First and foremost, and something that should generally go without saying, is be a fucking gentleman. I am not running this to stuff someone’s wallet. I am running this because Legacy is fun. And while I do expect it to be played in a professional and competitive manner, it should in no way be treated as cutthroat.

Cockatrice is the official program of this tournament. Anyone who needs help using Cockatrice just has to ask. If the individual pairings decide that they want to use MWS or MODO instead, that’s up to them, but not being able to play your match because you don’t have Cockatrice means you won’t be playing in this tournament at all.

Lurkers, friends, and people just signing up are welcome to join. The only stipulation is that you must personally represent yourself on The Source, and failure to keep in touch will result in you being dropped like a bad habit. That last bit going for active members as well.

You can private message or post your deck code at any time prior to the start of the tournament, and that deck code will be put on display to ensure fair play. Your deck may not be changed or altered at any time during the tournament. Once the tournament reaches top eight, the full decklist will be required and will be distributed.

For those of you who don’t know what a “deck code” is, it’s the eight-character code that displays when you load a deck in Cockatrice. It will never change so long as you play exactly the same deck.

Do not share another person’s decklist without their permission. I know many will run their hallmark decks and that many may not care and that it may be obvious in many circumstances, but there’s no reason to aggressively scout this tournament. If someone wants to post about their own deck, feel free to join in. But don’t post about someone else’s sweet tech if they haven’t come out with it first, and certainly don’t message BigDong87 and tell him that he’ll be playing against RUG Delver next round.

Given the environment that the games are being played in, there will be no time limit for the match when it is being played. You are, however, still expected to play at a reasonable pace. If someone is abusing this leniency, report them to me and provide proof, and I’ll work on it from there.

It’s accepted that people have work, school, kids, ladies, and lives that otherwise take place outside of Magic: The Gathering, and that you can’t just pop on whenever you feel like it to take care of this tournament. However, there must be a reasonable point when the round must end in order for the tournament to continue. So, rounds will last four days. That's about half a week and should be enough time to allow everyone to fit in a match around their usual schedules, so you are required to complete your games within that timeframe. You are expected to coordinate your own times to play.

If your match is done and you're ready to face your next opponent but don't want to wait for the rest of the slowpokes to finish their rounds, you don't have to. If you know who your next opponent is, you can go ahead and play whenever. However, don't get upset if other people don't finish their matches as fast as you, and if your turning in of results gets sloppy, I'm going to ask you to slow down for the sake of organization.

If the players can’t manage to complete their round it time, the player who made the most earnest effort to get the match to happen will advance while the player who came up short will be given a loss. In general, I ask that you be gentlemen about such situations. In the event that the players cannot agree upon who tried the hardest, I will be the final word. I don’t really like being the final word though, so please do your best to just solve it amongst yourselves.

If, for some reason, there are extenuating circumstances that prevent a player from completing their match by day four, but they could do it on the next day or so, message me. I loathe time extensions on principle, but allowances will be made where necessary. However, if you fail to meet that new deadline, you will receive a loss.

When your match is done, both players must post in this thread to confirm the results.

Along with being responsible for managing their own scheduling issues, players are also responsible for managing their rules issues. Players can and should keep replays, logs, and screenshots of their matches saved in case of a dispute. If you have a rules question and don’t have cdr’s cellphone, Cockatrice has a link for quick judge answers. (http://chat.magicjudges.org/mtgrules/) If there is a dispute that can’t be solved so easily, as with before, I am the final word.

Prizes are guaranteed for top four, and I'm hoping to be able to payout to top eight. This is coming out of pocket, so don't expect anything too fancy, but I'll definitely make it worth your while so long as you keep a realistic perspective. Though I don't expect it nor need it, if anyone feels like donating anything from cards to alters to playmats, feel free to PM me.

Well, you could also just host the tournament on http://battlefy.com, which is why I was asking. Might be more convenient for you overall. I'm not sure how far you can customise tournament procedure there, but I'm pretty sure double elimination works.

Yeah, since I'm not exactly sure how I'm physically making the bracket (short of Google or MSPaint), it's definitely worth a look. I'll check it out when I'm at home though because the work computer is basically crap for anything other than typing.

And, with that in mind, if anyone feels like pointing out that I'm an idiot or knows of any resources that might be useful, please, feel free to shout out. I've participated in tournaments and run contests, but I haven't actually hosted something like this before. So, while I'm fairly confident of my ability to pull it off, it's also something of a trial run for me and I'm bound to miss something.

@iamajellydonut: As suggested before, I'd like you to consider time zones. Because fuck playing at 3 am in the morning on a working day due to time zone differences.

How many rounds is the tournament going to be? I'm without internet a few days in the middle of August.

I mean, no matter which way you try to attack the problem, the only realistic solution I can see is to ignore the problem (http://nedroid.com/comics/2013-08-05-beartato-problemsolver.png). Segregation will only end with one really lonely portion of the tournament. The best I can say is that we're basing match times off people's personal schedules and not a rigid "round starts at 6pm PST". Which means that they can play in the morning while you play in the afternoon or them in the afternoon and you at night and so on and so forth. It does suck, but the options are limited.

The number of rounds will be based on participation, and it should work out similar to a Swiss event without a cut to top eight. If you need to take a break, depending on what the actual amount of time is, that should be fine. As stated, if you truly can't make a round in the scheduled amount of time, but you could make it the next day, just let me know and an extension could be allowed.

That'd be sweet! For some reason I thought you lived in South America instead of Portugal and I was really confused as to how you got a Lille playmat. Anyway, I'll definitely shoot you a PM once the final tally is in.

I'd be surprised, but thrilled, if we broke five rounds plus one more for the finals. As for the amount of time that's going to take, rounds are four days long. Shorter if everyone finishes sooner. Shorter still if you feel like playing your next match in the bracket sooner than the official round end time.

I'm also on a fair amount of the time since my job allows it, I may have to take a break from the game for about 10 minutes sometimes to do something for the job, but there is a lot of down time too. Finally got a message from Bigbobbobber a couple of hours ago, but I was out. Looks like he's been busy with work and will be out this weekend, the soonest we can do our match is on Monday. Will that be okay Jelly?

Since I'm not really wanting to give out auto-losses, that's fine. I'll start the next round on time but leave the slots you two would occupy as sort of a "to be determined" with hopes that the next set of matches'll make up for lost time. However, failure to get the match resolved on Monday will result in somewhat arbitrary losses being distributed.

Current Bracket:
I've had a few people message me so far wondering what in the devil is wrong with the bracket and why this and why that. Valid concerns, and it basically boils down to the fact that we're throwing forty-two people into a sixty-four person bracket. Over half the people in the tournament had byes in the first round. Which is, to say the least, pretty ridiculous, and the bracket has and will just try to continue to compensate for that.

The major consequences of this are that some people have to play out more rounds than others, and that there will be two(?) more rounds that really didn't need to exist in order to compensate for this. So, while extremely wonky, it is technically working "as intended".

Looking forward:
"Working as intended" isn't the same as "working as I'd like it to". If I were to do this again, and I do want to do this again, I'd probably look to either cap signups out at normal and even player counts or figure out a bracket that arranges the byes in a more convenient fashion. Other than that, other than a really slow start due to the sheer number of byes, this has gone pretty swimmingly so far in terms of the flow of the tournament. I think it'd be better if I could nudge the round time down to three days, but certain realities do have to be lived with.

Also, even though it's caused problems, I'd just like to say that I'm thrilled forty-fucking-two people came out to play in a lame tournament with "TBD" prizes. And, speaking of which...

Prizes:
I've been delaying the announcement of prizes for a bit for two reasons. One reason is that I wanted people to sign up not for loot, but for the excuse to play Legacy. And, again, you did not disappoint. The other reason is that I wasn't entirely sure what I was going to give out. From the start I had basically settled on paying out as though it were a $5 entry fee with 100% returns, but I have a bunch of stuff laying around that I don't use anymore and more that needs to get traded in for things that are useful, so I've just been sort of delaying the announcement even further until I could settle on stuff that I don't mind parting with but also stuff that would make for decent prizes as opposed to just "here's my hand-me-downs".

With that said, I do still fully intend on paying out to the top four, and I am still considering what I could do for 5th-8th. I do have a few things that I'm strongly considering adding to the pool and I have a few more things that I'm considering getting for the pool, but what I can definitely add for now are a SP+/NM- Force of Will, a German Scalding Tarn, and a few decent playmats in case cards aren't your thing.

Next round will be your deadline.

The rounds only move at the pace of the last people in line. So, since the rest of the lower bracket has yet to be completely filled, there's no real reason to impose a deadline on you guys since your moving faster wouldn't actually expedite the tournament. Starting next round, all of the byes should be filled, and the tournament should start to progress at a normal pace.

Again, this is a pain in my ass as well, and definitely something I'm looking to overhaul for next time.

This is actually really good news because at least now I know what's missing.

It seems as though I can't get rid of that blank slot, but I can move it. Why? I don't know. But I was able to move it up to an already completed match-up (the regrettably dropped Megadeus vs strom) and it seems to work out fine with regards to future rounds.

I chose a bracket over Swiss for a few reasons. One is that I see no advantage to allowing people to play in the tournament once they're out of contention. At least in a physical tournament, it's probably going to be your only opportunity to play Legacy for a while longer. But this is played on Cockatrice, and if you want to play more games, all you need to do is log on. Another is that a bracket allows for more error than Swiss. Example being that people needing to take extra time for their round won't slow anyone else down in a bracket while it would end the fukken world with a Swiss based tournament. And another "good" reason is that they also feel different. With Swiss, when you drop, you drop because you're a failure or because the matchmaking Gods are against you. When you drop in a bracket, it's because you lost to a person.

Those are my three biggest, crappiest, and laziest reasons at least. The decision for this was up to me, and I therefore went with what I wanted. And while I do still prefer the bracket, I am open to suggestion. If enough people come to me and say they want to play Swiss instead, then Swiss it will be.

As far as prizes, if there were another, and I hope there is another, I would have to charge an entry fee. I was and am happy to payout for this one on the house, but continuing to do so would leave me relatively destitute. Not only would an entry fee make my life easier, but it might also allow for a more interesting prize structure.

I plan on opening a poll once this tournament gets near the end. If anyone has any suggestions for the next potential run, speak up, and I'll add them to the list.

But since you'd still be waiting on the results of Holo_rip vs bigbobbobber anyway, there's no point in kicking him quite yet.

While I would love to see a stream of the top eight, I neither have the setup to do so nor the time to make it happen. However, I don't have any trouble with someone else arranging it.

As far as the byes go, I don't plan on arranging them as suggested at all. On a general note, it goes against the spirit of how I'm trying to arrange the event. The goal is more games, not fewer. Making it to the top of the hill is only a reward, not the purpose, and therefore byes should be seen as an inherent problem rather than a boost. "Spirit" crap aside though, I'm hoping to make byes a non-issue by eliminating them altogether rather than resorting to doling them out strategically. I'm going to put it up to a vote later on, but I'm considering instituting a hard cap as to the number of players that can register, and doing so will eliminate all byes.

What i meant was:
if we stay with double elimination and something like 56 people sign up there would be 8 byes in the first round. and i feel people who have done well in the first season could be rewarded rather than just handing out wins randomly.
However if you say: okay, we either have a double elimination tournament with 16,32 or 64 people (depending on how many join) then thats also fine. but then again it would mean fewer games ;)
