During testing the following situation occurred a couple of times.

I play Reanimator, my opponent is on Goblins. I reanimate Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, clear his board and pass the turn. He casts Stingscourger. My question is: exactly what happens?

I am sure, Stingscourger bounces Elesh Norn, but I cannot tell wether it lives or dies.

Thanks for clarifying. Please point to the rules, if you can.

Stingscourger will come into play and put a trigger on the stack. You need to pass priority to resolve the trigger, and SBE are checked at every priority, so it will die while the trigger remains. If the trigger resolves, then Elesh is bounced.

It's actually been SBA (state-based actions) for awhile now to better differentiate from spell/ability effects.

Every time someone would gain priority, two things happen first: SBAs are checked and performed, and then triggers that need to be put on the stack are put on the stack.

Stingscourger resolves and changes zones from the stack to the battlefield.
Stingscourger's ETB trigger triggers.
Active player is about to gain priority, so SBAs are checked. One of the checks is that all creatures with toughness <= 0 go to the graveyard.
SBAs have been checked and performed, so triggers that need to be put on the stack are checked for. Stingscourger's trigger is put on the stack targeting Elesh Norn.
The active player gains priority. If both players pass priority, Stingscourger's trigger resolves and returns Elesh Norn to hand.

704.3. Whenever a player would get priority (see rule 116, "Timing and Priority"), the game checks for any of the listed conditions for state-based actions, then performs all applicable state-based actions simultaneously as a single event. If any state-based actions are performed as a result of a check, the check is repeated; otherwise all triggered abilities that are waiting to be put on the stack are put on the stack, then the check is repeated. Once no more state-based actions have been performed as the result of a check and no triggered abilities are waiting to be put on the stack, the appropriate player gets priority. This process also occurs during the cleanup step (see rule 514), except that if no state-based actions are performed as the result of the step's first check and no triggered abilities are waiting to be put on the stack, then no player gets priority and the step ends.
