View Full Version : Manaless Dredge or Burn?

So I'm really trying to break into Legacy and have no staples. My dream deck is Deathblade but that will take quite awhile to build. I'd like to build something cheaper to play in the meantime. Here's the question: is manaless dredge or burn the better deck? Thanks!
*hopefully this is the correct spot to post this!*

Do you enjoy being the hated guy in the room? Because both decks are good for that. But honestly, I'd go with dredge if you want to understand how it works well, it will teach you how to play against the deck, and if you build led dredge you have staples for combo

But with burn, you might at least enjoy playing the deck, and you can slowly transfer into another deck, I'd say if you were trying to go UWR or UR, it's an easier transition from there, but to deathblade you have no overlap.

I'm not concerned if people hate me for a deck I play. Also, overlap isn't much of a concern really. This would be just so I have something to play while building Deathblade. It will probably take me about a year to build it. I guess saying I have no staples isn't quite accurate as far as burn is concerned, I played Burn in Modern for a brief period so I've got those cards.

This really depends on the store(s) you play at. I've had a lot of entertaining matches against Dredge builds, and I played Dredge and Burn myself many years ago. I honestly think just playing the format teaches you a lot, even if you're playing a Modern port or third-rate Legacy deck. Burn and Dredge can both be quite good if other players aren't prepared for them, but both decks are fairly linear, so they have the disadvantage of being easy to hate out. My advice is always to proxy up decks first in order to get a feel for them and their matchups before actually spending money on building them.

I don't think either deck is well-positioned right now, but the most important factor is the pool of players in your area. You can tune Dredge and Burn to gain percentages on different matchups just like almost any other deck.

These wouldn't be long term decks. I imagine I could build burn for less than €100? I've got plenty of Modern staples like fetches etc.

Well, if you have lots of resources, then just pick up both decks. You'll get more wins because people won't peg you as just "the Dredge guy." Both decks are really cheap to build. Burn is probably a bit cheaper now that Golgari Grave-Troll appreciated after being unbanned in Modern.

I would play burn. I might be a little partial cause it's what I enjoy to play. The main reason I think burn though is that it is actually a pretty good deck. It sounds like fiscals are keeping you from your stoneblade list and burn wins alot. My burn has paid for most of it's own fetches, like 1.5 edh decks, and like 1/3 of imperial painter and most of the buy ins at my lgs lol.

Just play budget stone blade if you want to play stone blade. With the fetches being dirt cheap just play more basics, a couple of shocks if you need to. Don't waste $100-150 on a piece of shit deck that will alienate you from people who want to play games of magic. For $100-150 your manaless and burn cards will be worth the same in a year because nobody actually wants to play those cards they only do so because they are poor. Plus by giving the deck a try with budget options you may illicit sympathy and maybe somebody will let you borrow some cards after you ingratiate yourself to their play group. Finally you'll get a basic familiarity with the deck instead of wasting a year casting Lava Spike like a monkey.

4 x Strand
4 x Delta
3 x Marsh Flats
1 x Other Blue Fetch
2 x Tundra Fountains
1 x Underground Graves
4 x Island
2 x Plains
1 x Swamp

22 -- lands (a little higher because your overall land quality is poorer)

4 x Swords to Plowshares
4 x Force (more spell pierces / snares / mana leak can be better in many cases)

30 --

2 x Back to Basics (punish people with more money than you)
4 x Brainstorm
4 x Ponder (derp broken cantrips!)

40 --

4 x Thoughtseize / IoK / Cabal Therapy
2 x Jace (Sorin could be a budget choice)
2 x Spell Pierce / Spell Snare
2 x Supreme Verdict / Other Removal / EE

50 --

4 x Stoneforge
2 x True Name Derp
2 x Lingering Souls
1 x Jitte
1 x Batterskull

60 --

oh man nedleeds really hates burn players. I just figured you'd rather spend a year being competitive then playing a sub-optimal list and getting rolled. All posts made here have valid points though. Just do what you'll enjoy the most.

You are spending a year playing burn though? Why even play? Can't somebody lend you a fucking tundra here and there? Honestly.

You could try LEDLess dredge, is still a budget deck and should be funnier to play than manaless.
But i suggest some testing on Cockatrice before buying anything, both dredge and burn are decks fun to play only for few people, so dont go blind on them.

I play LED Dredge not for budget reasons and i love it, but being fair most casuals dont even wanna play against it, so if you are looking for a deck to play even for fun you could give a try to merfolks, building deathblade you have to get nemesis and forces, so you can easily build a wasteland-less version :)

You can start an ur deck, by replacing dual with shock lands and FoW with pierce.

Grixis is also a possibility, with the new zombie fish with dredge - 5/5 for a b, it is a very cheap and efficient alternative to tarmo. Only the fetches are mandatory.
12 Creatures: delver, young pyro, the zombie fish.
Spells: bolt, probe, cabal, Pierce, daze, bs, ponder, snare.
Lands: 8/10 fetches, 4 waste if possible, 6 shock land and a couple of basics.

You will then have to buy firstly the wasteland (staple anyway, see that as an investment), then the force of will.
At some point, the duals !
Such a list is somewhat competitive, even if you will lose from time to time because of the shock lands or by the absence of a fow.

If you already have expensive cards for burn (fetchech, guides etc.) I would recommend you playing burn, no close, It is good deck no matter what people said you, with good draw, burn deck is able to beat every other deck.
There is much more interaction with opponent and more fun a you can use more cards in other decks.
Manaless is easy to hate out, last time I face it at tournament, I mulliganed to Leyline of the void twice and opponnent gave up both sb games on turn zero:)
People do not want to playtesting against manaless in real life, because is boring and only depends on your hate cards.

Yeah, I have burn built for Modern so I think I have many of the expensive cards for the deck. It might just be the way I go. Then maybe I can win a few games and save some store credit/cash for a real Legacy deck ;)

Yeah Shortly after I recommended you play burn I took 6th at an scg open with it lol. It is fun to play and definitely can speed up building your next deck. Good luck with whatever you choose and most importantly have fun!
