FAQ and matters of etiquette:

First and foremost, and something that should generally go without saying, is be a fucking gentleman. I am not running this to stuff someone’s wallet. I am running this because Legacy is fun. And while I do expect it to be played in a professional and competitive manner, it should in no way be treated as cutthroat.

Cockatrice (link) (https://cockatrice.github.io/) is the official program of this tournament. Anyone who needs help using Cockatrice just has to ask. If the individual pairings decide that they want to use MWS or MODO instead, that’s up to them, but not being able to play your match because you don’t have Cockatrice means you won’t be playing in this tournament at all.

Lurkers, friends, and people just signing up are welcome to join. The only stipulation is that you must personally represent yourself on The Source, and failure to keep in touch will result in you being dropped without hesitation. That last bit going for active members as well.

Unlike the first one, this tournament is not free. There is a $13 entry fee. This fee can be made via PayPal to. Please include your Source username along with your payment. If you'd like to or need to pay the entry fee via another method, message me and I can try to work something out.

If you're from overseas and have to deal with excessive exchange fees, you may feel free to deduct the exchange fee from the total amount being sent. Simply message me a screenshot to verify. Any other basic fees are at the expense of the person submitting.

You can private message or post your deck hash at any time prior to the start of your first game, and that deck hash will be put on display to ensure fair play. Your deck may not be changed or altered at any time during the tournament. Once the tournament reaches top eight, the full decklist will be required and will be distributed.

For those of you who don’t know what a “deck hash” is, it’s the eight-character code that displays when you load a deck in Cockatrice. It will never change so long as you play exactly the same deck.

Do not share another person’s decklist without their permission. I know many will run their hallmark decks and that many may not care and that it may be obvious in many circumstances, but there’s no reason to aggressively scout this tournament. If someone wants to post about their own deck, feel free to join in. But don’t post about someone else’s sweet tech if they haven’t come out with it first, and certainly don’t message BigDong87 and tell him that he’ll be playing against RUG Delver next round.

Given the environment that the games are being played in, there will be no time limit for the match when it is being played. You are, however, still expected to play at a reasonable pace. If someone is abusing this leniency, report them to me and provide proof, and I’ll work on it from there.

It’s accepted that people have work, school, kids, ladies, and lives that otherwise take place outside of Magic: The Gathering, and that you can’t just pop on whenever you feel like it to take care of this tournament. However, there must be a reasonable point when the round must end in order for the tournament to continue. So, rounds will last four days. That's about half a week and should be enough time to allow everyone to fit in a match around their usual schedules. You you are required to complete your games within that timeframe and are expected to coordinate your own times to play.

There will be no lenience for those who are unable to complete their match in time. Being a Swiss event, one match lagging behind means everyone lags behind, and that is unacceptable. In general, if it becomes clear that a match will not be completed in time, the player who made the most earnest effort to get the match to happen will be granted the win while the player who came up short will be given a loss. In general, I ask that you be gentlemen about such situations. In the event that the players can't agree on a winner, I will be the final voice on the matter and may be forced to issue a draw.

Intentional draws or losses will not be allowed. Players determined to be exploiting the above note will be penalized or removed.

When your match is done, both players must post in this thread to confirm the results.

If you intend on dropping at any point during the tournament, please let me know. I am not a mind reader. Anyone who is not in communication for one full round will be dropped. Anyone who is unable to play for two rounds will be dropped.

Along with being responsible for managing their own scheduling issues, players are also responsible for managing their rules issues. Players can and should keep replays, logs, and screenshots of their matches saved in case of a dispute. If you have a rules question and don’t have cdr’s cellphone, Cockatrice has a link for quick judge answers. (http://chat.magicjudges.org/mtgrules/) If there is a dispute that can’t be solved so easily, as with before, I am the final word.

In the event of a client crash, take a screenshot of as much information as possible and check if the client saved a replay. If a replay is available, use an available and agreed upon member to view the replay and help reconstruct the game. If a replay was not saved, use the screenshots to recreate the game to the best of your ability, and call upon a member to insure that all hands are accurate. If the game cannot be recreated or agreed upon, the players must replay their match. If you suspect your opponent is abusing this policy, report them to me.

Event information is subject to change.

Just a note that you have up until you play your first games to finalize your deck. This was more or less true of the previous two, but I wanted to especially clarify considering that the tournament is set to start the same weekend a new set is released.

Fifteen people means four rounds of Legacy followed by a cut to top eight.

Got it 2-1 over Fry and his Imperial Taxes.

Game 1 he landed Magus that shut off shuffle effects for Sylvan Library and he just overloaded me with beats.

Game 2 he had all the hate in the world including a Surgical on Punishing Fire and he had an Umezawa's Jitte on the battlefield, but he couldn't stick a creature long enough to get a swing in.

Game 3 he had double Magus and cast a Leonin Relic Warder that ate Mox Diamond, but Dark Confidant and Tireless Tracker drew me into colored sources too quick for him to take advantage of the situation.

It was supposed to end today at midnight my time, but a number of people have expressed concern regarding their ability to complete their games in time. So, there will be a 24hr extension. However, after that point, if there are still outstanding games, I will need concessions so that the proverbial ball can keep rolling.

a painful truth indeed... ggs though

decklist revealed, that's unfortunate... I'm an easy pray this season, punts all over the place, interface hates me (and I hate it ;), criminal (in)decision making, well it's been 4 years since I owned this archetype... my friend is quite successful with the RG version, but since I'm an old school player I don't like his kamikaze comboplaystyle (hence the deckname), I had an opportunity and borrowed it for a 80ppl tournament, the deck felt awesome and I punted away the top 8 spot with a similar version...

Krasman is the Spice King.

Modified play/draw rule does apply. This means that whoever did better in the Swiss chooses whether they play or draw first.

If you haven't already turned in your decklist, do it now. Gotta turn it in and make it public before you play your first game.

If you know who you're playing next, feel free to make it happen

Both players need to report results either in this thread or via private message.

Ever the bridesmaid, never the bride - lost my match for prizes (as usual) to Fry after I misplayed turn two (two!) of the first game of the match. The second two games were TNN for me, and then Mirran Crusader for him to clinch it. I think it was secretly because he had four more moms in his deck than me on today of all days.

I got game 1 from him going first and turn two Pulsing my turn one Mom. SFM got in the beats from there with the opener Batterskull and ther tutored Jitte, then I got a latter SFM for the SoFI

Game 2 he's on the play and turn 2 TNN gets there

Game 3 I get Crusader turn 3

I didn't realize Speedbumb was located in New Zealand as he mentioned EST times. In that case we are indeed at opposite ends of the world. I confirm, he got the play due to the seeding, and won the first game before I got to do much of anything...

Game 2 was pretty crazy and I Flickerwisped his Dread of Night to swing for lethal with Magus of the Moon and SFM.

Game 3 was insane, I got mom turn 1, Jitte turn 2, equip turn 3 bash, turn four bash face for 5 with it and play Wisp on one of my lands... Mean while he's wrecked my hand with Therapies. I had him dead only if he didn't see the play with the bounding his free mana with Chain.

Also, a poster sent me a message last night offering something to each of the top 8. When I hear back from them and if their offer is still good, I'll let you guys know.

deeper and deeper...

waaay... waaaaaaay down...

In fairness though, I probably could have advertised a little better. I'm still ok with how it turned out, but I'll try to insert bumps in more mainstream areas next time as well if I can.

Either way, many thanks for organizing it, Jelly! I had an excellent time playing with Sourcers, and am excited for Round #4, which I intend to run with a deck that would make Muad'dib go, "damn!" :D

Congrats on winning it UseLess, and commiserations on second, Fry.

Cheers for running the tournament iamajellydonut, it's been fun as always!

RIP whoever has to post anything to me though.

EDIT: iamajellydonut, is your name a reference to "Ich bin ein Berliner"?

I'm going to hire a man to deliver it via canoe.

And it's totally the JFK speech. Alternatively I use religious extremists and sound effects as my screennames.

Must be dust colored then. I'm excited to see this here brew of which you speak. I'll be trying out something new too... One must look deeper, past the surface to peer into the depths below.

Seems like a reasonable thing to make as a username, especially as it's quite a funny gaffe. At least you didn't name yourself after something that gets run over.

For the next one, I'll be on something other than Fireblast combo. Will be bringing in all the spice.

Donation to the Top 8 incoming!
... and private messages.

As the finals were coming to a close, Plague Sliver (aka James Hsu author of Magic: The Addiction) messaged me and asked if I wouldn't mind him adding something to the pool. I've waited this long to announce it because I'm greedy and wanted to read it first, but now you can have my sloppy seconds. The book, as best I can describe, is the coming-of-age story of every competitive player that has walked this earth. Although it took me a while to get through since I had no opportunity to sit down and read it in one go, I did chew through it as fast as I could, and even anyone who's lurking could probably stand a good dose of it.

This is a link to the thread regarding the book. It even has some of the original posts if you care to scan through.

Tell me about it. I have dozens of messages saved to notepads on my computer at home. 100 is not enough.

@iamajellydonut -- thank you for the excellent, heartfelt review of "Magic: The Addiction." I KNEW I found the right guy to read it!

To the participants --

I felt really strongly that I wanted to contribute a little bit to the tournament. You guys are playing in this for the love of the game, and Legacy in particular, so I couldn't help but chip in.

This forum -- the Source -- has been such a huge part of my life over the past 5-10 years. I'm not super active in terms of posting, but all the guys that helped me with my Legacy decks over the years -- from Nitewolf to sdematt to Lemnear to Bryant Cook to countless others -- were Sourcers. I have both versions of the playmat. I have met great people like cdr at GPs and tournaments. People connected because we all love Legacy. That's what matters.

The book talks in some detail about the power of the online community, and The Source is specifically name-dropped with impunity.

Once you receive your copies, I would love to hear your thoughts on how you enjoyed the book. What worked, what didn't, etc.

Cheers
James aka Plague Sliver

Big thanks for organizing this! Wish RL wasn't in turmoil when I was trying to play it in, but I have a job now so hopefully this works out in case there's every another one! And congrats Useless!

I received my cards now as well. The alter is really funny, thanks a lot! Once I get some other alters from a commission I'll post it in the awesome altered art thread. Now go and host that 4th Tournament. I got a title to defend ;).
