Hello!

Ive been trying to put together a stax deck but have been underwhelmed by the results. I would often have opponents playing around my lock pieces, countering them, the lock taking too long to establish or not being able to win the top deck war. Another problem i had was recovering from an unfavorable board state.

for example, a magus of the tabernacle combined with ghostly prison, provides a lock on creatures attacking. Whereas a wrath of god would get rid of the problem outright and with one card and handles the situation immediately. While the lock pieces in stax work well together, the lack of card draw lends itself more towards single card quality.

Following this train of thought, i have put together the following list. Combining proactive lock pieces with board control elements.

4 wrath of god
4 armageddon
4 chalice of the void
4 trinisphere
4 ratchet bomb
4 crucible of worlds
3 humility
3 elspeth, knight-errant

4 mox diamond
4 ancient tomb
4 city of traitors
4 wasteland
4 flagstones of trokair
8 plains

The sideboard is still in development. considerations towards

leyline of sanctity
Glowrider
Oblivion ring
Aura of silence
Aven mindcensor
Boseiju, Who Shelters All

The list is very similar to stax, but the idea is rather than a battle of attrition, it just clears the board as needed.

Also, i do recognize that the list is 58 cards and lacking in win conditions. Considerations going to
Mishras factory
Martial coup
Batterskull
Mobilization
Sacred mesa

The idea being something that provides a lock, decent clock, controls the board or jives well with the other cards.

Any comments or criticisms are warmly welcomed.

Well... this might seem like an odd idea, but I'll just throw it out there. What if instead of running 4xCrucible you run 4x Rest in Piece and a couple Helm of Obedience instead? You'd exile everything... but I thinking with Flagstones & Mox & Sol Land count you'd simply recover faster than them drop a 3Sphere and just sit back till you draw WoG or Helm. RiP has that benefit of f'ing over your opponents gy too while providing part of 2-card wincond. If your deck doesn't care about creatures or even its own gy, a lot of decks would struggle how to interact with it.

i definitely like the idea of being able to run main deck gy hate, but i dont think flagstones will trigger with RiP in play.

Wanna share my list, feel free to test it:

Spell (35)

4 supreme verdict
4 armageddon
4 g. prison
3 trini
1 defense grid
4 mox
4 crucible
4 rhystic study
4 chalice
1 batterskull
1 elspeth
1 aetherling

Lands (25)

4 waste
4 tundra
1 island
1 academy ruins
8 sol lands
1 celestial colonnade
4 flagstone of trokair
2 mishra's factory

In this way you have more inevitability.

Aetherling is slow but quite immortal and so is batterskull with ruins or mishra with crucible.

Your wrath are uncounterable and the study punish hard your opponent for every spell he casts and works like a pseudo draw engine.

The 1Xs you see in the list are there to support general strategy. I prefer 1 grid over the 4th trini and the lone espelth just to diversify our closers.

Colonnade can untap under BTB or choke and is another finish.

Maybe i can swap tundra #4 with some WU land that untap under choke (but this is a detail).

My 2 cents

Bye

PS: how to link cards???

it also kind of changes the game plan a bit. crucible has synergy with the majority of the deck. It allows for abusing city of traitors, quick recovery from geddon, waste locking opponents under a 3ball, mox diamond shenanigans and flagstones deck thinning.

RiP offers game 1 gravehate, and a combo win with helm and helm doesn't really do anything by itself.

Maybe RiP and helm in the side for gravehate when needed and an alternate wincon?

heres a revised list after some testing and goldfishing

4 wrath of god
4 armageddon
4 chalice of the void
4 trinisphere
3 oblivion ring
4 crucible of worlds
3 humility
3 elspeth, knight-errant

4 mox diamond
3 mishra's factory
4 ancient tomb
4 city of traitors
4 wasteland
4 flagstones of trokair
8 plains

sideboard
4 leyline of sanctity
4 rest in peace
4 helm of obedience
3 defense grid

RiP and helm come in against anything graveyard related (boarding out crucible) for hate or a combo win, grid against counters and leyline against burn, storm, discard, etc.

still not sure if flagstones with RiP is any kind of a liability, but further testing is required.
