GOODIE BAG

Goodie Bag is a 3-color deck with a small splash of blue. The point of this deck is to have answers and a constant stream of tokens to generate virtual card advantage and board presence. It has a very “swing” feel due to the number of tokens it can make.

Deck list as of 10/15/15

Main Deck:

4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Dark Confidant
4 Young Pyromancer
4 Monestary Mentor

4 Lighting Bolt
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Cabal Therapy
4 Thoughtseize
4 Lingering Souls
4 Gixtaxian Probe

4 Bloodstaind Mire
4 Marsh Flats
2 Arid Messa
1 Cavern of Souls
1 Bayou
1 Plains
1 Mountain
1 Swamp
2 Badlands
2 Scrubland
1 Plateau

Sideboard:
2 Blood Moon
2 Slaughter Games
2 Wear//Tear
3 Pyroblast
2 Zealous Persecution
1 Pithing Needle
1 Null Rod
2 Containment Priest

The biggest question in this deck would be blood moon in the board. This spot can be switched but for right now I am enjoying the idea of turn 1 swamp then deathrite, turn 2 plains, turn 3 blood moon. As always let me know any comments, questions, or concerns. Don’t forget

My first question is simply why not blue? Chaining cantrip into cantrip seems really good with what your plan seems to be.

My question is where are the Intangible Virtues?

I thought about blue. Originally this deck started as only mardu tokens. The orginal idea was
-4 Deathrite
-4 Gixtaxian Probes
+ 4 Faithless Looting
+ 2 virtues
+ 1 kolaghan's command
+ 1 goblin bombardment

Other ideas were to
- 4 deathrite
- 4 Gixtaxian Probe
+ 4 Stoneforge
+ 1 Batterskull
+ 1 Jitte
+ 2 virtue
***this would have changed the sideboard as well

The major reason for no blue was to attempt to exploit counters with removal. An argument could be made for a uwr token list.

- this post was done on phone so please excuse grammar, spelling, and format

What do you mean, exploit counters with removal?

I like the proactive plan, and the removal is great, but I can't help but think that Lingering Souls is just slow as heck. Replacing that with something you can cast turn 3, as well as (reasonably) contributing to multiple tokens in one turn off a generator, AS WELL as finding you that generator, seems pretty good. What about:

-4x Lingering Souls
-1x Cabal Therapy/land
-1x Thoughtseize/land
-1x Swords to Plowshares/land

+4x Brainstorm
+3x Ponder

or Sensei's Divining Top, or something. Basically, your deck wants to chain cheap spells that have some atrociously good but fleeting effect, and generate stupid board advantage off them. Brainstorm finds you your shit, is fast, plays nice with fetches, plays nice with Confidant, plays nice against opposing discard, etc. It's too good to ignore in this format. Ponder and SDT are kind of similar, in that they don't DO anything, really, but they dramatically improve the consistency of your deck in general, and your ability to fight through opposition. If you're going heavier blue, may as well look into Snapcaster too.

Aside from Slaughter Games, I am all about that sideboard. Is that there for combo, or big creatures you can't beat, or what?

EDIT: I'll explain why I don't like Lingering Souls, sorry for being a bit unclear. I don't like it in this, because nearly every card in it is just stupid good for its mana cost. Together, your individual card quality is high. Each of the cards has some pretty severe limitations though: half your creatures are nearly worthless without you having spells. Lightning Bolt is efficient, but any creature with a toughness over four is essentially immune. Swords is great but can't hit non-creature problem permanents like Ensnaring Bridge. Cabal Therapy is good if you know your meta....but all those strengths start to multiply synergistically with the other very good cards in the deck (Bolt poops out tokens, Swords the same, Therapy of a sudden takes no resources to flashback. . Lingering Souls is good, sure. It's on theme, it has its benefits. But on its own, in the Legacy cardpool, casting a 3 mana sorcery that bumps out two fliers is just bad. Even with flashback, it's still a very underwhelming spell on its own and is really, really bad without something else triggering off it.

One of our local players has been playing nearly this exact deck for months now. His build is pretty close to yours, except he does not run Deathrite.

One thing he brings out of the board though is Ensnaring Bridge, which is often a real pain, since he can draw, swing, pay the card, then you can't attack back. Just an idea you might want to consider, obviously depending on your meta.
