleeves
3-0-1: 15 Khans of Tarkir booster packs
3-1: 12 Khans of Tarkir booster packs
2-1-1 or 2-0-2: 9 Khans of Tarkir booster packs
2 Wins: 6 Khans of Tarkir booster packs
Other: 3 Khans of Tarkir booster packs
I'm not super excited about hauling a $14,000 deck to New Jersey for a shot at 18 packs of Khans for $20 entry, when for $40 I could buy 18 packs of Khans at the LGS.

Ben's post seemed to imply to me that there would be an actual vintage event. This looks doesn't look like much more than "yea, we'll let you fire an eight man if you want."
Ideally, we'll all still be playing the main event when 6 rolls around. With a scheduled start time of 10A, it's likely to only be around round 6 by the time this event attempts to fire. Unless they announce something bigger or someone wants to arrange something, I'll be leaving my power at home.
Legacy challenge at 2P Friday is interesting. I'll be hauling my ass from the airport to try to make that.
Regarding the Hype, if the numbers are realistic, i can kind of understand it. Modern GP Richmond had over 4,000 people. This location is even more accessible by a larger population, and given the EV just for entering it's possible a bunch of people will enter and just port over modern decks or something, or budget legacy decks. The reddit thread suggests some people might even just register whatever and get the swag. We might see a lot of Round 1 drops for people just wanting brainstorm gear and to play side events during the day.
Plus there's other things to consider like a person playing Jund in Modern just needs the dual lands more or less to play it in Legacy.
Delver decks only require duals, forces and occasionally wastelands to port over.
If someone has an extensive enough modern pool, they may realistically not need much in terms of legacy cards outside of duals, wastelands, and force of will. Buy/borrow the duals for the colors your need, get force of wills if you run blue, and wastelands. The GP has been hyped for months, enough time to get what you would want even if you never played the format.
We could potentially see people budget their mana base and play shocks. It's not impossible. Is it less consistent? Sure, but if you're going to this and all you're missing from any of these decks is the duals, a half decent player could probably just use shocks and play around with their sequencing and still half-ass the event. Notably cute over eternal weekend was that one of the top 8 decks was substituting with shocks. The person will not likely Day 2, much less Top 8 a 6,000 person GP that way, but it won't stop people from enjoying some legacy fun I'm sure.
The biggest GP for Legacy would be interesting, but I'm wondering how the experience will actually turn out.

They've said multiple times that they won't let you register just for the swag but they've also said you can do the insta-drop. There's now a conversation on Twitter regarding whether you can register and show up late, effectively having only registered for the swag. Thus far, SCG's response is "we can probably work something out."
Personally, I desperately hope that is not the case. If so, they're going to be ruining round one for a lot of people. At least a round one drop requires that I meet a new person who shakes my hand as they sign the slip.

That's why they have so many judges for this event. That way they can attend to everyone with their hands raised and yelling when the round 1 timer starts.

I can at least understand wanting the playmat but not wanting to spring for the added expense of the trip/lodgings, and so on. Showing up just to drop...that blows my mind.
I'm not shocked at all. Let's look at the swag:
1 GP Foil Promo Batterskull - TCG mid is $17.04 . The cheapest one shipped is $15.33
1 Brainstorm Playmat - hard to price, but I looked into similar playmats (prices listed below to prevent clutter). The long term value of this is certainly above $50. These playmats are often even higher value right after the event as they haven't spread around to the collectors yet. It's also certainly a collector's item that will hold value for quite some time. I'd conservatively place the value at $100, but let's just say $50 for argument's sake.
1 Pack of 80 Brainstorm Sleeves - On the super low end, assume the same price as a regular pack of sleeves which is around ~$8.
1 Brainstorm Deckbox - On the low end, deckboxes are around $5.
With that, we're looking at a minimum value of $78 - a $28 profit on your $50 entry. Combine that with good side events and I'm not at all surprised that people would show up, enter, and insta-drop. I'm also not surprised that people would try to find ways around SCG's stated policy that, "Registration rewards are only available to participants in the Grand Prix."
My concern is that at such high levels of EV just for dropping out, you're going to have a lot of players with no round one opponent. As much as I love a bye, an unexpected bye is no fun. I'll be quite curious to see how much smaller the pairings list is for round two.
My solution:
Hand out the swag during round three. At this point, everyone in the tournament is still live for day two. The only people who are not playing are the few who have three byes. These players could pick up their stuff during that round. This at least requires the value-seekers to show up for three rounds of Magic. Even if they insta-concede, the increased time commitment is likely to turn off a lot of people.
Prices for highly-desirable playmats, based on the average price of the last five (if five available, otherwise, all recent) sold listings for a single playmat:
GP Richmond (Eternal Witness) - $35.20
GP Vegas (MMA Sword of Fire and Ice) - $53.84
Eternal Weekend 2013 (MMA Tarmogoyf) - $100
Eternal Weeknd 2014 (Cruiclbe of Worlds) - 53.99
On the subject of Vintage, people have been discussing playing on tMD here (http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=46907.0) even though the EV is obviously terrible. I think the EV on going, playing a little Legacy, getting your playmat and stuff, dropping if you do bad and playing Vintage is worth it, but maybe that's just me. That's what I would do if real life things weren't keeping me from going.
I am probably going to see if any of my New York friends are going and see if I can pay them for the registration perks, because I would definitely pay 50 bucks for all that.

SCG already said how they are handling this. When they collect deck reg at the players meeting, they will give your your Premium voucher, your Batterskull, and a voucher for the Brainstorm swag. Anytime after this, you can go to their Customer Services Booth, and turn in the voucher. So it wouldn't surprise me to see a bunch of people leaving to enjoy their byes, a bunch rushing to the pairings boards, and a bunch rushing that booth at the end of the meeting.

If you haven't been to a GP in awhile, the policy was changed after GP Las Vegas due to the fact that there's no way you can reasonably run Saturday registration with modern-day GP sizes. Saturday registration was always a mess anyway, and with GPs having online registration now it shouldn't affect almost anyone.

So round two, Chris "Meddling Mage" Pikula VS. the worst manaless dredge player ever.
Only discarded 3 cards to Phantasmagorian instead of 6, and on his first dredge he puts a Street Wraith BELOW a nether shadow.
Freaking amateur hour over here.
Good for Pikula getting a second bye essentially (assuming he can pull out one of the next two games). He's one of the good guys in the game so i'll always wish him well and cheer him on.

Turtenwald playing the hype with UR delver.
Dies 2-0 thanks to life gain.
In game 2 I'm pretty sure he had lethal as his opponent was holding only one relevant card: daze with a Tapped deathrite shaman at 5 life, while owen had two lightning bolts 3 lands and a brainstorm. He choose to cast brainstorm instead of firering the two bolts.
What would you do in that situation? do you play around spell pierce or force of will (and loose like he did) or try to kill on the spot? Of course being on the draw, there are more chances that the esper deathblade guy has sidedout dazes...

I saw that too but i was thinking i didnt saw correctly because there is no reason to not play third land and just double bolt.
So are you sure he had 2 bolts?
I think i saw a bold and a chain lightning but seems so strange that he played that hand in that way
Maybe he didnt knew a card and he played around Spell Pierce? (He could bolt the body after pierce on smash to prevent more gainlife, but bolting into face he was KO in case of Pierce)

Bolt or chain lightning would have the same result. He could do it on his turn.
Yeah my guess is he would more likely be playing around spell pierce. Some people like siding out dazes on the draw.
Anyway, there's a deathrite shaman active, so i guess he should have tried...

Go to the magic site, the Chat isn't disabled there. Furthermore, there are some ways to get the SCGlive Chat online, were several people are (like 400++ people on average).
@Storm game, if he would have drawn a underground/badlands instead of the volcanic he would have won without a problem. So I can understand his keep.

What annoys and downright alienates me are those new, fucking stupid names - what in the name of fuck is a Jeskai Stoneblade deck? Is that a UWR Delver deck? Or one of those new UWR control-based decks?
It's confusing since that name is interchangably used for both decks.

The reason is pretty simple. Several years ago, the chat wasn't 'disabled', it was well moderated. But one time, a mod went crazy and banned nearly half of the chat users. The reason for that was some misplays from the players and the chat argued about that (if I remember correct). Since SCG didn't want it to happen again, the just disabled it and switched to twitter, since they don't have to mod this.

They should be taking this opportunity to put up new decks and new players maybe Americans haven't seen before. Put up some Euros and see what's up. Like we don't see enough of the Brad/Chris/Brian/Tom tag team.

Yeah, I'm with ya. There are 96 players at 6-0 right now, and they aren't all playing Stoneforge or Delver. If I was setting up matches to cover, they would not just be repeats unless it was very late in the tournament. I would much prefer to see Dredge or Lands or MUD or Elves or Punishing Maverick or that Dack Fayden deck that Cedric was talking about.

If he doesn't have a way to tutor up the chains, which he likely doesn't, then really they're not part of the conversation I think. He might well have gotten matchups in which they were fundamental and also gotten them in hand in time to make that meaningful but that's a random event. Sounds like he's one of the lucky Junds that got full value out of the power level of the cards in Jund without suffering from the inconsistency the archetype is famous for.

Not too suprising - UWR SFM decks are the best choice for that kind of meta.
I assume the Jund list was Punishing Jund, which should also perform very well against such a meta. He probably got lucky on the matches and dodged bullets like combo. He should chew up those top UWR Stoneblade deck as well.
If he doesn't get unlucky for the rest of the day, he might be our token non-Brainstorm deck in the Top 8.
