2/14/16 MTG Deals' Legacy-for-Power
hey folks. i played RUG lands in a 46 man legacy for power event over the weekend. my list was:
4 mox diamond
1 smokestack
3 engineered explosives
4 exploration
4 life from the loam
2 crop rotation
3 punishing fire
2 intuition
1 gamble
4 green fetches
3 tropical island
1 taiga
1 forest
4 wasteland
4 rishadan port
1 tabernacle
3 grove of the burnwillows
3 tolaria west
3 maze of ith
1 academy ruins
1 karakas
1 bojuka bog
1 ghost quarter
3 thespian's stage
2 dark depths
SB:
4 krosan grip
3 sphere of resistance
2 chalice of the void
2 phyrexian revoker
2 choke
1 crucible of worlds
1 zuran orb
over the course of the day THREE people told me how weird it was that i was playing intuitions in a lands deck. (seriously?!) fed-up with all this "INTUITION IN LANDS?!" nonsense, i reminded the last guy who said something (who i know has been playing legacy for years) that intuition was the linchpin of the deck before thespain's stage was printed. he responded with, "lands was a deck before thespian's stage?" :eyebrow:
round 1 -- elves!
my opponent was sleeving up next to me before the tournament began and i saw him flip a natural order, so i knew what he was on going into this match. this let me mull appropriately, and i started strong with an engineered explosives getting three dorks, a port, a tabernacle, a punishing fire, and a wasteland (though no way to recur any of them). my opponent got in a handful of deathrite activations putting me to 10, but the game was swinging in my favor. on the turn before i was going to seal things up, he found a cradle and natural ordered into craterhoof for exactsies. losing the first game of round 1 hurts, but the turn 3 kill i got in game 2 made up for it.
i had the prison-y draw in game 3, and after a few turns i had 2x sphere of resistance + phyrexian revoker + a port or two. at one point my opponent goes into his main phase with a bunch of cards in hand + 5 untapped lands + no active mana dorks and casts glimpse of nature. i say, "resolves!" the spheres make the glimpse cost 3, leaving my opponent enough mana to cast...uh...ornithopter? he stares at his hand for a few seconds, and, apparently at a loss for ornithopters, passes the turn. i smash him with marit lage a couple turns later. feelsgoodbro.jpg.
1-0
round 2 -- bug delver
i mull to a pretty bland 6 with, i believe, a maze of ith, a mox diamond, a tolaria west, and smokestack, but no clear plan. it's possible that i should have gone to 5 -- game 1 mull decisions are craaaazy hard in RUG lands. my opponent has the mono-creature draw and starts shitting out dorks. by turn 5 he's played something like 2x tarmogoyf, 2x deathrite, and 3x delver. i find a piece of removal and tabernacle, but those + smokestack can't get there in time. MORE LIKE SLOW-KSTACK AM I RIGHT?!
in game 2, i had the opportunity for a turn 3 kill, but he was getting a lot of filtering with cantrips. a well-timed waste or lili would have been disastrous, so instead of going all-in i let him beat me up with a tarmogoyf for a few turns while i wasted him off black sources. knowing he wouldn't be able to lili a marit lage, i safely went for the beasty on his upkeep to close the game out. (yes, yes -- i know you can play around lili by making marit lage on your opponent's EOT, but this exposes you to getting blown-out by a sandbagged wasteland. see my previous tournament report at http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?27810-SCGLA-RG-Combo-Lands for the primer on wasteland vs. sac effects and when to go for marit lage.)
game 3 was a good one. my opponent puts on early delver + goyf pressure, but i'm going for a quick 20/20. the turn before i can make marit lage, my opponent reveals a submerge flipping a delver. RUH ROH! my life total is precariously low, and i want to crop rotate into a maze of ith, so -- all during my opponent's declare attackers step -- i lead with an intuition as the counter-bait. it works in fucking spectacular fashion, as my opponent forces pitching the submerge. nice. i then go for the crop rotation, which gets dazed, but, in dazing the crop rotation, my opponent has left himself with only one land (and thus no way to play lili on his next turn). niiiiiiiiiice. with no possibility of a lili and an exiled submerge, i'm free to make marit lage on his upkeep and win on my next turn. my opponent, as it turns-out, didn't know marit lage was indestructible, and was holding back an abrupt decay as insurance. that's gotta sting.
2-0
round 3 -- ANT
this sounds crazy, but i'm going to go on-record and say that this is a pretty favorable match-up if played correctly. game 1 i mull to a terrible 5 and get absolutely crushed. game 2, i mull to something like phyrexian revoker, chalice of the void, crop rotation, and 3 lands. my opponent duresses me on his turn 1, and takes the chalice. he then plays a lotus petal and passes. maybe i'm reading too much into this, but i think he was trying to bait me into naming lotus petal instead of lion's eye diamond with the revoker i was obviously going to play next turn. i don't take the (possibly imaginary) bait, and name LED anyways. always name LED, kids. i follow-up with a sphere of resistance and a couple ports, and marit lage shows up before he's able to assemble the combo.
game 3 was an absolute fisting. i keep something disgusting like 2x port, mox diamond, revoker, sphere, chalice of the void, zuran orb. an early chalice @ 1 makes him infernal tutor, revealing a cabal ritual. i follow-up the next turn with chalice @ 2. he obviously doesn't do much this game and the match ends with a board of chalice @ 1, chalice @ 2, sphere of resistance, zuran orb, and phyrexian revoker on LED.
3-0
round 4 -- miracles
starts with a deck check. first, a word of advice for TO's: if you want your tournaments to run smoothly and on-time, DON'T DECK CHECK THE MOTHERFUCKIN' RUG LANDS VS. MIRACLES TABLE. the check, naturally, takes a whopping 13 minutes (wtf?!) and we're off. my opponent starts off strong with mentors and counterbalance/top lock, but i manage to slow him down juuuuust enough with a tabernacle, a maze of ith, and engineered explosives on weird numbers (playing around counterbalance) to clear the mentor and his tokens. i drop to 1 before taking-out the last mentor token and snapcaster, and finally try for a marit lage, which eats a swords.
my opponent finds another counterbalance (the first one got gobbled-up by the explosives which killed the snapcaster), and we grind with that in play for a while before i recur the explosives and take out the second counterbalance. we durdle for an absolute eternity. i keep making marit lages, but they all eat a swords. or a terminus. or a snapcaster snapping back a swords. all the while, my opponent is jace-ing me while protecting his 3rd and 4th counterbalances from my recurring engineered explosives with an endless stream of counters. and topping. and fetching. and topping some more. and activating top, holding priority, and spinning. meanwhile, i'm punishing his jace, digging with loam, recurring stuff with academy ruins. it's a ten-outta-ten durdlefest on both sides.
lo and behold, before we know it, it's TWENTY TWO MINUTES OVER TIME, and we draw, still in game 1, with no clear winner in sight. i have 98 life. in retrospect, i should have just focused on destroying the counterbalances and going for the punishing fire kill. but hindsight -- much like my 5 or 6 marit lages who have taken-up farming -- is 20/20.
3-0-1
round 5 -- 4 color aggro loam
this matchup sucks. chalice @ 1 slows you down. knight of the reliquary can tutor for karakas and wasteland. maindeck scavenging ooze attacks your yard. liliana + wasteland makes it hard to go for marit lage.
in game 1, i'm able to hold-off a couple knights of the reliquary for a while, but i get buried under the card advantage of my opponent's various engines. i cast a few life from the loams, but the dredges are absolute garbage. i'm able to bog his early loam, but can't find a way to sac my bog to start recurring it. game 2, my opponent has the game all but won, but i drop a ghost quarter, thespians stage, and dark depths over the course of a couple turns, ghost quarter his karakas, and sneak a marit lage in for the win.
in game 3, i have a mana denial opener, and try to take advantage of 4 color loam's awkward mana base. on my turn 2, i aggressively krosan grip my opponent's turn one mox diamond, but he draws into lots more lands and mox diamonds. he finds a leyline of the void, which shuts-down my loaming, and i'm once again buried under dark confidants, knights of the reliquary, and his loams. my opponent thought the early krosan grip was huge a misplay, but, working with the information i had, i think it was the right line.
3-1-1
round 6 -- eldrazi
both my opponent and his deck seem to be ports from modern. he has to read pretty much every card that isn't modern legal, and since i can't distinguish one 5/5 pile of psychedelic vomit from another, i have to read most of his stuff, too.
his deck is about as uninteractive as you can get, so it doesn't protest when i make a turn 4 marit lage and swing for 20. i mull into a long series of ever-shittier hands in game 2 and finally settle on something with crucible of worlds and some lands. some giant rainbow-cyclops-squid exiles the crucible out of my hand, and him and his friends quickly bring me the sweet release of death.
in game 3, i struggle to keep my opponent mana starved, but he eventually lands some silly, undercosted beater and a spellskite, and uses the spellskite to force his beater through my maze of ith. i engineered explosives the spellskite just as his board turns into johnny's bizarre wet dream. i'm able to assemble stage/depths just as my opponent would attack for lethal, i block with the fatty, and kill him on the crack back.
i'm seeded 6th going into top 8.
4-1-1
quarterfinals -- reanimator
we try to split, but the guy who winds-up being my opponent makes us play it out.
knowing what my opponent's on, i try to mull into a hand with some early interaction (preferably a crop rotation), but i settle on a 5 with a wasteland and a potential turn 4 win. my opponent wins the die roll, goes turn 1 entomb => turn 2 exhume and i die.
game 2, i mull into a decent 6 of crop rotation (for instant speed bojuka bog), chalice of the void, sphere of resistance, maze of ith, and two other lands. i play fetchland, go, and he goes island => careful study pitching griselbrand => lotus petal => crack petal => reanimate. i respond with a crop rotation, but he forces pitching little jace in response. jesus h. christ i hate reanimator. i lay maze of ith next turn, but he's able to draw 7, which finds him a tidespout tyrant, a careful study and exhume. that's all she wrote.
props:
- my opponents, who were all super cool guys
- my deck, because people still don't know how to play against lands
slops:
- 13 minute deck checks on the miracles vs. lands table
