View Full Version : White/Red Whatever
Hey, all. This is a skeleton thread for the yet unnamed red and white Death and Taxes offshoot that Bahra, myself, and a few others have independently tried out in some version. Bahra is coming from something close to D+T like this:
Creatures (26):
4x Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4x Mother of Runes
4x Flickerwisp
4x Phyrexian Revoker
4x Stoneforge Mystic
4x Magus of the Moon
2x Serra Avenger
Non-creature spells (11):
1x Umezawa's Jitte
1x Batterskull
1x Sword of Fire and Ice
4x Ęther vial
4x Swords to Plowshares
Lands (23):
4x Wasteland
4x Rishadan Port
3x Karakas
3x Windswept Heath
2x Marsh Flats
2x Plateau
4x Plains
1x Cavern of Souls
Sideboard:
3x Sudden Demise
3x Ethersworn Canonist
3x Rest in Peace
2x Council's Judgement
1x Cataclysm
1x Ratchet Bomb
1x Pithing Needle
1x Containment Priest
Note that he retains the D+T central features of haters and mana denial with just the Magus from red.
My failed attempts up to now were much further away from anything that actually works. But I proxied this one last night and it was better than my other tries by a wide margin.
4 Mother of Runes
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
1 Phyrexian Revoker
1 Fiend Hunter
1 Aven Mindcensor
4 Imperial Recruiter
4 Magus of the Moon
1 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Stoneforge Mystic
4 Swords to Plowshares
1 Batterskull
1 Umezawa's Jitte
4 Aether Vial
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Chrome Mox
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Arid Mesa
5 Plains
1 Mountain
4 Plateau
D+T does a crazy thing. It is a kind of control deck that lacks significant library manipulation and card advantage. This deck veers far from its D+T roots and looks a bit more like the old Dragon Stompy decks except that it has both of these features included. (I tried it with black for Confidant also, but I could not get the mana right and the casting cost of these guys is on the high end, so I cut it.) Note that almost all the creatures are human, so you can dodge your own Chalice of the Void merely by using Cavern mana (or Vial, of course).
To my knowledge only Bahra has had any tournament success up until this point.

You're desperately hoping that Magus and Fiend Hunter do a lot of work if Chalice on 1 resolves, eh?

Ports are outlandishly expensive online (150 $ per copy), plus the deck is only like 3 days old.
I would play it, too, if I hadn't borrowed my D&T cards to Bahra.
About your deck:
I just don't see the appeal over the D&T core. You're way too 3-drop heavy, the accelerants are card disadvantage and you lack the Wasteland + Port mana denial.
I love D&T, and this type of variant sounds like a lot of fun (I also love MUD because of all the random tricks). I'll give this a shot since I recently got a set of Recruiters ^_^

Splashing red to shutdown Rishadan Port, Karakas and Wasteland seems really bad on the face of it. The lists that Magus of the Moon will really dominate are mostly the same lists that port, Karakas and wastes work well against.
If you really want to get some impact out of the Boros splash the places I would look are Ajani Vengeant and Sudden Shock. Neither of those conflict with what the list is already trying to do. Ajani can supplement the port/waste plan and he's an endgame option which is something that D&T is kind of short on at the moment. Sudden Shock has a lot of utility in a list with no counter spells.

I think that if you're going to take that route, you might as well be playing dragon stompy... I think it'll do that job better. I'm going to be (virtually) testing this list... The maindeck has one card too many and I'm going to be experimenting with one more card to cut. I was originally thinking Flickerwisp, because keeping the curve down is good, but Bahra pointed out how amazing it is to flickerwisp a recruiter, so maybe something else. SFM or Revoker.
23 Lands

4x AEther Vial
1x Jitte
1x Sword of Fire and Ice

4x Phyrexian Revoker

1x Containment Priest

1x Leonin Relic-Warder/Fiend Hunter
I just don't see the appeal over the D&T core. You're way too 3-drop heavy, the accelerants are card disadvantage and you lack the Wasteland + Port mana denial. Yeah, but honestly that is what a Chalice deck looks like. You trade Port+Wasteland for Moon and Chalice. Those two are the badass gorilla disruption of the format - far more effective than Waste and Port. The issues with them are having a deck that sits on its hands on the occasions when they don't do enough (or don't resolve), making sure you deploy them right away, and having some meaningful way to deal with permanents that get through. You will note that all of those issues are really the same thing. D+T does not have that, as you and I both know. But then we are brewing here. Is it a good tradeoff? Dunno yet.
-----
Of course, then there is the issue of countering my own STPs. Thanks, Meekrab. Even though you are a punky snarkrab for saying that way. Thankfully, there is no shortage of strong replacements in these colors. Quick contenders include:
Lightning Helix - not an exceptionally powerful card, but having two colors in its casting cost makes it a fine choice to exile to Chrome Mox
Sudden Demise - I love this card in all kinds of inappropriate ways. But I think it may not be the right one for the job due to the expected good and bad matchups for this deck.
Council's Judgment - Sorcery and 3 instead of 2 being the only issues here.

Jaya is pretty red-intensive.
@Memories of the Time: If you run Restos, you should runn a full playset of Flickerwisps as well. Flickerwisp shenanigans are some of the strongest tricks the deck has and you should maximize them when given the chance. Although I think the curve might be too high in general.
I tested some, and I think that I have been too conservative on the mana. This is a hard thing to figure, but I am going to try to squeeze more out of the mana base. I don't really like Ancient Tomb here, so maybe a couple Ports?
No definite comments on my creature selection. Thinking about Kor Skyfisher. I just think it could be handy as a tutorable Flickerwisp effect. I especially like the idea of putting a Chalice or Cavern back in hand in case of the need to change them. Flickerwisp might be better in general, but it does not work with Chalice very well. Also, I used Avalanche Riders in the past. I think this is a decent choice when using Blood Moon, but I do not have the experience to be sure. Does anyone have actual experience with Dragon Stompy or the new versions of Imperial Painter to be able to shed some light on this?

I imagine the presence of CotV and Sudden Demise shore up the elves matchup nicely. Magus does some work, too, at shutting off fetches and Cradle.

Stoneblade decks are not generally a good match up for D&T, which Magus of the Moon completely fixes. UWR stoneblade and UWR Delver are stone cold to Magus of the Moon, and so is Deathblade. And of course Sudden Demise makes the elves match up much better.

I'd say Goblin Settler is a better choice than avalanche riders because generally you want your bodies to stick around for equipments. Cavern on human is a thing though, while cavern on goblin not really.

We don't have a solid conclusion on land destruction over in the DS thread. Like it was mentioned already, Goblin Settler is much better than the Riders, but we're split as to how good. I feel that he's sideboard material, but there are others maindecking it and some aren't even running it at all. He's normally combined with Kiki-Jiki, which Goblins has been experimenting with as well, so there's at least some merit there.

at some point the more goblins you include the idea of moggcatcher becomes more relevant. Not saying you want to go that way, but after mentioning kiki and settler he naturally came to mind. Dragonstompy usually runs the following too for utility.
1 Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker
1 Murderous Redcap
1 Siege-Gang Commander
1 Tuktuk Scrapper
1 Goblin Rabblemaster

Yeah. I know. (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?19745-Deck-Dragon-Stompy&p=867484&viewfull=1#post867484) I was one of those crazy guys that Top 16ed an SCG Open (http://sales.starcitygames.com/deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=75193) back in October with the list.
So what are the advantages of shoe-horning in Magus of the Moon / Imperial Recruiter into Death n Taxes over just playing Imperial Painter and/or Dragon Stompy?
Both Painter and Dragon Stompy have Sol-Lands which can accelerate out their moon effects, as well. By combining the two decks, what are the advantages?
LeoCop 90

You get to have both the extreme consistency of a deck like death and taxes (even more because you now have a tutor in recruiter) , while adding some of the blowout potential of stompy decks. I love stompy strategies, but their main problem is relative inconsistency due to sol lands , mana acceleration and lock pieces that get useless in multiples... so i really appreciate the idea of playing magus of the moon in a very consistent deck.

I am now playing Kor Skyfisher in the Serra Avenger slot and so far it has been pretty mediocre. Will continue to test it. Need to test Fiend Hunter and Manic Vandal as well at some point.

What? UWR Patriot has Bolt main and so do some UWR blade lists. UWR Stoneblade also runs a bunch of basics, which is why they get away with running Blood Moon in the board. Deathblade has a greedy manabase but they do have the Deathrite to bail them out.
Just seems odd to me to run a Moon effect alongside a boatload of non-basiscs in a deck that has no other use for red mana. I guess the assumption is that Vial bails you out?
Recruiter seems rad though.
Bahra, thanks so much for the update. You are the best source of new info. I truly wish I had the chance to take the pile to events to help out on the data collection.
Recruiter is excellent off of Aether Vial, especially when you can fetch up dudes with flash. I would go so far as to say that Aether Vial (or sol lands) are necessary to make Recruiter a good card.
I do not care much about the name, hence the thread title, but I get the suspicion that we will eventually come to at least two distinct directions. I have tried the D+T offshoots so many times in past years. Many of them have merit. But in the end it was a tradeoff that was not quite worth the effort, so I have always ended up back at vanilla D+T. This is why I am sticking to a gameplan that, while still disruptive at its core, is using different cards as its focus with mere casual overlap.

in many ways, a worse flickerwisp but tutorable. i haven't gotten a chance to try the deck and won't until i get back from vacation, but how does mana feel? are the fetches rather punishing on life or manageable? with no filtration cards, thinning the deck a bit seems like a positive thing. the deck is all about small advantages after all

First of all they need to draw their bolts before we get active Mother of Runes or vial in the Magus of the Moon with Mother of Runes protection. Second of all they need to not have spend their bolts already on Mother of Runes/Thalia/Revoker. Third of all that is if we only have 1 Magus of the Moon when we have access to a virtual 5 copies in the current list.
Most of the time they well get shut completely down by Magus of the Moon, and that's just how it turns out. Maybe you should think through how the games play out before determining that "UWR Delver just has the bolt for Magus and UWR stoneblade has the basics".
UWR stoneblade can't afford to fetch basics a lot of the time, because then Rishadan Port screws them over and even if they can, they will still be hurt a lot by Magus of the Moon and I've found that it just swings the match up enough that it is suddenly very favoured for D&T. I am undefeated against UWR strategies in about 15 matches total against just UWR decks, and before the red splash I used to get crushed by UWR Delver in particular.

Mana is pretty great, I haven't had any problems at all so far. And I've even often fetched a plains without having a second red source because I wanted to be protected against Wasteland. But having a bunch of fetches and 4 Ęther Vials means that the red splash is very rarely gonna be an issue mana wise.
EDIT: Played another daily and 3-1'd again
I beat Elves, Grixis Delver and Miracles losing to Grixis Landstill where I had some unfortunate draws including 1 land + 3 vials on the mull and then he had pithing needle for Ęther Vial and I never draw a second land.

In all fairness I don't think Richard came off like that at all.
I Love the red splash for Recruiter, it sounds really good. I can definitely see you being able to cut down on Revokers/Magus and include more silver bullets to tutor, that gives a great advantage in consistency.
I've always wanted to see a deck run Fire Imp. As noob as it sounds, it takes out so many threats in todays Meta. And who doesn't love being able to read the reminder text to your opponent?

I really wasn't, I just take issue with blanket statements like "UWR Stoneblade and UWR Delver are stone cold to Magus" because they clearly aren't. In my mind, 15 games doesn't mean much unless they've all been in a testing scenario against opponents who know what they're playing against. Those results could just be attributable to the deck still being rogue and opponents not realizing they're up against a Blood Moon deck. I'm sorry, but any deck that runs Blood Moon in the sideboard is NOT stone cold to Blood Moon effects.
But whatever. My motto is "as long as you're winning games, stick with it". It just doesn't make that much sense on paper to me.
I find that there are two distinct flavors of the uwr stoneblade decks. To me it is all about the mana they are based upon. The older design was easy for D+T to hate out with or without moons due to their ridiculous mana base. The newer ones that seem to have stuck around despite the end of Treasure Cruise are much harder. They have like 3 extra lands - all basics I suppose. They land their True Names more often, and are generally more nimble against D+T. Recently, I have not even been fetching Magus against this deck any more. Of course, I am playing a different deck than Bahra, but if my splash were just for Magus, I do not even know what benefit I would be getting.

Maybe you should just get out of this thread if that is how you post normally?
I wasn't mad at all, you're just making stupid posts and not thinking anything through at all, you're just going with what first comes to mind instead of examining how things play out. If you don't think 15 matches is any indication what is then? It's what I've had time for so far, and all my matches are in tournament settings. I'm closing in on 100 matches with the deck and I'm maintaining an ~80% win percentage overall having cashed every single event so far.

Question: So how does this deck do against T1 Blood Moon?
Mystical_Jackass
04-10-2015, 10:09 AM
Seems like a pointless question though since only 1 deck has that capability, you could probably fit most situations into that like Turn 0 Leyline against Dredge or Maverick getting Belched before they can get out Teeg. This is just my opinion but consistency usually wins in the long run against those decks, since if they don't get the Nuts sometimes they lose to themselves--say next game you'd open Mom or Vial, they Tomb and go Chalice or something, you waste their Tomb then follow up with Thalia, gg. I dunno, that's just my experience being on both sides of fench.
Against turn 1 Blood Moon? My version would love that! Dang, do my work for me.

This is purely theorycrafting but If it were me, I'd probably go -1 Mirran Crusader, +1 Stoneforge Mystic in the main. I'd probably want another fetch as well, probably in place of 1 Karakas or 1 Plains. As for the side, why no Rest in Peace? It's still the best piece of GY hate and it has some utility in a lot of other matchups as well. Also, I would think that REB's might be nice to have with the recent popularity of MonoU Omnitells (dropping Ethersworn Canonist via Show and Tell then destroying Omniscience unimpeded is saucy, and if I remembered correctly, happened in GP Kyoto). Not really a fan of Burrenton Forge-Tenders and Relic Warders so I'd probably go -2 Burrenton Forge-Tenders, -2 Leonin Relic-Warders, -1 Containment Priest, -1 SoLaS, +2 Rest in Peace, +2 Council's Judgment, +2 Red Elemental Blast.
Good luck on your tournament!

I pretty much agree with this.
This is my latest list for reference http://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/280731#online
I don't think Mangara is where you want to be in Imperial Taxes but who knows, I just immediately cut it because of the nonbo of karakas + Magus of the Moon. But testing might show that he's still good in the deck.
