Saving Fetches

I am running 18 lands in the deck. I want to get a good draw because I don't have much business in hand and no cantrips.

On turn 2, End of his turn, i fetch before untap for my turn (one land on board). Is that the wrong play or should i just save it unfetched.

I would save it, especially if you don't know what is on top of your library. If you're playing decks with brainstorms, I would usually save it for after brainstorming.

It is a very dependent question. Do you plan to use the Mana? May he have Stifle/Wasteland? Does it help you "Play to an out"?

I feel like, what you have said is you fetched to thin, I do not feel like this is the right play. But if there are other influences, like playing around Stifle or you legitimately need the mana open, then that is not a bad play.

i most likely wanted to thin because he dropped 2 creatures down and I had nothing.

I don't know, your playing to an out, so I respect the play, but you lose the shuffle so there is that too. I guess the question is, how valuable was that shuffle? Also, the percentage you gain is oh so very small. In all, I do not think I would do the same in that position, but that's on the barest of information.

If they're playing Elves you can probably fetch whenever you want to. There's nothing that they're going to do in response to your EoT fetch that you particularly care about. If he's running some variant that uses Wastelands or Rishadan Port then you want to fetch just before you will use the mana.

Thinning just to thin makes such a small difference that unless your list has no advantages to gain from leaving a fetch on the board you're probably better off just doing that. If your list has no advantages to gain from a fetch down the road then go ahead and thin. It's a very small advantage but it is an advantage none the less.
