The time has come to build my first Legacy deck playing blue. I can't decide which deck to build though. I've been told Mentor isn't quite good enough in Legacy and I've been told Deathblade is just a pile of good cards. I don't want my first deck to be crap so some input would be great!

We are going to post a podcast episode this weekend on an Esper Mentor deck we have been working on. It's a couple hours of three Legacy players discussing this deck in detail. We talk about some of the differences between Esper Mentor and Esper DeathBlade. Keep your eyes out for The Brainstorm Show: episode 15, hope you can listen and weigh in with your thoughts!

But here's my real concern: What is your background? Usually, people already know what kind of deck they favor over. I assume you're not building your first Legacy deck and you have been playing legacy using other decks, do you have a tendency/personality on tempo strategy? control strategy? Even if your current deck is not blue, you must have a tendency to lean toward certain strategy than the others.
Don't just pick up a Blue deck because other people've told you to, it has to be something that fits your style.

I've been playing Death and Taxes for a little while. I just miss the countermagic and card selection that blue offers. I really enjoy playing Young Pyromancer in Modern and Mentor looks even more fun.

Hi, perhaps you can try Mentor Miracle? I think the best shell for Mentor could be Miracle because of the ridiculous interaction between Mentor and SDT, especially when you have 2 SDTs and lots of lands already in your late game:)

I have played both decks a lot but only had good results with one of them. I am obviously biased and think Esper Mentor is the better choice. But no matter what deck you play, I would avoid deathblade. The deck looks good on paper; it has some of the best card in the format all in one deck. But in reality, its not very good at anything and probably has THE worst manabase in legacy. Shardless BUG or Jund are better midrange decks, Miracles is a better control deck, and Delver is a better aggressive deck. On the plus side, its matchups are not too polarized, but that also means you have play super tight and not get bad to luck to win even your "good matchups". You don't get many free wins with Deathblade.

Thanks for the recommendation but I really don't enjoy Miracles :(
