I am a little rusty in my rulings...
Counterbalance is in play, my opponent plays a card. I activate sensei's top. Can i then let my top ability resolve and still respond to my counterbalance trigger with brainstorm? Or do i have to let both triggers resolve before i can do anything?
Trigger respond, top, top resolves, trigger still on stack, brainstorm, resolve brainstorm, resolve CB trigger.
Trigger respond, top, top resolves, trigger still on stack, brainstorm, resolve brainstorm, resolve CB trigger.
That is confusing
405.5. When all players pass in succession, the top (last-added) spell or ability on the stack resolves. If the stack is empty when all players pass, the current step or phase ends and the next begins.
Both players have to pass priority to resolve the last-added (and only the last-added) ability/spell. In your case first you will resolve Top ability. Then if and only if both players pass, you will resolve CB ability. Meaning you have a chance to play Brainstorm at this point.
Worth noting that (per tournament rules) you automatically pass priority on something you add to the stack unless you specifically indicate you're keeping priority. This only matters when you want to respond to a Top activation with a Top activation, or to Infernal Tutor with LED, or the like.
