Just got back from my local pawn shop that likes to buy rares from me from time to time. Sold off a foil Liliana of the Veil to them for 240 and a playset of Scalding tarns for 150. Not too shabby considering they were extras.
Do I buy a couple boxes of something that's out right now or wait for khans and go all in on the fetchlands?

Wait for Khans. People who don't play legacy will be scrambling for fetches. It'll also allow you to take advantage of the hype surrounding other cards that are for standard that you can unload quickly to help mitigate the losses surrounded with buying boxes.

Any pawn shop "deals" anything that they can buy cheaper than they sell.

Yeah, I introduced them to the game and got them into the value of some of the cards. As a result of that I'm also the first one to get a call when someone else comes by to sell off some cards cause I'll usually either buy or trade them for things I want out of whatever gets sold to them. Works out really nicely. They have a chain of stores in south florida that all pool into this primary store so I usually get a couple of calls a week about cards showing up for me to take a look through.

Sometime last year, I sold a Candelabra of Tawnos for a friend to buy 4 FOIL Liliana of the Veil with it. Now 1 Liliana costs as much as the Candelabra

I purchased all five Guru lands for 200 euro some years ago.
Now just Island costs about 250-300 dollars...
Edit: eeh. Just checked abugames. 399 dollars for mint guru island... This is is going to be interesting... Even SCG is cheaper..

Jiminey Christmas. That's a damn good investment. I only wonder if Liliana is going to get into Jace territory...

I totally forget about...
"That One Day in Summer 2010"
Basically, our local nerd strore had a HUGE collection of cards that they had acquired from a different store that had to close down due to being flooded. They were able to save the cards but hardly anything else. Unfortunately the new store didn't care about selling their cards. They still used a price list from 1999 (NO KIDDING! It had Deutsche Mark instead of Euro) and it often happened that they told you to "come back tomorrow" when you asked for a specific card beause "I don't feel like looking for that binder."
So this one day in Summer 2010, for some reason to this day nobody understands, they decided to open the floodgates. They gave me and some friends access to their archieve and let us browse ALL the old binders and scavenge any card we wanted. We are talking about Lion's Eye Diamond, Show and Tell, Natural Order, Gaea's Cradle, Grindstone, Wasteland, Mox Diamond - you name it, they had it. A friend of mine even found several copies of Force of Will in a huge packing case full of blue crap; I even initially made fun of him for looking in there. They charged us whatever the store owner felt was appropriate. My friend Hans bought 15 copies of Natural Order for 20 Euros - alltogether! Other's went away with 20 copies of Show and Tell - at 2€ each!
The news of this event spread like a wildfire over the entire city and pulled in dozens of people over the course of the afternoon. Luckily enough I was there the moment the store owner decided to open his vault and let us in so I got some of the best deals. That day, the shop had a revenue easily north of 1.000 €, but you can only imagine how much higher the actual value of cards they gave out.
That one crazy day in summer of 2010. You had to be there.

Actually the most agressive price change to me was on Show and tell. I started to play MTG when Eventide came out. I asked my friends for all blue thrash they have, so with first 200 cards I also obtained one copy of Show and tell. At that time its price was less then 50 eurocents (and was regarded to me as a bad card, since even all oponnents put permanents). Then came Eldrazi. And later Omniscience. Suddenly almost forgotten card became legacy staple.
Current price is about 80 dollars

Got my pre-release kit for the new set, opened it, got 4 fetches, (delta, foothills, strand, and foil delta) -- sold them all after the tourney for $155, nice little profit.
Bought a playset of foil Goyfs back in the day for $75 apiece, sold the playset for $1200.
Bought a playset of DCI foil promo textless Lightning Bolts for $80, sold the set for $1,000.

so many stories, but, just a few years ago (maybe 3) I contacted someone on craigs list who was in "desperate" need of money. She was selling magic cards she collected from years ago. Amongst other things, she sold me ~30 duals at $10 a piece, and 28 complete sets for $50 each. As she was calling out prices she mentioned that she knew what the cards were worth so she wouldn't budge on the prices.
This was a mom with kids running around, who had several empty bottles of liquor in the trash can. She accepted a check from me as payment, and had me make it out to her baby daddy.
