FAQ and matters of etiquette:

First and foremost, and something that should generally go without saying, is be a fucking gentleman. I am not running this to stuff someone’s wallet. I am running this because Legacy is fun. And while I do expect it to be played in a professional and competitive manner, it should in no way be treated as cutthroat.

Cockatrice is the official program of this tournament. Anyone who needs help using Cockatrice just has to ask. If the individual pairings decide that they want to use MWS or MODO instead, that’s up to them, but not being able to play your match because you don’t have Cockatrice means you won’t be playing in this tournament at all.

Lurkers, friends, and people just signing up are welcome to join. The only stipulation is that you must personally represent yourself on The Source, and failure to keep in touch will result in you being dropped like a bad habit. That last bit going for active members as well.

Unlike the first one, this tournament is not free. There is a $10 entry fee. This fee can be made via PayPal to. Please include your Source username along with your payment. If you'd like to or need to pay the entry fee via another method, message me and I can try to work something out.

If you're from overseas and have to deal with excessive exchange fees, you may feel free to deduct the exchange fee from the total amount being sent. Simply message me a screenshot to verify. Any other basic fees are at the expense of the person submitting.

You can private message or post your deck code at any time prior to the start of the tournament, and that deck code will be put on display to ensure fair play. Your deck may not be changed or altered at any time during the tournament. Once the tournament reaches top eight, the full decklist will be required and will be distributed.

For those of you who don’t know what a “deck code” is, it’s the eight-character code that displays when you load a deck in Cockatrice. It will never change so long as you play exactly the same deck.

Do not share another person’s decklist without their permission. I know many will run their hallmark decks and that many may not care and that it may be obvious in many circumstances, but there’s no reason to aggressively scout this tournament. If someone wants to post about their own deck, feel free to join in. But don’t post about someone else’s sweet tech if they haven’t come out with it first, and certainly don’t message BigDong87 and tell him that he’ll be playing against RUG Delver next round.

Given the environment that the games are being played in, there will be no time limit for the match when it is being played. You are, however, still expected to play at a reasonable pace. If someone is abusing this leniency, report them to me and provide proof, and I’ll work on it from there.

It’s accepted that people have work, school, kids, ladies, and lives that otherwise take place outside of Magic: The Gathering, and that you can’t just pop on whenever you feel like it to take care of this tournament. However, there must be a reasonable point when the round must end in order for the tournament to continue. So, rounds will last four days. That's about half a week and should be enough time to allow everyone to fit in a match around their usual schedules. You you are required to complete your games within that timeframe and are expected to coordinate your own times to play.

Unlike when this event was run as a bracket, there will be no lenience for those who are unable to complete their match in time. Being a Swiss event, one match lagging behind means everyone lags behind, and that is unacceptable. In general, if it becomes clear that a match will not be completed in time, the player who made the most earnest effort to get the match to happen will be granted the win while the player who came up short will be given a loss. In general, I ask that you be gentlemen about such situations. In the event that the players can't agree on a winner, I will be the final voice on the matter and may be forced to issue a draw.

Intentional draws or losses will not be allowed. Players determined to be exploiting the above note will be penalized or removed.

When your match is done, both players must post in this thread to confirm the results.

If you intend on dropping at any point during the tournament, please let me know. I am not a mind reader. Anyone who no-shows for two rounds will be considered dropped.

Along with being responsible for managing their own scheduling issues, players are also responsible for managing their rules issues. Players can and should keep replays, logs, and screenshots of their matches saved in case of a dispute. If you have a rules question and don’t have cdr’s cellphone, Cockatrice has a link for quick judge answers. (http://chat.magicjudges.org/mtgrules/) If there is a dispute that can’t be solved so easily, as with before, I am the final word.

In the event of a client crash, take a screenshot of as much information as possible and check if the client saved a replay. If a replay is available, use an available and agreed upon member to view the replay and help reconstruct the game. If a replay was not saved, use the screenshots to recreate the game to the best of your ability, and call upon a member to insure that all hands are accurate. If the game cannot be recreated or agreed upon, the players must replay their match. If you suspect your opponent is abusing this policy, report them to me.

Prizes to top four will be determined after the close of registration. Players finishing at 5th-8th will receive free entry to any one future event or the a comparable cash value.

Event information is subject to change.

Make sure you save your decks to a separate folder just in case, and the server info is cockatrice.woogerworks.com (port: 4747).

This is fine. So long as you have the code publicized before your first games, I'm happy. So long as it can be verified that the deck's contents remain consistent through every match.

Speaking of first round.
All this week I've been in the process of un-moving and, now that it's finally my day off, I owe my roommate a bit of responsibility in terms of whipping the place into shape. I've challenged myself to not turn on my computer at all today and (outside of a quick stress-relieving weekly later on tonight) I will be cleaning and shopping non-stop. Even after I get home from the weekly probably.

You can expect to see pairings promptly posted tomorrow morning. I can't risk posting pairings and then getting lured away from my responsibilities, and there will inevitably be questions (some stupid some not so stupid) that can't go unanswered.

I would blame the computer for eating my post, but it was honestly just me being an idiot.

2sec on those pairings...

BRUTAL

Sundering Titan being one of my favorite cards, I find this thoroughly amusing.

This:
Game 2 I mull to 6 on the play and end up being annoying with a Defense Grid lead so I could resolve the Chalice on 1 for turn 2. He Cliques me and lets me keep my hand of Metalworker, Sundering Titan, Staff of Domination, and City of Traitors. He lets me keep all of them when I have that Chalice on 1, Mountain, Furnace, and Citadel in play and he has an EE set on 0, so I take the risk and play the Metalworker and it resolves. Next turn he still doesn't blow up the EE, so no StP, and no 4th land. My next turn I play staff, play Titan and he scoops.

Yeah, blub had failed to show the prior round, and you had posted with attempts at communication for this round, so when it came time today to make a choice between win/lose/draw, you made the cut. I hate to be the arbiter, but it's not like I can punish you for other people's faults. However, while I wholeheartedly agree that you shouldn't be in the top eight at all, I would like to clarify that it's not because of "skating in on a bye".

Also, announcement!

Read the post dammit.

So, prizes can be found below. And, before you say what you're thinking ("hmm... these lack a certain cohesion and seem really last minute"), they are kinda just shoved together. However, it's not without good reason. Yes, I'm a lazy sack of shit who has a certain affection for procrastinating, but there's more to it than that.

Pre-planning had me setting some dosh aside in an effort to keep a growing pool of prizes. For example, have six potential prizes this "season". The four winners take their picks. Rest go into the vault to be added onto the five new prizes for next season and now there's seven choices! Cool, right? And then eventually it becomes pretty clear that no one wants the playset of Portuguese foil One with Nothings, so we hold a tournament that pays out to as many people as we have prizes and start fresh for the next one. Pretty fukken solid, right? Problem with that is... how regular did I really expect these to become?

This month and next month are the "holiday season". No way in hell I was going to work around that, which means things are pushed to early January which means two months of nothing. Two months of crap sitting in a shoebox and two months for me to change how I feel about this and two months to maybe even find new employment (the current being where I get to post from most). So, I procrastinated as I always do. With sound intentions though, and it's something of a good thing that I did procrastinate, because I did change my mind. About a few things. One is that I no longer see this as an eternal thing. Just not gonna play out that way. Good intentions don't get you everything. Tradition's out the door. Neato tricks out the door. The other is that I'm kinda... done with the game? I don't mean that in too sincere of a sense. I popped open my binder after the "news" yesterday and after a few silly beauties stared me in the face, I realized there's no way I'm actually quitting. But I am stepping back, and my interest is definitely waning.

So, that being said, I kinda axed the theme that I did start going for and just kinda went ham on cool shit. Many of the things on the list are pre-owned staples that are going to be needing a good home while others I kinda just snap went "I want that" or "that'll make a decent pick" after rifling though listings and binders (like the sick set of altered Deathrites). You'll also notice that the list is completely devoid of foils, and that's intentional. Because if no one picks the obscure EDH foil, there's no fukken way in hell I'd want the thing and flipping it would be more painful than peeling off my fingernails. So, yes, it's disorganized and it may seem kinda lazy, but it's all from the heart, and if you really don't want a Trop (that was only so recently acquired #sad), then I'll be more than happy to hold onto it.

Maybe I'll do this again sometime in the distant (or not too distant) future, but it probably won't be as silly, it definitely won't be continuous, and I might even look to gain something from it.

But fuck all that shit above! Because top eight awaits! There may be a playmat added later if a commission happens and if I don't just want to outright keep both of them, and the list might grow a teeny bit in general as I potentially de-"invest" (honestly anyone who knows me knows there wasn't much to start with and it's been slowly trickling away for a while now), but here's what we got to work with for now. Relevant pics will be added in a bit.

Top Four Pick:
Tropical Island (MP)
Liliana of the Veil
City of Traitors (japanese)
3*Cryptic Command (lor)
4*Deathrite Shaman ("full art" altered)

You have four full days. Round ends November 9th @ 11:59pm EST
Pairings for next round go up the following day.

Quarter Finals!

Not modified play/draw rule. That was introduced to counteract intentional draws by offering an incentive to play games.

As there was no potential here for intentional draws, there will be no incentive offered. Play/Draw will be randomized.

Quarterfinal pairings were also, as a result, randomized.

Decklists will be posted in the OP.

Both players need to report results either in this thread or via private message.

Not modified play/draw rule. That was introduced to counteract intentional draws by offering an incentive to play games.

As there was no potential here for intentional draws, there will be no incentive offered. Play/Draw will be randomized.

Quarterfinal pairings were also, as a result, randomized.

I don't understand what this means. Been out of the tournament scene for a while.

If you ever reach the top eight of a GP or an SCG, the way the play/draw will work is that the higher seeded player from the Swiss rounds will automatically get the choice to play or draw. For example, in the case of bigwerdz vs Fry, Fry would go first as he finished higher in the Swiss rounds. This is done to encourage players to play till the bitter end during the Swiss rounds as opposed to engaging in intentional draws. Ordinarily it's only seen at the higher levels of play, but some smaller events also copy-cat the procedure, and I just wanted to clarify that it wouldn't be the case here.

tl;dr
Roll a dice like always.

but I sort like your name for it.

I feel like it's more accurate.

Roll a dice like always.I can understand why you want to run it like this, but what was the point of me playing against Dragonslayer90 for the undefeated slot if it means less than fuck-all? (As we're both getting in at 4-1 regardless)

Only reason I played it out was because I thought seeding would be relevant.

He wanted that sweet 1 in Dragonslayer's L column.

Basically what he said.

Also, the entire point if this was and is to play games. In fact, it was switched to Swiss from bracket upon the request of many in order to allow them to continue to play even after they were out of contention. In hindsight, it probably wouldn't have mattered if I had made an exception for your case, but the intention was that the games should be played, so I paired you.

p.s. TheArchitect managed to get me in three games even after I won the roll. Game 1 I flooded but stabilized thanks to Punishing Fire even through an Entreat the Angels, but then he abused three fukken Tops in conjunction with Monastery Mentor and crammed my shit in. Game 2 was a lot less close with lots of Wastelands and a Wear//Tear hitting his Rest in Peace and targeting his Top followed by an immediate Chalice to lock him out. Game 3 was very close, but we went through a long string of one-for-ones where I didn't have the mana to double up on threats while he filtered perfectly for answers. Eventually jammed the meanest Counterbalance with a Vendillion on top. Eventually I get more mana and I decide to test the waters with a pair of 2cc spells since he has an empty hand, no fetches, and at least one Vendillion Clique stuck on top of his library. He spins and wiffs with the top three. Uses one of his two Tops to draw a Brainstorm. Casts Brainstorm. Draws three. Puts back two. Spins remaining Top. Sees one new card... and it's a Wear//Tear. Never come back.

Game 1 was close and fun, I made a lot of mistakes and almost lost even with an entreat for x=4. Game 2 I didnt get to do anything. Game 3, I had excellent filtering and my opening hand was solid. It was like 2 STP, Brainstorm, 3 land, top, and then I quickly drew 2 counterspells.

Fun games, I am not looking forward to playing against all of the mono-red decks!

dsck and myself are still trying to find a suitable time to play. Main problem might be the fact that his evening is when I'm usually asleep, with the whole being on the other side of the world thing.

Hopefully done either Wednesday/Thursday morning AEDT, which is 24-48 hours from this post.

That should be fine. We had at least one attendee at the GP, so we're gonna be waiting on that match anyway.

Speaking of which, Dragonslayer, your inbox is full. :D

dsck 2-1 Speedbump.

Both of us played reasonably well, although I think I missed a few tighter lines of play that could have been taken. My deck shat on me hard throughout, which wasn't fun.

Cheers once again for running this, iamajellydonut. If there's another one of these, looking forward to it.

G1 I think we both mulled, I had t1 top, t2 counterbalance while speedbump had senseis top as well but was stuck on 1 land for 2 or 3 turns while I laid lands and entreated for the win fairly safely.

G2 Mulled hand with countebalance, volcanic island, island, clique, entreat, council's judgment, disenchant to better hand but without counterbalance. I couldnt find counterbalance fast enough, got on too low life total and eidolon finished me.

G3 I believe speedbump mulled here again. I managed to deal with early goblin guide and got the cb lock down soon after.

bigwerdz 2-0 over fry. I drew pretty nuts against his mulligans. Great games and glad we got to play again.

Fry
11-11-2015, 10:34 PM
Lost horribly. 0-2

Game 1 on the play, mull to 6 with 2 Daretti in hand, scry 1 away, draw the 4th one a turn or two later, first turn Chalice on 1 only slowed him down.
Game 2 I have no hate and the only shot I have is if my Hellkite lives... Yeah that didn't happen...

Nice to chat briefly and go through the motions of a couple games. ^_^

dsck hit Entreat all 3 games. I handled them game 1 and bashed with Vent/SOFI for the win, but couldn't beat the Angel army in games 2 or 3.

Mana problems were recurring throughout the whole tournament, I need to add at least another land next time. Stirring Wildwood?!

G1 I mull to 6, keep 1 lander and bottom top card and miss land drop 2 turns while jrs has active bob. I somewhat catchup with entreat but then equipped b/w manland finishes me with SoFI on it.

G2 I keep 5 lands pierce + stp. I have option of piercing t1 therapy but decline because im greedy and he names stp. I clean the board with terminus and land keranos which takes over the game.

G3 Jrs has t1 therapy naming top but otherwise slow start with his next play being turn 3 Drana. I brainstorm into terminus + entreat and and those angels go all the way.

G2 and G3 my tempo was really off. I kinda wished you had Pierced my Therapy, because then my Bitterblossom would have landed turn 3. I jammed it because I wanted to remove the Pierce and had nothing else to do since I missed a land drop. If I do nothing you Pierce Souls or Truths or a Sword when I hit my third land and set me back another turn. Looking back I guess I could have sacced Bob to flashback Therapy so that BB would land. That might have changed things a bit and was probably the right play.

Anyway, 4th place is pretty good for a weird pile I threw together the night before. GGs everyone.

Finals

dsck 2-0 TheArchitect

G1 We durdle around first turns with cantrips and I try to go for turn 3 counterbalance with pierce back-up which gets FOW'd. Then he plays turn 4 counterbalance to which I have engineered explosives that I risk casting @ 2 and he misses with blind reveal. His EOT I blow it up, topdeck top and then proceed to find counterbalance and all my force of wills.

G2 I board out 4 terminus, 1 entreat (I left 1 in the deck), 2 stp, 2 plains. In: 2 pyro, 1 reb, 2 fluster, 2 clique, 1 venser, 1 counterspell

I think this game came down to him not finding top/counterbalance, being on the play and having to use force of will leaving him behind in resources. I also drew well and found my tops and counterbalances.

All my opponents were friendly and played well. Thank you jelly for organizing this tournament!

my matchups were:
Miracles (thearchitect) 2-0
Deadguy ale/rock (jrsthethird) 2-1
Burn (speedbump) 2-1
Aggro Loam (jelly) 0-2
Daretti MUD (fry) 1-2
Imperial Taxes (bosque) 2-1
BUG Delver (btm10) with True-name nemesises 2-1?
4c Delver (crush) 2-0

Confirmed, dsck beat me 2-0 in the finals.

Game 1 I cast 3 brainstorms with fetches and put back 3 terminus, 2 Swords and a plains, and was not able to stick a top or CB.

Out: -4 Swords, -3 terminus, -1 Entreat, -2 Plains
In: +3 Blasts, +2 Wear/Tear, +2 Fluster, +3 Clique

Game 2 I had an ok hand of Wizards, lands, cantrips and jace, but did find any disruption besides FoW and did not find any top or CB till it was way too late.

He played very well and they were enjoyable games. The whole tournament has been fun, thank you for organizing it Jelly!
