View Full Version : How many decks do you have laying around?

So, out of curiositeit, the title says it all: how many decks do you have, that you can pick up without having to take another deck apart/ proxy more then two cards?

Or do most people have one deck, and after a while just trade it away in favor of the next deck?

I think I have 3 decks assembled right now that might share a few sideboard cards between them. But they are mostly different strategies, I don't have multiple playsets of anything (I think they are High Tide, Imperial Painter, and Lands IIRC).

Have all the things for miracles, elves and Shardless on me right now

I really don't know why I didn't leave shardless and elves with the rest of my stuff but I do

Cardwise - 7 decks. Elves, 12Post, Goblins, Affinity, Reanimator, Miracles and Enchantress.
I'm kinda like a dragon though, I'd never sell or permanently trade away cards not even basic lands. What I have, I keep.

Since I'm only at one set of duals, I think I only have 6-7 decks assembled, but in terms of non-dualed out decks, maybe 15 and 2-3 Vintage?

Currently 2, Golddigger and Death and Taxes. They share my FBB German Swords to Plowshares. I theoretically use another playset of swords so that there is no overlap, but they just look better. But Death and Taxes will get taken apart, since I need Wastelands/Revokers for Vintage Workshop, as well as a few cards for Alesha EDH.

I have the full set of duals and an extra set of Volcs because Volcs are the most played duals.

I have 2 playset of Forces and Wastelands though, since these are staples in everything. I generally can field 2 blue decks at a time along with 1 non blue deck.

I usually will have 1 Uwr deck (Miracles, Pyroblade, Delver or Stoneblade), 1 other blue deck (Rug, Sneak Show, Reanimator, Storm or Bug) and a non blue deck (Jund, Gw Maverick, Team Italia, 4c loam control, MUD) sleeved up at one time.

I can pull them out and switch decks during play tests without swapping out cards which saves time.

ANT, Maverick, Miracles, Shardless BUG, Elves, Infect, MUD, Burn, Painter, Lands, Enchantress, and Reanimator (converting to Sneak Attack next week).

I don't have decks for any other formats though (no Power/Shops/Bazaars for Vintage, no interest in Standard, and sold my Modern cards after the last B&R update).

Recently sold my Elves deck so normally i have close to 2 decks.
I can sleeve up basically any blue legacy deck by now, barring some combo decks.

Currently I have Bug Delver sleeved up, but normally I have some UWR variant (miracles, delver or blade) and foodchain, since they share only fows and to some degree cliques as expensive cards.

Considering purchasing a few additional fetches and forces along with missing pieces for a few decks, but since I play exclusively with nonfoil, first edition german cards it is a bit expensive(fbb duals etc) and sometimes a bit hard to find at a reasonable price lvl.

Just one - pure BUG control. I love mtg but I don't want to hold collection of high value. I can play it until burn takes over the meta and it is versatile enough to adapt to anything other.

Played my first Legacy tournament in 2006 (with IvanPei above, though he was a veteran then)

Currently, have: 12 FOW, 17 wastelands, and assorted duals and fetches... Sorted my cards into:
Lands (complete RUG and Fastlands, both. My fav decks)
BUG pieces (shardless and tempo)
UWR pieces (miracles and SFM-based)
D&T
Combo
Duals and Fetches

Last played in 2011... Lent almost all of those cards out since then up until late 2014. Still frequent The Source and Salvation though. C'est La (busy) Vie.

Legacy: UWR Delver, Goblins, Burn.
Commander: Fully powered Oona, Godo and Sigarda. I also have sleeved the black deck from commander 2014 (stock list).

UWR Delver is my go to legacy deck at the moment.
In commander I love the cards in the Oona deck, but playing Godo gives me a warm feeling in my heart <3

I've had Death and Taxes just sitting in my bag for no reason, while I've been playing Team America. I usually have a Vintage deck built too, always something Blue.

Lately I've had a Modern deck in the bag too, 4c Gifts, plus my foil Rhy EDH deck.

Outside the bag, ANT is sitting on the my deck built aside from the board, which I never got around to getting together since I've never actually played the deck.

I don't have as many Duals as I used to though, since I am trying to turn my extra Revised ones in the FBBs.

I had almost every legacy staple in playset, but get rid of 90% of my collection about 2 years ago when prices were half of nowadays.

About half a year ago I started to play at tournaments again.

First with Burn, then with UG Infect, but after last bannings I sold Noble Hierarchs to purchase Dark Confidants instead, because they were on same price level and I expected value drop. Now Im few cards short to finish BW Deadguy Ale. I will purchase Nobles after they will be reprinted in Modern Masters 2015.

So Im close to three separate decks, but only Burn is complete:)

EDIT: I like different colours spread between my decks and also aggro, combo and control is represented.

I have 4 competitive decks sleeved up with cards being shared between them (thanking myself for using the same sleeves for all my decks)

Death and Taxes
RUG Scapeshift (Modern)

An unpowered cube at about 800 cards also in the same sleeves as my decks just in case I need to borrow something from my cube

I think I'd be able to make some FoWless fetchless UR Delver build, but I guess it won't be a real schlager.
That or some kind of GW aggro. With nine fetchlands, so in the GW department here I rule.

Currently Assembeled :
Legacy - 3 : MUD, a UB Dragon list I am tinkering with for fun, and Spanish Inquisition, can build pretty much any of the current Delver, Storm and Show and Tell decks as well as Miracles (which is mostly assembled but the fetches and FoWs were moved to other decks), Reanimator and Stoneblade however.
Modern - 4 : Abazan , UR Storm, Merfolk (which I have everything to convert to Legacy), and Affinity
Standard - 1 : Temur Large creatures.deck (I like to keep 1 std deck unless something catches my attention, been mostly nothing for the last few rotations)
EDH - 2 : Using Captain Sissay and Scion of the Ur-Dragon as commanders.
I am thinking about building a Tinl Leaders deck or 2 as well.

So if I wanted to build as many decks as I can all at the same time?

Elves
Painter
Burn
Lands
Patriot Delver
Grixis Control
Jund
TES
Dredge

The only cards I would need to share would be the Forces and Therapy. Everything else is stand alone.

I, too, have all of my cards and sideboard options sleeved using the same sleeve type--mainly because my decks share many cards.

I can build:

RUG Delver
BUG Delver
Shardless BUG
BUG Nic Fit

Modern RUG Delver
Modern Gifts

But I can only build one of those decks at a time... Well, maybe Nic Fit and RUG at the same time.

I have a playset of everything that has been played in Legacy (in tier 1, 2 3 and only by me ) but nothing in multiple playsets. I always have many decks mounted because I often invite non-Legacy friends to play the only one real format, but almost every deck has some proxies. I mount a full deck only when I go to tournaments. Today the menu offers:

RG Lands (my deck of choice ATM)

Sylvan Plug
Maverick (Living Wish + Vial)
Goblins
RUG Delver
BUG Delver
UWR Delver
RUGb Cascade

(you know, casual friends like aggro )

Miracles
Dredge
MonoU OmniTell

(casual friends HATE them )

Recently i sold of a large portion of my collection and bought a new (used) car with the money. What i have remain is:
Jund NicFit
MUD (both Cloudpost and Welder)
UB Tezzeret
UWr Miracles
Mono U OmniShow

I am getting rid of OmniShow as we speak. Having to much decks assembled gives you headaches. Never know what to play. But having played nearly anything i know what NOT to play. Now prepping and pimping Jund NicFit for GP Lille. The rest i play for fun. Also might assemble back TinsFins since out of all combo decks this one reminds me the most of the combo of yore.

Death and Taxes, Miracles, Chalice Merfolk and Burn are generally all built at once. I can and sometimes do build various UWx Stone/deathblade decks, Maverick, BURg Delver, and various goofy stuff involving cards like Braids Cabal Minion, Patron Wizard, Fauna Shaman or Edric Spymaster of Trest.

currently I have ~ 8 legacy decks built (2x sneak and show, ANT, Dark depths, Esper, Team America, Merfolk, Belcher) and ~6 edh decks all that I could pick up. If I wanted to build more decks that are of tier quality such as enchantress or elves I could without proxy, even though they are not currently built. My limiting factor is sleeves and the desire to play other decks. I have ant, belcher, menfolk, and Jesper built just to test against.

I have ~2x sets of duals and more than 2x sets of fetches (1 foil), mainly because i haven't sold my non foil set.

i ended up stockpiling staples because I had acu=quired them first, then purchased their foil counterparts, and never got around to selling the rest. It worked out well because now my wife plays and having ~sets of staples helps.

Currently jap'ing out my storm decks (TES, ANT, DD), which are my main love atm; besides that, I have DnT, some delver decks (RUG, BUG, UWR), Dredge and a few random pet decks. Also bought some stuff for Dragon recently.

Modern - Turbo Time - the only fun deck in the format imo

Vintage - pretty much everything with proxy power :P

EDH - bunch of foils for a bunch of decks, currently running Kruphix.

I'm surprised about how many people apparently have multiple blue decks ready to play - owning at least 8 Forces seems to be a common approach :P

I only got 1 deck build at a time, which right now is Miracles. I also have the option to run any Blade deck, Thresh, Merfolk, UR Delver and probably a couple more that I can't think of right now. Owning cards 8 to 12 times is cool, but you can only run one deck at any given tourney, so... I keep all my cards in the same kind of sleeves, so I can easily interchange them. Of course I can also build a couple of Modern decks (Twin, UWR, Junk/Jund) and a whopping 1 Vintage deck (Delver).

That is my impression as well. While I can understand people having a full set of Duals, and then some (perhaps a full set) more, having more FoW surprised me as well. But it seems U is the main color of choice, so in retrospect, having more then 4 of one particular U-staple doesn't sound that weird at all.

Interchanging cards between decks, by using the same sleeves, seems to be a common approach as well.

Yeah, I hear that. I am a bit of a hoarder, although I do occasionally shrink my collection by losing lots of cards, which always hurts my heart place, but it may be for the best.

For cataloging purposes I never have a full deck built unless I'm taking it to a tournament -- I keep all my cards double sleeved in black Dragonshields and sort them in playsets by color/set in a couple long boxes. Then I can easily throw together whatever I'm in the mood for without having to dig through a bunch of different deckboxes. I usually sell off any extra staples I own beyond 5 (keeping 1 for EDH) to save space and because I usually don't loan out cards too often.

Currently can build most all tier 1 decks except for Lands and most other decks except things like 8Rack / High Tide -- this is due to not owning some more niche older cards like Candelabras, Tabernacle, Chains, etc.

The deck I currently have built is Omnitell. The decks I enjoy most vacillate among BUG Delver/Control/Shardless, Nic Fit Variants, and Esper Deathblade/Control.

At the moment, I have 0 complete decks, but I have large portions of:

Solidarity (only missing 1 Flusterstorm and a FoW playset)
High Tide (because there's a decent overlap with Solidarity, but missing things like Candels)
BUG Delver (mostly missing the manabase plus a few other $50+ cards)
Miracles (again, missing the manabase plus some stuff)

In addition, I could probably throw together about half or more of some Infect or Elves builds, as well as probably one-third to half of a Stoneblade or Deathblade build (again, lacking Forces and the manabase).

Most of this is due to my (insane) desire to build the MTGO Holiday Cube in paper. And, you know, owning something like 12 different EDH decks.

currently? I have manaless dredge (or mana/LED dredge, but manaless is more fun to pull out of the bag to screw with people) and burn together. Sold my trops and tabernacle to pay for school this year, but sans those I have RUG lands together. If I had the appropriate duals and/or forces, I could build UR or UWR delver, miracles, any stoneblade variant, ANT (sans grim tutor), TES (actually I could probably put together a not-quite-budget build of tes, just more city of brass/mana confluence than strictly optimal), and miracles. I have all the UWR staples except the duals and forces, and I mean ALL of them. I doubt you can name a UWR card that could see reasonable mainboard or sideboard legacy play that I don't have stashed away in my binder of Legacy sideboard/staple goodies. I'll give you a hint, the UWR playable sideboard options section is 18 binder pages deep. Just the sideboard options.

Actually, flipping through, I think I actually have UWR/UR delver AND miracles both, sans the duals and forces, with a complete 75 for each. I have too many fetchlands lying around now. The fun part is I never play UWR decks in legacy and never will, I'm a diehard for lands and janky combo/burn.

I own two card pools.

One is for Vial Goblins and includes every card that you have ever seen in - or is close to playable for - a Legacy Goblin deck (the one exeption is Chains of Mephisto ).

The other pool includes all cards you would need to build the following storm combo decks: ANT, TES, DDFT, Belcher and Rogue Hermit (+ the Modern UR Storm deck).

I want to add that I always bring 2 decks to any event - in case someone want to play legacy but doesnt have a (competitive) deck. Because in the First few months of my legacy career I could borrow deck from people 90% of the time and I dont know if I had started with legacy if it wasnt for Those people.
So, guys: I feel like we have a certain responsibilty for New Players to step into the format.

Fl0do
02-19-2015, 02:55 AM
Because I enjoy the diversity of Legacy I try to assemble a more or less complete pool. So I can fool around if I feel to play something fancy, play something powerful if I want to win and most important; I can lend complete decks to anyone who wants to play Legacy in my area.

At the moment I am able to build RUG Delver, BUG Delver, UR Delver, BURG Delver, UWR Delver, Esper Blade, Deathblade, UWR Blade, Miracles, Dark Maverick, Punishing Maverick, Death & Taxes, Goblins, Merfolk, Elves Combo, ANT, TES, Belcher, Lands (without Tabernacles which I can borrow if I need it), Dredge, Imperial Painter, Food Chain, Infect, Punishing Nic Fit, Abzan Nic Fit, Pod Nic Fit, Aggro Loam, Bant, Sylvan Plug, Faerie Stompy, Moon Stompy, UB Tezzeret, Deadguy Ale, Burn, Bant Aggro, Shardless Bug, Jund, Zoo, The Rock, Pox, ...

I'm lacking key staples for Show & Tell, 12-Post, Reanimator, High Tide and some real expensive staples like Chains of Mephistopheles, Moat, Candelabra of Tawnos, ...

I can not build every deck at the same time, but usually 5-6 decks are possible, because I have two or more playsets of some format staples (Force, Wastes, Bolts, Cantrip-Shell, ...).

That's actually a really good suggestion: I will start doing this as well.

I like how there are those who have a pretty steep cardpool and can build (almost) everything, and there people (like Gobbolord and ScatmanX) who have dedicated cardpools for specific archetypes. Quiet interesting to read all those different ways of enjoying the Legacy-format!

I have 1 home brew but I don't really count it as I keep it hidden on my desk. Everything else is higher tier decks. The exceptions being probably Walking Dead, Affinity, Enchantress and Pox not usually sure where the fall on competitive scales. A list of most of them are in my sig but tcgplayer limits you to only saving 18 lists. My current constraint is Force of Will I need probably 12 more to finish my next 3 decks.

I currently own more then:

160 Fetches

I have at least:

24 Force of Will

I only competitively play and work on two decks, one in Legacy and the other in Pauper: Manaless Dredge (shell plus most variations, including Blue Manaless Dredge) and Affinity respectively. Other than that, I have 10 casual decks. Of those 10, Pod, Wake, Tron, and Burn see the most play.

I normally have 2 competitive Legacy decks ready to go;

1 non-U SFM based deck (Death & Taxes atm), but it could be Maverick or Junk; also have everything for Nic Fit which I could build without any overlap with D&T

1 U-based deck; for the past while it's been Miracles but I could run UWR Delver or Esperblade too. Just traded a bunch of Modern stuff into Reanimator and Food Chain pieces so going to start toying with some combo for a bit.

I only have 1 playset of most things as I tried to downsize a bit a couple years ago; sold my Goyfs and Lilianas though (right before the MM price spike... :( ), so outside of borrowing / proxy-ing I can't run BUG Delver / Shardless :P

But yeah D&T and Miracles are my main squeezes :)

Miracles, and various Black Delver variants. BUG, Grixis, 4-colour, with and without Stifles and Standstills. Currently it's on Grixis + Tropical Island for Deathrite Shaman, and maybe some Decays in the board. My parnter has Dredge, and most of a Loam deck, but we're lacking major things for it, so it probably doesn't count.

In Modern I have Storm variants, including my Ascension combo deck, UW Tron, most of RG Tron, missing a pair of Karns, and BGx decks, with my partner having Twin. UR Twin, not the bad versions.

We also have Standard decks, but they don't count.

I personally have burn with fetches built at all times, UWR (whatever build of the week that doesn't have jaces) and most of mono green post built personally, in my household we also have goblins/d&t, imperial painter, another full built burn deck, punishing maverick(or Jund, most of the time Jund) and RWBx build, along with dead guy ale(no vial), also have access to most blue and non blue staples short of tabernacle, the abyss, nether void, and a few other overly expensive staples

Has anyone actually broke down and sold off their casual/non-competitive decks? I have thought about doing this in order to pick up a Legacy staple or more SB tech. Aside from that reason, the minimalist in me likes the idea of only keeping my main decks. On the other hand, I enjoy having casual decks to let friends play with. I am certain this is a common phenomenon and there are a lot of valuable cards just sitting around in underplayed decks.

I don't have casual decks, and most of my friends only play competative. This also means that our casual play is really play testing. Even if I would have some casual decks with staples in them, and I decided to break them up, I would not sell those staples. When I have acquered certain cards, I tend to keep them (even if I don't play them)

In addition to the legacy decks I mentioned before, I also have my fair share of pure casual decks lying around. (for that other playgroup )
Current examples being rats, myr, g/x walls, 5cromat and sisay. They hog some amount of stamples too.
I've no intention to dismantle them. I'm kinda collecting rat cards and I'll also continue to buy every new g/w legend they print at least once.

I proxy casual decks... Have a silly URg deck that works on Razorfin Hunter, Gelectrode and Guttersnipe abusing Curiosity/Keen Sense (hence the green splash). I like to goof off from time to time.

I play a different deck every week, cycling through:

Deadguy, maverick, DnT, rock, UW stoneblande, nic fit, zombardment, team italia, goblins, imperial painter, combo elves, MUD, enchantress, burn, miracles, false cure, bomberman.

DnT was my jam for a long time. I go play more painter and elves now, though.

I'm working towards goblin stompy. I play Brago and Daretti in EDH, Lin Sivvi and Ezuri in TL.

I have actually got rid of a lot of cards and have just kept a single playset of most expensive cards the exception being a few cards, like wasteland, that you just need to have more than four copies to support additional decks.

I have three competitive Legacy decks built at any one time these are usually - Miracles/Stoneblade, D&T/Maverick and Jund/Pox/Lands and also my wife's foiled Burn deck.

My collection also has
Modern Affinity, Patriot and Tron decks built and Rock that needs to steal a few cards from Legacy (Decay/Lilly) to be playable
3 EDH Decks
5 Pauper Decks
Tribal decks that could quickly be changed to Tier 1 Legacy like Goblins (Missing Waste/Port), Merfolk (No Force)
5 casual decks e.g. Vampires, Mono-Blue Control, Elves (an older Mono-green Natural Order build)

Interchanging cards between decks, by using the same sleeves, seems to be a common approach as well.
Bulk buying sleeves helps as it makes it easy to move cards between Legacy/Modern decks for tournaments.
